The most startling revelation about Thursday night's show at the Autry Museum was how apparently few of the hips kids know where the Autry Museum is. For the record, the house that "The Singing Cowboy" built is right across the parking lot from the L.A. Zoo in Griffith Park. And although none of the bands covered the legendary performer's signature hit "Back in the Saddle Again" — no, not that "Back in the Saddle Again" — the trio of indie-rock acts did host a pretty good hoedown. Music's a lot like food: it doesn't matter where the chef got the recipe, so long as you enjoy the meal. Gamble House's self-titled debut is unavoidably an album hopelessly indebted to the music of Grizzly Bear, particularly singer Daniel Rossen, whose vocal timbre and chunky guitar style is imitated (or paid homage, take your pick) all over this collection. But to Gamble House's credit, these are all really good Grizzly Bear-sounding songs, the economical-but-tasty Ralph's brand breakfast cereal to Grizzly Bear's Raisin Bran. It's as if the only reading material available in the country are back issues of Hit Parader magazine circa 1981 - 1991 and all the upstart bands think that metal from that decade is still cool around the world. There are as many sleaze/glam bands coming from Sweden today as there were from the Sunset Strip in LA 20 years ago. There are also tons of Sabbath-inspired bands, like The Graviators whose sludgy, doomy metal would make Ozzy and Tony Iommi proud. [...]

Hopefully we'll get an answer to that question tomorrow when Gamble House records their Donewaiting "Live at Electraplay" session a few hours before hitting The Basement stage as the opening act for Rogue Wave .
