by kevin diamond I was introduced to Fungi Girls at Cheer Up Charlies in Austin this past SXSW, but forgot to check out their recorded tunes right away. Well last night I stumbled upon their cassette Seafaring Pyramids , and I'm upset that I waited so long to listen. Artist: Fungi Girls [...]

These two new Fungi Girl tracks tumbled out of the blogs this week like kids uber-psyched school's almost out for the summer. Pre-mature wishes from the children of my similes, but these tracks hold that restrained potential energy of juniors in high school who know they still have one more year to slog through after their summer of adolescent fuggery during which they have time for nothing but getting blasted and writing new tunes that range the gamut from crunchy rock jams to more like ...

Two perfect summer jams were just sent over later last night from the righteous Fungi Girls . Yeah it's spring now, but both "Turquoise Hotel" and "Owsley Knows" are both a-sides for their Hozac and Group Tightener 73s which are set for a mid-Summer release date. Both of these tracks show some serious maturity in these dude's sound, but what's most impressive to me is the minimal approach they took in "Owsley Knows". Really love to see these guys (not girls) moving in such a positive direction. Fungi Girls - Turquoise [...]

Fungi Girls are three teenage dudes from Cleburne, Texas whose favorite subject in school is knowing how to rock. The band released their debut LP "Seafaring Pyramids" in the Fall of 2009 on Play Pinball! Records , which caught the ear (and affection) of folks like Impose Magazine , The Tripwire , We Shot Jr. , and Gorilla Vs. Bear . Their music is a smokey brand of garage rock mixed with shoegaze and surf, creating a sound well ahead of the curve of what you would expect from a group of 15-16 year olds. [...]
Fungi Girls - "Dystopic Vision" from the 2009 album Seafaring Pyramids on Play Pinball! Records.

Despite a name that suggests shapely mycologists, Fungi Girls are actually three dudes from Cleburne, Texas who make really art-damaged garage rock [Editor's Note: Fungi Girls are not to be confused with Shop Assistants altar girls Vivian Girls, Siltbreeze moneymakers U.S. Girls, the '60s era pop collective The Girls, or Pitchfork's current boner-inducing just-plain Girls... dumbass] . Their stuff sounds like what you might imagine the Jesus & Mary Chains' offspring to be working on if they formed a band, with the usual synthesis of 'noise'+'not noise at all' ingredients. Oh yeah, did we mention that only [...]

here's a saturday medley of tunes, starting with 'pa pa power' by dead man's bones , which is one of the coolest things i've heard in awhile. something about the playful, jangly keyboard lines atop the creepy children's choir shouting about just works incredibly well. check out the full album here . 'crystal roads' is a wavy, poppy rocker, swinging party (a replacements cover song, btw) is a transporting, dreamy piece of dancefloor genius (watch the video here , it really adds to the song), and 'bicycle' is a great balance of placidity and danciness in one [...]

Just a reminder that everyone's favorite Cleburne High Schoolers' LP will soon hit the shelves. Fungi Girls debut LP, Seafaring Pyramids , is the same slice of carefree garage pop that we all have grown to love. Actually, the dudes have just put up the entire album for freeload . But that shit is just for yr ipod. How about checking out Play Pinball! Records where you can purchase a tangible music relic and get a rad T along the way. Fungi Girls - Dystopic Vision
The missing resin caper has been solved and Reading Rainbow 's LP was finally pressed onto vinyl about a month later than intended. Upon arrival, Mystical Participation will spend more than it's fair share of time with my phono. Also note that their record release party will be a thousand miles away from me in their hometown, Philly, at Kung Fu Necktie on the 21st. I actually saw RR last July at a house show in Denton with Teenage Cool Kids and Fungi Girls (who's debut LP is available for pre-order [...]
The Fungi Girls are no joke. While it's easy to get caught up in the hype and praise and write them off as some sort of gimmick due to their young age (all 3 members are in their mid teens), this is a group with tons of talent and motivation. Here's our interview with these [...]

Just last week I was in attendance for the Teenage Cool Kids record release show for their latest lp, Foreign Lands , at Rubber Gloves in Denton (actually the real album cover is much cooler, I just couldn't find one that was big enough). Released by Protagonist Music on super sturdy 180 gram vinyl, TCK are about to take over the world on a rediculous 3 month tour. First, romping through the upper 48 before they head over seas (apparantly these guys are huge in the UK). While in the states, Andrew Savage [...]

Living in Dallas is like living on the surface of the sun. This place is not fit for human habitation. Especially if you're blue-eyed and pasty-skinned like me. I've always found the Fourth of July to be an overrated holiday. There's a built-in obligation to be outside. I love my country and all, but I want no part of the heat. Even after the sun goes down, beers get warm too fast to provide any relief. Fireworks are exciting, sure. Up north. Here, they're best viewed on a wall-mounted Samsung while basking in glorious central a/c. I say fuck the [...]

Fungi Girls - 15 years old and awesome. Download Pacifica Nostalgia Props to Transparent

If they didn't have a great name and great songs, we would be pretty jealous of all the hugs and high fives Fungi Girls have been receiving over the last few months. At the ripe old age of 15, the trio hustle through the fleeting sloppy pop of pubescence like they've got a block party and some underage drinking to attend to. Keep an eye on their releases page to find out when the physical form of that fuzzy guitar burn finally lands. Fungi Girls - Pacifica Nostalgia [...]

Half way into the year and we've already amassed an incredible itunes library for 2009 alone. While creating a list of "top songs" is never easy (someone is always the fat kid on the playground basketball court), there was actually a method to the madness in this list. Whether it was looking at play counts or songs that I know I've listened to at least 100+ times in my car, the rankings in this list are "accurate". Things did get a bit hairy in the top 10, but they're all favorites really. Don't forget to send in your top tunes [...]
