By: David Schultz Tea Leaf/Galactic Photo: Jeremy Gordon On the eve of the Saints' first ever Super Bowl appearance, New Orleans' funkmeisters Galactic brought a bit of the French Quarter to New York City this past Friday night, packing people into the spacious Terminal 5 for a wild night of Mardi Gras-tinged reveling. A guest laden night, Galactic received tremendous infusions of energy from
New Orleans-based jazz-funk ensemble Galactic fell in love with the local funk scene while watching legendary artists like Professor Longhair, The Meters and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. They're also inspired by hip-hop and electronica which they incorporate into their mix. Their latest release, Ya-Ka-May , features a bevy of greats, including The Soul Queen of New Orleans Irma Thomas , on " Heart of Steel " which is Today's Top Tune.
Over the past few years, a few bands and promoters have come up with a number of innovative ways to generate interest in concerts by giving the audience a chance to influence the performance. Whether it was the Disco Biscuits letting fans "Spin The Wheel" to determine what song gets played on a Thursday night in Sayreville, NJ or Steely Dan letting ticketholders' votes determine the setlist for Internet Request Nights , audience participation gives consumers more bang for their buck and a stake in the action. The trend continues with Galactic's Throwdown Request Live spots and [...]
We've talked about our gripes with New York City's Terminal 5 a bunch on this blog, so it's extremely surprising to see that the venue ranked #3 in Pollstar's list of the Top 100 Worldwide Club Venues . Clearly, this list is based on tickets sold and not on "patrons who can actually see the stage." I haven't been to Terminal 5 in a while and I'm returning this weekend for Galactic and TLG and then next weekend for Trey Anastasio, so I'm hoping they've improved the sight line situation. [...]
Sorry We're Slacking We've not kept up too well the past fews days on the blogging. Apologies for sure. We had plenty of work in PhD land, a meeting to plan for our trip to China and some film work....

In the video below, Galactic speaks about the blending of musical styles that have occurred in New Orleans and how this musical melting pot has influenced their writing and recording. The video will certainly tickle your fancy if you are a fan of Galactic and their explosive live show. Stanton Moore is such a badass drummer to watch behind the kit .. Keep a lookout for their upcoming release Ya-Ka-May ( Anti- ) which is due out on February 9th. Also, check out the article EQ Magazine did on the group and their recording of the [...]

Hey Vagabonds! Sorry for being MIA over the past week, I've been on a bit of a vacation. I had the pleasure of visit from a dear friend from high school. Before we took off for a couple days of riding up in the nations highest peaks, I took him to see Tea Leaf Green . "Who's Tea Leaf Green?", he asked. I was seriously shocked. Feldman is big into the jam scene, so I figured he probably knew about them from seeing them at a festival like I did. After all, their hit "Taught To Be Proud", [...]

ARTIST: Galactic - [Album] with free mp3 download for 'Dark Water' from Ya-Ka-May. DATE: 01-20-10 REVIEW BY: Bill Adams Anyone familiar with the city of New Orleans knows it has a rich cultural and artistic history. Over the last fifty years (at least), volumes have been written about the city's contributions to ragtime, soul, jazz, rock and blues as well as the artists that developed their chops in the Big Easy but it's only the history that ever [view more]
The last seven days have been one giant roller coaster ride of emotions. The excitement over our interview with Bonnaroo founder Ashley Capps and the numerous summer festivals that dished out their 2010 bills this week soon subsided after we learned of the untimely death of Jay Reatard and Teddy Pendergrass. But then there's our weekly Friday Mixtape, which always puts us in a good mood. After all, as always, we get to present you with the week's best new mix of singles, remixes, and covers as well as mp3s from some acts you should check [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , Movies It's not often you hear big news from fictional beauty pageant bands, but Sexual Chocolate -- fronted by Randy Watson (aka Eddie Murphy ) -- hasn't really been in the public eye since their film debut in the 1988 comedy ' Coming to America .' The band's musical director, Karl Denson, tells Spinner that Sexual Chocolate has been busy playing fictional beauty pageants but will perform a real-life one-off gig on Jan. 7. [...]

It seems rather hard to believe, but 2010 marks the 20th anniversary for venerable jam-act moe. The band will mark the occasion starting with a short Northeast tour that kicks offs with a two shows at New York's Roseland Ballroom on January 22 & 23. The show on the 22nd will serve as a special guest-laden benefit show for WHY (World Hunger Year) . This is probably the most exciting interview we have done since our inception. "A Huge influence on bands like Daft Punk, SPACE sold 12 million records across 4 albums from 1977-81, and are sadly referred to as one of Europe's great forgotten innovators of the 1970's" NO WAY should spAce be forgotten! Whilst a certain Parisian electronic duo were still (probably impossibly chic) toddlers, French band /production SPACE had worked out that making lots of hooky synth disco and wearing Space suits [...]

Relix has a fantastic rundown of what went down this weekend at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass music festival in Golden Gate Park. I went down there on Saturday and caught me some Dr. Dog, then Billy Bragg, then Galactic, and finally Neko Case to finish off my day. I had a great sunburn when I got home, too.
