Who : Frightened Rabbit vs. Future of the Left Times : 4:00pm vs. 4:30pm Hometown : Selkirk, Scotland vs. Cardiff, Wales Thoughts : Two products of the United Kingdom, one from Scotland and one from Wales, will be rocking the stages in Coney Island this weekend and both have very different but noisy takes on rock music. Frightened Rabbit hailing from the land of Belle & Sebasitan take a bit of a mopey approach, their music can be dark and very [...]

Who knew I had so many records in the virtual review stack. And who knew I had so many words in me. I think we can finally call an end to my recession induced writer's block. Oneida Rated O Brah/Jagjaguwar Any triple album, like Oneida's Rated O, contains a certain amount of selfishness on the band's part. When Oneida's Kid Millions discussed the album with Dusted Magazine , he made it fairly clear that [...]

The Future of the Left is here with a new album, Travels With Myself and Another , which on its face is a little disappointing because the ex-Mclusky band members are usually so brilliant in naming things (See: The Only Difference Between Me and You is that You're not on Fire , My Pain and Sadness is More Painful and Sad than Yours ). Outside of the name thing, I'm very pleased with the album. The second song off the album is a great straight up rock track, which starts with one of my favorite lines of [...]

Monday: Future of the Left @ Maxwell's 9pm $12 If you weren't hip to it Future of the Left played a surprise/secret gig last night in Brooklyn following the first Pool Party of the year. Lucky for you they are also playing Siren Festival on Saturday. In case you hate the huge crowds and still wanted to see them in a smaller venue you can probably still sell your soul to get a ticket to see them in Hoboken at Maxwell's. Good luck! Future of the Left - "Lapsed Catholics" [...]

Continuing the shameless lauding of this area's free summer shows, the next big, nay elephantine, event is the Siren Music Festival . This goes down in Coney Island on Sat July 18th and features what for some - myself included - looks to be a who's who of currently hot indie-rock acts. Of course this is always subject to the cynicism and subjectivity that's particularly rife in this region of the musical map, but at the end of the day it's free and there will be something for almost any fan [...]

Brooklyn Vegan is reporting about a secret show by Future of the Left this Sunday night at Spike Hill (at 8pm, after the JellyNYC Pool Party with Mission of Burma, Fucked Up, Ponytail, and Jemina Pearl). I find it hard to believe that anything that posted on Brooklyn Vegan can still be called "secret." All Future of the Left tour dates (including their appearance at Siren Fest on July 18) are after the jump. Future of the Left tour dates: July 13 - Maxwell's - Hoboken, NJ July 14 - Johnny [...]

Let's continue our look back on this year and it's awesomeness (musically anyway). This time I went through the trouble of adding "buy" links, so if you find yourself listening to something on this list over and over fork some of your hard earned cashmoney, ok? And now the 2nd installment of the Best Downloadables Of 2009 ... Buried In The Nude (mp3) by Screaming Females ( buy cd or vinyl // buy mp3 ) Arming Eritrea (mp3) by Future [...]

Playing catch up again with Drake , here's the first of an Independence Day Weekend double shot. -ed Drake's Take: New Releases 06.23.09 This week perfectly illustrates what makes this such a great year for music. Looking at it on the calendar some time ago, there was some excitement, but who knew there'd be so many year-end list candidates from this crop. The latest from The Future of the Left , Sunset Rubdown , Dinosaur Jr. , Foreign Born and Regina Spektor [...]

Hmm, so what we have here is what I'd like to imagine the non-existent third McLusky album would probably have sounded like. Whereas songs that didn't blister straight through for 3 minutes on The Difference Between Me and You Is That I'm Not on Fire and even Curses! seemed like novelties (gimmick isn't the right word…that would imply that they weren't rad), Future of the Left fucking nailed it on Travels With Myself and Another [...]

Looking at it on the calendar some time ago, there was some excitement, but who knew there'd be so many year-end list candidates from this crop. The latest from The Future of the Left , Sunset Rubdown, Dinosaur Jr., Foreign Born and Regina Spektor will undoubtably make a few lists, and there's also great new releases from Patterson Hood, The Gossip, Tortoise and God Help the Girl. Let's not get hung up on what once was here. We all know the storied history of McLusky and we all miss the band that once was, but after hearing the debut from Future of the Left (2007's Curses ) it's time to embrace what we have now and realize that it may even be better then what once was. On their sophomore record, Travels With Myself And Another , Future of the Left go ahead and top everything they did on their debut. They are louder, angrier, and more defined then they were just two years ago, [...]

I am out on the road this week with the Mount Righteous folks touring through the midwest, so I decided to write a bunch of these short "MP3 of the Day" posts so you guys wouldn't be left completely SubEx-less for the next week. Today I am in WICHITA, KS and today's MP3 is by Future of the Left. The second album by the UK rockers, Travels With Myself And Another, is as raw sounding as ever. Think of them as a less pretentious Louis XIV, due largely to the fact that their accents are real. [...]
