Oakland trio Voyaj got their start in 2003 when David Krah and Stephen O'Connell collaborated for the score of a short film. They released a few albums and played a few shows as The Sunward Spike before adding Sean Hagen four years ago. Earlier this year, they renamed themselves and released their self-titled LP as Voyaj. All three members collaborate and play some combination of drums, keys, bass, and guitar at varying points throughout the album, which I would describe as "weird pop" that takes you in several different directions during its nine songs. Poster Design: Philip Pascuzzo The Roxie Theater , the Mission's last remaining independent movie theater, is putting on a benefit concert at Verdi Club tonight, with all proceeds going to support the theater's campaign to renovate and upgrade their smaller sister theater, the Little Roxie . The neighborhood cinematic institution recruited "four of San Francisco’s finest lo-fi/garage bands" for the event: headlining are the seemingly ubiquitous Thee Oh Sees , with fellow locals Sonny [...]
Go to shows! Everybody go to shows! Thursday, April 4th San Cisco, Chaos Chaos at Rickshaw Stop Ever hear those amazing stories about seeing Pulp play their first American shows at an instore? Or seeing The Killers at Popscene? Well, this is Australia's San Cisco's big moment. It's been a busy month between lots of shows and a trip to the Pacific Northwest , but even with all that has been going on, I've kept up with listening to new bands everyday. Here's what I listened to during the month of March! March 1 - Reviving Cecilia - I probably should have known about this band since they were covered on The Ruckus before , but there is so much out there, it's hard to keep track! I'm glad I found them myself during this project since [...]

Two Gallants returned to The Fillmore last Saturday night for the first time since December 2008, marking a beautiful and emotional triumph following the band's slow ascent out of the ashes left by their first six years, three studio records, and early nonstop touring. Playing for nearly two hours before a sold-out hometown crowd at the legendary San Francisco auditorium, band members Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel appeared completely in sync and at ease, filling the room with their raucous brand of folk rock, thanking their families, friends, and fans for their continued support, and even [...]
The formula of reverb-drenched-rock, guitar-drum-vocal, two-man band has proven itself, time and again, to be a successful combination. Acts like the Black Keys and the White Stripes proved that it could be done, and tore their way up the charts while they did so. It is, nevertheless, challenging, blending a careful balance of lo-fi and [...] The post Show Review: Two Gallants with Akron/Family and Future Twin at The Fillmore, 2/2/2013 appeared first on Spinning Platters .
It was a special hometown/going away party for SF favorites, Two Gallants.
We're smack dab in the middle of SF Sketchfest, which we're happy to call the Greatest Comedy Festival in America, and Dakin's running around laughing himself silly, so I'm taking over the task of recommending shows for those of you who love music but hate laughing. That can only mean one thing, though ... [...] The post Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 1/31/13-2/6/13 appeared first on Spinning Platters .

After touring Europe and playing a few East Coast gigs at the end of 2012, San Francisco folk-rock duo Two Gallants will soon head out on a West Coast tour that caps off with a hometown gig at the Fillmore on February 2nd with Akron/Family and Future Twin supporting. Oh yeah, and the fine folks at the historic venue were nice enough to give us a pair of tickets as a prize for one lucky fan who will attend the band's first [...]

All this rain getting you down? Well you're in luck, because Future Twin has one last little piece of summer to share with you. The Bay Bridged is pleased to offer up the world premiere of the final song in Future Twin's Summer Singles Series, "Getting Theoretical": The song starts introspective and brooding, but then just explodes. It's by far the heaviest track of the series, in terms of both overall atmosphere and how much it flat out rocks. The previous two installments, “Summer Song” and "Sara", premiered [...]

While the Bay Area shifts between indian summer and the threat of autumn rains; Future Twin is keeping the sunny season here with the premiere of "Sara" as part of the San Francisco band's Summer Single Series. Not your father or mother's "Hey Joe"; Jean Jeanie, Antonio Roman-Alcalá, DK and William Cotton follow up the self-described 'moongayze' of "Summer Song" with empowering boulder crusher "Sara" that Jeanie attributes as a testa...

The fiery San Francisco-based Future Twin sees the release of two new releases - the brand new Resist 73 as well as Future Twin Deluxe Edition, a limited edition cd release combining the new 73 along with the 5-song EP/cassette Situation (which represents the first wide release for these songs, respectively). Future Twin was originally [...]

'Lockits' is taken from a recent 7" single by all-girl moped gang Future Twin who tear up the tarmac of San Francisco wit their beastly machines.

Future Twin Deluxe Edition combines a stellar 7" with a fantastic EP for a worthy compilation. Future Twin is a San Francisco band who are pulling from all of the right influences to create something that feels familiar yet unique enough to be compelling. There's hints of 50's and 60's girl-group doo-wop and surf laced through these seven tracks. However, there's also an unshakable punk aesthetic (which should be expected from anyone who lists Hickey as an influence). These songs are unabashedly bright and incredibly charming but sometimes they come off...
San Francisco’s Future Twin have started a new Summer Single Series, in which they’ll introduce a new single per month, beginning in August and ending in October. Future Twin's Jean Jeanie says, "We hope this music provides a back drop for the kids that decided to stay and revel in the California sublime [...]
Take a glimpse of a photo of five-piece, San-Fran-based Future Twin and listen to the surf-inspired chords of the first song on their latest EP, and you'll know this band is from California. Promo photos of the group look straight out of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air , as they perch on mopeds (appropriate: this gang met through a couple of different moped gangs) in a sunny, graffiti-clad Bay Area alley. With bands such as Best Coast, Wavves, and Real Estate currently sun-staining the indie map, this group, who describes its music as “psychedelic grandma rock”, has [...]
It's a relatively quiet week for new releases, but there are two albums with KEXP ties that are making splashes this week. The first of these two is O' Be Joyful , the second album from Charleston, SC, duo Shovels and Rope . First collaborating in 2010 on the murder ballad album Shovels and Rope , the album's name soon took on a second life as the moniker for the duo of Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent. Like its predecessor, O' Be Joyful features Trent and Hearst's whiskey-soaked harmonies laid over classic country instrumentation. [...]
