Apparently we're doing back to back Flashbacks. Though yesterday's somewhat tragic post was a bit unplanned, today's proper Flashback Friday revisting of The Love Cats by The Cure was inspired by a recent jazzy electronic soul version by Kinny . Kinny shares space with the likes of Alice Russell, Belleruche, Nostalgia 77 and more on the utterly excellent Tru Thoughts label, which has gotten into the awesome habit of breaking new artists via some uncommon sounding downtempo covers. So even though we featured a [...]
Music is so deeply hewn in to the tapestry of Camden's past that even if a rogue bulldozer were to somehow escape the Olympic park and flatten the lot, the Camden faithful would still gather on the detritus (like Kevin Costner in the film Field of Dreams) to watch the ghostly echo of gigs passed. Camden Crawl has managed to do away with wrestling the country/city festival debate that plagues the likes of Hard Rock Calling and SW4 – those who assume the hardware set up should remain universal – by setting up in the across the attics, backrooms [...]
The band have been confirmed for the Manchester event next month....

Camden Crawl (London, 4-6 May '12) // Words: Saam Das The 2012 Camden Crawl draws ever closer, kicking off this Friday with a party at Koko, headlined by Death In Vegas but also featuring the likes of Funeral Suits . The real party begins on Saturday however, as a mass of bands play across dozens of venues in the NW1 area, along with other events such as comedy and spoken word. We've compiled ten of our suggested highlights of the [...]
The Futureheads release an entire album of original songs and cover songs re-worked as a cappella arrangements... and it works. Rant is easily the most difficult record in the Futureheads' already impressive discography. They've been one of a few revival-style bands to emerge from the past decade relatively unscathed due to consistent quality. They never really completely re-invented themselves, though, which is an easy trap to fall into while staying in a genre that limited. Everything about that changes on Rant, which may be the boldest record to come out of 2012. It's an audacious,...

Additions have been announced today for the line up to Herorfordshire based festival Nozstock , with The Furtureheads set to headline the July weekender. Other acts named include Zinc, Imperial Leisure and Kal Lavelle. The festival is held in Bromyard over the 27th-29th July inclusive with tickets priced just £80. As well as music the festival will also have a whole host of other activities going on including an interactive theatre tent named 'Bantam of the Opera' where you can join in with circus tricks, belly dancing and puppet shows. Also on [...]

By Nick Levine ( @nicklevine ) The Camden Crawl this year returns to North London bigger and better than ever. Taking place on the May Day Bank Holiday weekend (4-6 May), with over 300 acts across the spectrum of music, comedy and performance set to perform. The festival takes place across a plethora of different venues, with just one ticket allowing access to all. It's a great way of sampling some hotly tipped bands and comedians without breaking the bank. Originally a staple event in the Britpop [...]

The Futureheads are in Gateshead to perform their latest superb opus, 'Rant'. [Read Martin's review of 'Rant' here. ] It's worth repeating, this is pretty much an entirely vocal album which spans performances of Futureheads songs rearranged for voices only, some unlikely covers, and a handful of traditional folk songs. This is the closest thing to a home performance of the freshly-minted album so far, although they will return to their actual hometown of Sunderland in a month or two for a couple of gigs. Nothing special, just one in Sunderland Minster ("a [...]

The Futureheads By Rosie Duffield April 12, 2012 The Andrew Sisters, The Beach Boys, The Mamas and Papas; vocal harmonies done well have always been impressive. Doing them well a cappella is even tougher, but The Futureheads don't seem to be worried about that. Their latest album Rant sees the band do just that – rearranging their older songs, putting their own stamp on some interesting covers and showcasing traditional folk songs and sea shanties – and all of them unaccompanied. [...]
We're taking over Koko for a weekend of great live music…

The Futureheads - Meet Me Halfway [The Black Eyed Peas] watch the original

Photos by Veronika Moore Today marks the release of The Futureheads fifth studio album Rant , which sees the band take a slight change of direction as they take on the a cappella genre. Today also brings the opening night of the tour and it's going to be a new experience for their strong fan base, I'm sure many wondering how they're going to pull this off - especially when the band are known for their lively sets filled with jostling kids bouncing off each other. [...]
If there was any doubt in your mind how talented Sunderland's most famous sons the Futureheads were, wipe that all out now. Fellow Mackems Frankie and the Heartstrings alerted us to this video from the Futureheads' gig last week at London Union Chapel, an amazingly brilliant performance of Sparks 'The No. 1 Song in Heaven', entirely a capella in the style of their latest album, 'Rant', along with the Cornshed Sisters and choir. (Read Martin's review of the LP here. ) Further, Frankie and co. warn that tickets [...]
Gospel undercoated, ambient backing is all that accompanies the longing, echoing and slower than normal cry of Barry Hyde to introduce the adventurous a cappella cover of The Sparks', 'The No.1 Song in Heaven'. There is a blasé tongue in cheek element that filters into the lofty vocal approach and playful "de dee didlleeee" backing. Whether it is mockery of Sunday morning praising or they are just giving way to their playful side? Whatever it is, it still leaves you questioning the merits in abandoning their signature guitar hook laden approach. The a cappella [...]

In the hands of another band, the prospect of a completely a capella album would understandably strike fear into any discerning music consumer. But with The Futureheads , there seems something oddly fitting and natural about this progression, and the release of Rant. The tracklisting does somewhat exacerbate the album's "gimmick" angle , made up of four parts re-worked album tracks , two parts cheesy covers, a few parts classic folk, and one part leftfield cover. In summary, no original tracks, and nothing that becomes ground-breaking after the a capella treatment. Praise [...]
The Futureheads released their latest album, an all a capella affair called 'Rant', this past Monday. Read Martin's review of it here. Below is a live performance by the Sunderland band of the album track 'Hanging Johnny', filmed in black and white and while the band's just hanging about by the seaside. Man, those guys are talented. Enjoy. Click here to view the embedded video.

Frank Yang Somewhere over the last few weeks Sunday night's Wedding Present show at The Horseshoe got co-opted as the "closing party" for Canadian Musicfest , an appellation I personally refused to acknowledge. The 21st anniversary show for Seamonsters ? Absolutely. The tour in support of their just-released new record Valentina ? Certainly. Closing party for a festival that at no point acknowledged the band as part of their programme or acknowledged they were exponentially greater than most everyone else who played? [...]

Sometimes the unlikeliest things happen. A black and white silent film has won the best picture Oscar. Newcastle are level on points with Chelsea late in the season. A sumptuous a capella album has been recorded by a bunch of Wearside lads better known for their jagged guitar-led post-punk. We are being excessively taxed on behalf of natural variations in the Earth's climate. These are strange times. To the topic at hand: most groups follow a conventional career trajectory of releasing increasingly directional material of their own invention. But what if a [...]
Sunderland's The Futureheads have been utilising four part harmonies since their inception, but the 2nd of April, 2012 sees the release of Rant , their first wholly a cappella full length. While the album is officially released on the band's own Nul Records on the 2nd, it's available as a digital download from their website now. Alternatively, LP pre-orders come with an instant digital download.
The Futureheads are getting to release an a cappella album, 'Rant', next week (the 2nd of April on their own label, Nul). To prepare you for the spectacle, the band have released this video of them performing - with pint glasses and slapping of a pub table - of 'The Old Dun Cow'. "MAC-EN-TYRE!" In other Futureheads news, the band will appear at Camden Crawl , they've released a single cover of Black Eyed Peas' 'Meet Me Halfway' that Martin waxed poetically about here and they've got a tour starting up [...]
