We started tonight's show with recognition of MIKEY WELSH, former Weezer bassist and longtime Boston rock and art scene veteran who died unexpectedly this weekend in Chicago. He was 40 years old.... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .

Labor Day weekend, folks. Party it up, you've earned it. Here in New York, we've recently weathered earthquakes and minor hurricanes and other inconveniences. So fire up the grill, put a cold beverage in your hand and turn up the mildly twee indie pop jams on this week's mix. Cover art photo was taken by Kate Bryant at the Friends With You inflatable sculpture park which is at the upper end of the Highline park. While Labor Day is seen as the end of summer, Summer Fridays mixes will continue to the Autumn Equinox... so you get two [...]

Wikipedia It's no error that the just-released Obscurities collection of rarities and ephemera came out credited to Stephin Merritt , considering that it drew material from all of many projects such as The Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes, Gothic Archies or The 6ths in addition to works released under his own name. And considering how prolific Merritt is, it's also no surprise that a lot of material that would have qualified for inclusion got left out - gotta keep something in reserve for the multi-volume box set, after all. When you start a business, certain things which stamp you with the mark of legitimacy are basically just a nuisance. Completing your accounts for the year is very much one of these: an awful chore, which never at any point makes you feel like your are a proper business-owning muthafucka and don't you forget it, more like a twelve-year-old staring resentfully at their homework. Being a blogger doesn't help. If I called myself a writer or the owner of one of the UK's most upwardly mobile record labels then I would feel like... I dunno, like I wasn't [...]

I really should have mentioned this before, but if there are any bands out there who want to play Glastonbury, they have until the 5pm on Monday 17th to apply through the Emerging Talent Competition, which can be entered here . I've had a lot of emails this week since my name went on that list. They've all been really nice emails, not an arse amongst them, but the music has been a very long way indeed from the kind of stuff I listen to, so I do find myself wondering a little at my suitability for [...]

The Stallcast you ask? Yes indeed the Stallcast, because my brain is still stuck in neutral after the Christmas break and seems annoyingly resistant to being asked to function properly at the moment. I've had half a week back 'at work', if I can really call it that, and I still feel like the the old grey custard is still spluttering a bit, rather than firing on all cylinders. The playlist reflects this in many way too, because it's a bit all over the place. Good tunes though, although I suspect those amongst you with Haircuts might not [...]

Future Bible Heroes - Lonely Days (Charnock Richard Mix)

My Favorite - 17 Berlin [box] [...]

Miss Black glides down the street to an internal Hammer Horror soundtrack , she stops to check her hair and make-up in the vast windows of Top Shop – a blood-curdling scream… there is no reflection… just a vacant day-glo mannequin gazing back… the Hammer Horror organ music spills out into the high street, and Miss Black takes flight… [...]

I wake up in a start on the floor of a rented apartment in West Berlin, a song audible from the next door apartment. I had a dream in which I was thirsty. I went to the fridge, only to find it completely full of expired milk, litres and litres of it... I came here 8 and a half months ago looking for Bohemia or adventure or whatever, but found mostly punks and dog shit. It's 7:02 and my room-mate had another one of his Greenpeace chicks over last night (paper thin walls don't hold warmth or [...]

Michael Knight Genre: Alternative / Indie / Pop From: Berlin/Dublin Michael Knight is the alter ego of Irish moody pop maestro and all round musical quilt Richie Murphy. His second album, with a title that I'll definitely steal if I ever get around to writing my autobiography, 'I'm Not Entirely [...]
MP3: The Magnetic Fields - I Wish I Had an Evil Twin Good news for Magnetic Fields fans. Those faithful can expect a few new things from Merrit as solo, side and main projects. After keeping as busy as he could, Stephin Merrit and crew are back in the studio. From ...

Another week, and I'm feeling theme-ish. So four songs about vampires: go! --- I've posted Ash before, but I thought I posted more Ash. Apparently not, and never in English. So here's a song from their most recent album, the vampy sex-tacular " Vampire Love ." --- The Future Bible Heroes is Stephin Merritt's Pet Shop Boy side project. It's techno-tastic, and this song is no different - [...]
