All weeklong Everybody Taste will be reflecting and ruminating on 2011 with a serious of posts and lists dedicated to celebrating the best (read: our favorite) music of the year. When you think of the particularly prolific artists of 2011, Cass McCombs and Thee Oh Sees—both of whom somehow released two stunning and critically-lauded full-lengths this year—might come to mind. Or maybe it's Taylor Goldsmith, the star of the Middle Brother supergroup's debut LP and whose own Dawes released their boldest record to date. Or the Orrall brothers, Jake and Jamin. Sure, they [...]

Swansea Recreation Centre is a band scattered around East London. Apparently none of them have been to Wales or have any idea what the recreation centre in Swansea might look like, but they have notion that this may or may not be what it sounds like. "First Time European" [...]

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2nd It's not easy to discern one synth-pop act from another, especially after years and years of hearing just about everything a synthesizer has to offer in pop music. Baltimore-based trio Future Islands , however, strays from the genre's typical formula by offering a diverse range of lyrical emotion in juxtaposition with the cold sameness that's difficult to avoid with synth noise. Tracks such as "In The Fall" (off the band's 2010 EP of the same title) find front man Samuel T. Herring embarking on winding, four-minute poetic narratives before finally retiring to repeated [...]

Sunday, November 27 Lonnie Walker , Ed Scrader's Music Beat and Future Islands took the stage at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. According to Sam Herring, it was the best-selling show yet of their US tour - and it was date #30. Local band Lonnie Walker opened. The set started a little early and was shorter than the fans wanted. What can we say - we love Lonnie. After closing out with their most popular songs, Ed Scharder's Music Beat took the stage. The two-piece is from Baltimore, where Future Islands now [...]

Friends Records - Friends Records 2011 In a culture of internet which has seen localised popularity completely derailed, Friends Records has done a great thing in rounding up all the local talent it can find, and hurling it out there on to the web in the form of a 30-track Friends Records sampler . In a free digital and premium limited edition double cassette release which dropped last Friday, you'll find familiar names Co La, Weekends and Future Islands alongside some heavily compressed instrumentals, covers and sessions all performed by Baltimore, Maryland's finest underground [...]

The great Friends Records out of Baltimore released its second annual compilation of music from some of the area's best talents on Thanksgiving. The compilation—available now as a free digital download and as a limited edition cassette —features tracks from a host of ET favorites including Future Islands, Lonnie Walker, Moss of Aura, Celebration, and Lands & Peoples. But even more exciting is the potential for discovering new favorites, and for me, that's been the smokey jangle and strut of "Weepy Little Fingers" by Secret Mountains . Download the Friends [...]

Stumbled onto Future Islands in 2010 and thought their music needed a little bit of polishing and they apparently read my mind. The same electro-punk beats with ripe bass, 802s keyboards and new-ro vocals but cleaned up and ready to go out on the town. Past midnight, I might add. This whole album is undeniably well put together and if you like this track, you will be enchanted by the rest of it. Artist Feature: Gotye Australian artist, Gotye (aka Wally De Backer), appeared on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic this week. It's a set well worth watching if you have a time. By Ace Ubas Thursday night at the Echoplex marked the third time Baltimore-based trio Future Islands played to a frenetic Los Angeles crowd in just two months. They simply haven't had enough of the City of Angels and apparently, the sold-out LA crowd hasn't had enough of them either – and with good reason. And they've come a long way since last year where they played in front of less than a hundred people at the Smell. On this third...
