Keith "Guru" Elam Tribute Mix by Dj Premier Blog Radio on Mixcloud
As I mentioned earlier , Gang Starr was one of those hip hop groups that was the perfect storm. Guru with his laid back and smooth delivery and DJ Premier with the uber perfect sample selection and groundbreaking choruses. Despite the bitter pill Premier was forced to swallow after Guru's death, he still managed one hell of a tribute. Regardless on what side you took surrounding the events leading up to his declining health and ultimate demise, Hip-Hop shed their collective tears just five days ago when it lost a pillar of its storied foundation in Keith "Guru" Elam, due to cancer. He, along with the legendary DJ Premier , brought a sense of unity and harmony in their basic MC/DJ setup for over a decade strong. You never heard a discussion of "classic Hip-Hop" without any sort of remnants of their legacy being mentioned, and with Guru to be forever immortalized [...]

The untimely passing of Keith 'Guru' Elam (he of Gangstarr and Jazzmatazz fame) has left a hole in the heart of hip hoppers the world over. But there's also been a little controversy. Yep... I'm talking about that letter . If you're not up to speed on 'the letter', here's what's gone down in a nutshell. Following Guru's death, a letter allegedly written by him was released by his most recent producer, Solar. The letter effectively denounced Guru's relationship with his Gangstarr brother in arms DJ Premier, banning him from being involved in any tribute [...]

Gang Starr - Just To Get a Rep Its been a long while since I've blogged but thought I should pay my own tribute to Guru. Not the most original tribute by any means but a great tune and a reminder of a time when Hip Hop had a conscience, often spoke about the futility of greed and violence and Guru's voice was loud. Sublime has been mainly broken up since the overdose of lead singer Brad Nowell in 1996, and fans have had to mainly do without the fantastic SoCal band. The surviving members took the stage last night in L.A. with 21-year-old Rome Ramirez, and according to Spin Magazine, the house was rocking. IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR. FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED "CREATIVE SPACE", BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY. I'VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL [...]

I am saddened by the loss of Gang Starr MC, Keith Elam AKA Guru , to a battle with cancer Monday. And while I think that his memory should be for his life's work, contribution to hip-hop and culture as a whole, I am troubled by the letter that was purported to be his final message to family and fans. If Guru was indeed in a coma since February until his passing, the letter would seem an obvious forgery. There are 5 other points in the letter that I find hard to swallow: [...]

As expected, GURU obits, tributes, and remembrances are turning up at a much faster pace than were, say, reviews of his last few albums. But it's not just the knee-jerk nonsense that's annoying here. It's the fact that shitheads who either never did care or haven't cared about GURU in years are writing irresponsible pieces ( for the record - I am not in that category ). I'm not saying that everything is trash; Jon Caramanica of the New York Times did an especially thorough job (unfortunately, his [...]
