Hypnotic and forceful 1967 two-fer from legendary jazz guitarist After emigrating from Budapest in the mid-50s, Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo found his way into the U.S. jazz scene, first with Chico Hamilton, and starting in 1966 as a group leader. These two 1967 live albums come from the middle of a productive two-year stay on Impulse!, and collect performances from an April run at Boston's Jazz Workshop and a September date at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Szabo plays in a quintet of guitar, bass, drums and percussion. The song list mixes originals from Szabo [...]
In 1967, Vicky Leandros hit #4 at the Eurovision Song Contest with the bittersweet kitsch ballad L'amour est bleu, written by space age pop pioneer André Popp . While Vicky scored a modest hit, as well as Claudine Longet a few months later, it was French orchestra leader Paul Mauriat – kind of the Gallic pendant to American muzak lightster Ray Conniff – who made ten tons of bucks with the song, topping the US charts with his key party warm-up version for five consecutive weeks in spring 1968. The same year, covers [...]
Props to Dollop who, after failing to find what they wanted from a mid-week night out, decided to start their own! Kicking off this Wednesday 27th October, the night features live sets from The Invisible and Walls (a combination of Allez Allez and Banjo or Freakout) as well as dj sets from Untold, Falty DL, Work It, Lucky PDF and dollop themselves. Full info can be found here. Good luck to 'em. In preparation they've been banding around this lovely mix by Walls , recorded for the Self Titled [...]
As strange as it might sound, I apparently have something in common with a celebrated Hungarian guitarist who died almost 30 years ago. Gabor Szabo, who made a pretty big splash for a couple of decades starting in the Sixties, was inspired as a child by watching American cowboy movies starring Roy Rogers - who was also my childhood hero. Of course, our inspirations took different paths. I was determined to become a rootin', tootin' cowboy and failed (although I do often toot) but Szabo picked up a guitar and taught himself to play, eventually becoming a musical [...]
Well, it's September and summer is about to end. Personally, I think it used to take twice as more to end yet every year it seems to speed up more and more. Anyways at least it's still sunny for the time being. Here's a 4 song selection suitable for sunny summer/early autumn days. Starts off with one of the alltime best soul pieces; Gil Scott-Heron 's timeless Lady Day & John Coltrane from his 1971 Pieces of a Man album. The second piece is a latin piano piece by Cal Tjader [...]
Gabor Szabo - Gypsy Queen (Impulse! 1966) Gabor Szabo – Spellbinder / Impulse! Gabor Szabo resides in an odd niche of jazz musicians. The innovative Hungarian guitarist came to prominence in the 60s with his truly idiosyncratic style incorporating jazz, pop, rock and classical with Latin, Gypsy, Indian and Asian influences, but while most of his contemporary jazz musicians were heading towards the spiritual, energetic and earthy side of the genre closely following the masterful teachings of John Coltrane, he reverted to a very sophisticated, clean-cut manner [...]

Jazz Blog Special: Gabor Szabo: 'Bacchanal'
I'm not sure whether I heard Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo's rendition of "Sunshine Superman" or Donovan's original first. I do know, though, that after listening to Szabo's version on a college radio station, I made "Bacchanal" one of the first albums I ever purchased with my own money. Listening to "Bacchanal" now, more than 40 [...]

The Daily Choice: Gabor Szabo - Comin' Back
I used to work for Light In The Attic and a lot of amazing things (including The Daily Choice and my association with the very wonderful folk at Sound on the Sound) came from it. It's been a while now since our paths have parted but the love I have for the fine folk who [...]

Gabor Szabo :: Jazz Raga
A friend passed the reissue of Gabor Szabo's Jazz Raga off to me at a bar just as the summer began to kick in here in Los Angeles. Unlike much of the country, the season here is a creeper-coming on slowly, all hazy, unpredictable and noir like something out of a Thomas Pynchon novel. As [...]

Any Major Beatles Covers: 1967-68
The second mix of Beatles covers comprises songs from the group's 1967-68 period, ending rather abruptly in the middle of the White Album selection. So the third mix will carry on with songs from that double album (leading with the Beach Boys doing Back In The USSR). There are some quite unexpected covers. Ella Fitzgerald singing Savoy Truffle? Soul group The Moments singing Rocky Racoon, of all songs? Some performers are also surprising. Bill Cosby, for example. The stand-up comic did an album of covers in 1969, including Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It's not mugging for [...]
