Bang on the money this week: gin in hand, more snow outside, Andy Williams is playing… You know that feeling (maybe?) that you just want something to dance to that your Dad used to play on vinyl when you were small… I still have the moves, Pops: Can't Take My Eyes Off You , followed by a bit of Moon River . Anyway, enough of that. You can just hear that needle ripping across the record… focus, focus. This week I'm enjoying Cate Le Bon's Puts Me [...]

Galaxie 500 casts such a long shadow in the indie rock universe (including but not limited to the long career of Damon and Naomi) that it's easy to forget that they were together for only a few years and produced only three studio albums, culminating in 19902s This Is Our Music . They broke up shortly thereafter, in 1991, spawning the aforementioned duo of drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang. (As a side note, I could have sworn that I had seen Galaxie 500 open for They Might Be Giants at the Hatch Shell in Boston in 1992, [...]
French webzine The Drone has a video interview (in English) with Dean Wareham talking about Galaxie 500 and including some live clips of Dean & Britta playing Galaxie 500 songs at the Fleche D'Or in Paris in last year. Dean Wareham interview at The Drone .
Obviously "Friday recycling" will eventually involve me re-recycling... like this On the back of the treat that was the video of Galaxie 500 at Glastonbury that turned up on Dimeadozen earlier in the week here's a great recording of their complete show at The Roskilde Festival in Denmark a couple of weeks later. I wrote it up better before and took the opportunity to point out Dean's opinion on festivals (because it's similar to mine) "The truth is that you hate most of the bands. Well, you hate their music, and isn't that the [...]

A previously uncirculated DVD of bands playing at the 1990 Glastonbury Festival has just turned up on Dimeadozen - it includes four tracks by Galaxie 500 (Decomposing Trees, Melt Away, Snowstorm and Ceremony) and during Snowstorm you can spot Kramer turning up on stage (as mentioned in Black Postcards In the middle of our third song I heard a sound behind me - it sounded like someone else was playing guitar. Kramer, He had given the house sound engineer some pointers and had quickly made his way through the crowd to the stage, [...]

Words, videos and photos by Brendan Sullivan This past year, I witnessed somewhere between 80 and 90 concerts, depending on your definition of what qualifies as a "concert" and also on my list-making abilities and forgetfulness. I can't think of any that I genuinely hated. I can think of some that were lackluster, some that I had high hopes for that let me down, some that were fun at the time but leave me with nothing stellar to write about now, and some that were really good but didn't quite make the grade. [...]

Ryan Adams performs a cover of Galaxie 500's 'Blue Thunder' during a concert at the Orpheum Theater in Boston, MA.

It's pointless to pretend that I listened to 10 albums that were released in 2011, so I'm going to write about 10 classic albums that got a lot of airtime in my waxy ears this past year. 10. Peter Murphy - DEEP (1989) The reunion cash-grab tour seems to be here to stay and let's face it... it's hard for me to fight my curiosity. Last month, I saw Peter Murphy for the first time in 13 years-it wasn't a reunion or comeback tour by [...]
So many covers today! Here's another one: Ryan Adams, playing live at Boston's Orpheum this weekend, doing a lovely solo-piano cover of Galaxie 5002s classic " Blue Thunder ," a sort of holy text for all the dreampop and slowcore that followed it. And since Galaxie 500 were a Boston-area band, that makes this a nice little bonus for the city that happened to be hosting Adams. Listen to his version below. Read More...

In the past few months, Ryan Adams has covered metal lords Iron Maiden , indie rock legend Bob Mould , and even the eternally-preppy Vampire Weekend . At last night's gig at Boston, MA's Orpheum Theatre, Adams' added dream-pop legends Galaxie 500 's "Blue Thunder" to his repertoire. Putting down the guitar for the piano, Adams crafted a slow, mournful little ditty, with cries of pain for vocals and an air of fragility as if it the whole ordeal weren't long for this world (not bad for putting it together during soundcheck ). Take [...]

One of my college roommates introduced me to Luna . Our copy of Bewitched was worn out in a matter of months. From there it was on to Penthouse and eventually I went all the way back to Galaxie 500 . This was the start of a beautiful friendship with the music of Dean Wareham. Been trying to get my hands on a decent live Luna show to share here, preferably one which includes "23 Minutes in Brussels" [...]
Neutral Milk Hotel's "Naomi" from Naomi Yang on Vimeo . Former Galaxie 500 bassist Naomi Yang, currently in Damon & Naomi , has directed a video for the 1996 Neutral Milk Hotel song that was supposedly written about her ("She walks through Cambridge..."). It might seem a little weird and narcissistic to lip-sync a love song to yourself, but Yang has nice teeth so hey, why not? In other Neutral Milk Hotel news, Jeff Mangum is going out on another tour in 2012 (I'm going, woo hoo!) and [...]

A week before the release of their awesome box set, Neutral Milk Hotel is back in the news with a music video for their classic, "Naomi".

Today is the 7th anniversary of the great man's passing. Spend the day considering just how important he was to music - no matter how hard you try, you will not be able to overestimate that impact! Here he is introducing Galaxie 5002s Listen The Snow is Falling (mp3 via Box.net) - this has been lifted from the very excellent Keeping It Peel podcast . Previously: Here's last year's John Peel Day post from where you can download the [...]

here's a couple of songs from galaxie 500 - from a peel session recorded for BBC Radio 12s John Peel Show, 1989 & 1990. just wonderful.
![[Ones To Watch] – Introducing – Netherlands](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3746982_lg.jpg)
Tweet Chicago , Boston , Europe ... You could be forgiven for thinking that Netherlands might be, you know, Dutch. They're not, though. They're roughly as Dutch as I am - in name only. Did you know the name Rutherford was originally Dutch? Did you care? Anyway, the point is that Netherlands are from Southampton, are now based in London, and to the best of my knowledge have not a Flemish bone in their bodies. Continuing with the international theme, [...]

Frank Yang If someone were to start one of those, "Who the eff are The Shins ?" Tumblrs, there'd be no shortage of content to start with. They were once called Flake Music. They were the band who got a song with lyrics about having "dirt in your fries" to soundtrack a McDonalds commercial. They were the band that helped establish Sub Pop as the sensitive pop label for the new century rather than the sweaty grunge label for the last one. They were the band whose keyboardist was a hero to indie boys for [...]
