The June edition of THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES takes place this evening at 3 Clubs in Hollywood and features 3 local bands with bright futures, a special guest DJ and free admission. CHASING KINGS are bringing it home tonight and we can't wait to see them tear up the backroom of 3 Clubs. Sincere key-laden indie pop at its finest, CHASING KINGS excel in crafting classic melodies coupled with memorable hooks. From what we've been hearing their gathering new fans along the tour this week and must be caught before they [...]
[Fabrizio Moretti hits the big three-oh today. Drinks at the Little Joy?] Top 5 ways to get through your humpday: ☛ Born-again indie band Hot Hot Heat (that's the video for "21@12," above) kicks off its residency at the Bootleg Theater, with up-and-coming pop fanatics Chasing Kings and swoonworthy Stone Darling opening. ☛ School of Seven Bells (refresher course: Benjamin Curtis from Secret Machines, with Alejandra and Claudia Deheza of On!Air!Library!) debuts music from its sophomore album "Disconnect [...]
Active Child Saturday was the inaugural Waved Out Fest at the Echo and Echoplex, running from 3:30pm to 2am. The festival featured emerging local and national artists, with sixteen bands playing on two stages, with live screenprinting from Hit + Run, several food trucks, and tons of free ice cream. It was hot, crowded, and loud—everything [...]

Florida quartet Surfer Blood , coming off a strong week of shows at SXSW and still riding the buzz they earned with their 2009 album "Astro Coast," has top billing in Saturday's Waved Out Music Fest, being presented by Aquarium Drunkard at the Echo and Echoplex. Depending on your tastes, you can go festival-crazy this weekend — the emo, hardcore and pop-rock kids will be flocking to Angels Stadium for the two-day Bamboozle California (which features AFI and a reunited Something Corporate), and on Sunday the Echoplex hosts the MusiCares charity event the Pow Fest [...]

My pals over at Aquarium Drunkard have given me a few pairs of tickets to give away for their Waved Out festival this Saturday at the Echoplex. The festivities commence at 3:30 and the show features some of the most hyped bands out there right now. I'm super into that Surfer Blood record right now, so that alone is worth the price of admission for me. Pals and comedians Matt Dwyer and Matt Braunger are hosting. To win these [...]
It's here, Los Angeles. This Saturday, March 27th Aquarium Drunkard, in conjunction with the Echo, is holding its inaugural all ages festival here in L.A. in Echo Park. Dubbed WAVED OUT, after my favorite Robert Pollard solo album, this is the first of what will be a recurring event featuring emerging national, local and international [...]

The first recordings from L.A.'s Gamble House could wear their Grizzly Bear comparisons like a stain, but the architect of the music, Ben Becker, prefers to think of them as a beauty mark. "I can't say I dislike it, because I have a huge admiration for what Grizzly Bear does," Becker says. "But ..." Gamble House's debut (not officially "released," Becker says, but available here ) does possess its own lush beauty. Its meticulous arrangements, sylvan imagery and soaring but oblique narratives straddle the often-unsettling line between wonderstruck and wistful, and it isn't hard to [...]

Gamble House's gamble, of course, is whether people will notice that the indie-folk project is a dead ringer for the vocal strains and guitar style of Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen - or whether they'll care. Decide for yourself at the group's free Silverlake Lounge Monday night residency, which continues tonight, but "Central Park" is at least one worthwhile derivative. Live, the Ben Becker-fronted group goes electric (or at least they did last week, and to excellent effect) and will be playing to an audience of dozens rather than the Hollywood Palladium, which I'd say are two more checks in the [...]

[mp3] Gamble House: "Central Park" Early this morning, before coffee, we listened to "Central Park" by the LA group Gamble House as recommend by Some Velvet Blog , who called their self-titled debut "one of the best debut albums of the year so far." Coupled with the sounds coming out of the speakers, we got a rare pre-caffeine bolt of adrenaline. Gamble House purvey a gauzy and delicate brand of orchestral folk that lands somewhere between Midlake and Grizzly Bear, and sounds like walking through the woods in [...]

The LA band Gamble House have just released their self-titled debut and it's one of the best debut albums of the year so far. Originally the solo bedroom project/work of Ben Becker, Gamble House has now grown in to a "band" and with it comes a stunning, intimate collection of songs that just sparkle. Based on just a couple of songs, I chose Gamble House as one of my artists to watch for 2010 and their new album more than delivers on the promise of the few songs [...]

[Once around the residencies as I try to decide how I feel about the new Angels & Airwaves album, "LOVE," which I downloaded free last night [ background ] ...] Princeton , fresh off a Thursday show opening for Editors, return to the cozier confines of Spaceland, supported by Le Switch , among others. ... Aushua and We Barbarians make for great openers at Useless Keys ' residency at the Echo. ... Gamble House plays [...]
Best Coast's Bobb Bruno & Bethany Cosentino Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Far too many exceptional shows last week including last night's NO CANCER! Benefit show with No Age , Vivian Girls , Best Coast , Graham Forest , Darker My Love and more. I do believe Bethany from Best Coast 's performance as one of their most entertaining yet. [...]

This month's heaping helping of appetizing residencies continues: At the Echo, where Useless Keys headline and Light FM supports, there's a set from band called L.E.F. — which features members of the late Viva K , a quartet that had a good thing going about four years ago (an album on Stinky Records, some love from KCRW) before the principals opened the Silver Lake eatery Elf. ... Princeton is the resident band at Spaceland, and the deliciously electro-funky Casxio supports. ... Jenny O and Rumspringa [...]

[Happy Grammy hangover, everyone. O.C.'s Gamble House , [...]

[Happy birthday to Lee Majors — the Six Million Dollar Man turns 70 today, and if you think there's no musical connection you've obvously never heard his 1981 tune "The Unknown Stuntman." ] Can't wait to hear what comes next from Casxio [pictured] — the L.A. quartet does a very sophisticated take on electro-soul, with bass-slinging frontman Lucas Guerin channeling Sly Stone while his bandmates provide very snug backing. They're one of the most underrated bands around, but maybe not for long. They headline Spaceland tonight. ... [...]
[Birthday greetings go out to Dolly Parton on this holiday Monday ...] Shapes up as a rather light night, concert-wise, unless you like your music free. The three Eastside resident bands are still going strong, and they have some fine guests too. L.A. alt-folk quintet the Amateurs [that's their newish video for "Omaha Nights" above] join the fray at the Echo, where Robert Francis has been doing Mondays and Avi Buffalo and Lex Land also perform. ... Correatown is one of the [...]
