While other acts demonstrate the carefree and/or indulgent sides of life on the road, Future Islands offer up a more monotonous sneak peak in the music video for "Grease". The black and white video shifts from frame to frame, recreating the circular feeling associated with touring, and documents the band's typical day: traveling, hanging out in hotel rooms (while wearing sweet robes), unloading the gear, setting up the merch table, and waiting impatiently to rock out. Once the band hits the stage, the tedious activities are swept away by an avalanche of synth-pop fury. Follow [...]
Even on their singles, Future Islands don ’t stray far from the no-holds-barred romanticism that defines their full-length. “Tomorrow," part of the Less Artists More Condos series, is a familial gospel tune floating around in the chasm of outer space, splaying out in all four dimensions. You can hear everything from Brian Eno to The Jordanaires in here, but remove the ebullient vocal furnishings and you’re left with stock-and-trade synth-pop. Planes of sound softly heave up and down like a lifeboat on an ocean. It’s pretty and tranquil, with customary grassroots charm (“What’s a man to do when a man can’t be true?”). The [...]

Future Islands at FYF Fest 2012 ( more by Debi Del Grande ) As mentioned , Future Islands are playing a few of the Thrill Jockey 20th anniversary shows this year, including the one at Webster Hall on September 15 with Tortoise, Matmos, Liturgy, and D. Charles Speer. Tickets for that show are still available. After that tour, the band will head out on a tour with Brooklyn no [...]
Ever since I was old enough to complain, my dad took great pleasure in the act of dragging my always-resistant ass to music festivals. A summer full of glorious music for him meant a summer full of unstifled groans from me. His taste in music back then - folk, folk, and nothing but folk - meant we hit folk festivals exclusively, and he wasn't shy about tackling the big, multi-day camp-out fests that separate the men from the meek. I have fond, fuzzy memories of trying to enjoy the Philadelphia Folk Festival and basically roasting alive under an angry sun [...]
By Malvina Rincón FYF Fest took place over Labor Day weekend in Los Angeles. It was two days of eclectic music in the sun in one of the most musically gifted cities in the country. Despite ironic clothing choices (i.e. Hawaiian shirts) paired with equally ironic dance moves (i.e. The Running Man) from some hipsters, the audience was diverse and as warm as the weather. The DYI spirit of the festival, which has been running since 2004, did not go ...

Labor Day weekend FYF Fest will convert downtown LA into a haven for all music types alike. The young festival manages to coordinate one of the better festival lineups of the year. 2012 ubiquitous headliners M83, Refused, and Beirut are joined by the long silent The Faint and nearly a hundred other musical acts and [...]
Derrière ce pseudonyme filmographique se cache le songwriter néo-zélandais James Milne . With two albums and a newly released EP under his belt, it’s no secret that 19-year-old Gabe Goodman has already set down the pavement to his road of success and is traveling down it with lightening speed. With music lining his blood from a tender age, to the blood, sweat, and tears he poured into songwriting and recording sessions throughout high school, Gabe is no man-made artist. He’s the real deal. And VS was fortunate enough to get some insight from the talent himself about his inspirations, where he’s headed and more... [...]

"What's a man to do/If a man can't be true?" Samuel T. Herring croons on the new Future Islands single. Always theatrical but never cliché, the Baltimore post-punk dance trio teases us with the soulful "Tomorrow." Although there is no word on a full-length follow-up to their highly regarded album , "On the Water," the dichotomy of Herring's Otis Redding (by-way-of-Meatloaf)-like vocals and high-decibel snarls provide more than enough grit on this new synth-pop ballad. Doo-wop harmonies provided by Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak) and Lexie Mountain also offer a new lush backdrop. It's a toned-down Future Islands, [...]

Jenn Wasner has been keeping seriously busy of late touring with Wye Oak, singing in the Dirty Projectors' band, and releasing a killer 7" from her solo side-project, Flock of Dimes. The single, released earlier this year on Baltimore's Friends Records , features the choppy future-pop original "Prison Bride" and a brilliant cover of the Eagles " I Can't Tell You Why," where Wasner's vocals are slowed down into a deep soulful man croon. Flock of Dimes has now jumped onto indie giant Merge Records for the project's second 7", "Curtain" by way of "Apparition," the A-side of which [...]

On September 3rd, Future Islands will be releasing a new single, “Tomorrow”, (b/w “Fountain”) via Upset the Rhythm. It really is such a mind blowing experience every time Sam herring opens up his vocal chords. Even if the lyrics are sometimes undistinguishable, we always know how much expansive beauty is being put forth. One of the finest tracks to date frorm the Baltimore gravely synth-rockers.
Following last year's On the Water LP, Baltimore synth pop band Future Islands has a new single on the way. "Tomorrow," the A-side from the single, is available to stream via the SoundCloud widget above. In a way, Future Islands is the antithesis to their contemporaries; with the indiesphere currently so heavily saturated in detached, understated synth pop, the group's dramatic take on the genre feels like a breath of fresh air. With its appropriately large reverb, pulsating rhythms, female background vocals, and singer Sam Herring's uniquely soulful delivery, "Tomorrow" [...]
