Last night I got a chance to hangout with J Irvin Dally last night when he came through San Diego on a mini tour with Garrett Pierce. We took them out for burritos and met up with them at Bar Pink for a free show. Its cool to see how much he's grown since I first found out about him last year. He's been a huge supporter of ours by playing some IC events- including the SXSW Silver Series and the LA 25 event. There's just something really unique about Jordan. He's got this nostalgic style, this jazz [...]

After signing to Narnack Records to release the upcoming City of Sand , Garrett Pierce has scheduled a series of tour dates through California and one up in Portland, where he'll spread his dark, lush folk stylings to many along the way. This tour includes three local stops (two of which are next week!): the Crepe Place on May 16th (with Agent Ribbons and New Heirlooms), Bottom of the Hill on May 17th (with Strand of Oaks and Joe Pug), and the Starry Plough on July [...]

Tweet "Statue Song," which accompanies the video above, is the first offering from Davis/SF artist Garrett Pierce 's upcoming album, City of Sand , due out later this year on Narnack Records . I recently commented on the inadequacy of the "singer-songwriter" label , and that sentiment certainly holds true for Pierce, whose mixture of moving melodies and frequently heartbreaking lyrics can produce results that are no less than astonishing. By way of further example, 20092s All Masks , one [...]
Tonight, Laura Gibson returns to San Francisco just after her performance at Noise Pop 2010 to promote a collaborative album with Portland recording artist Ethan Rose (Rickshaw 8pm, $10). Bridge Carols is a phenomenal piece of work, laying Gibson's delicate pick-and-whisper over Rose's warm electronic hums. It should find popularity amongst those interested in artists that crossover between folk and ambient, such as Volcano Choir or even Azure Ray. Two hearty folk/Americana local openers accompany Gibson on this bill: Emily Jane White [...]

The Bay Area may not have a single unified scene, but its diverse musical communities produced a ton of acclaimed records in 2009. The following list collects thirty-two of the highlights that made this another banner year for Bay Area indie music. It's a collection that showcases the depth of Bay Area indie in 2009, and one suspects that few other regions have offered this volume of quality releases this year. A couple of qualifiers: This isn't a comprehensive list of excellent local records from 2009 or intended as any sort of official Bay Bridged [...]

In preparing some end-of-the-year features that will run over the next week, we were once again struck by how many Bay Area bands made a significant impact on indie music this year. We were pleased to sit down with some of the Bay Area's best this year for interviews on our podcast, and have collected music from 10 of our favorite interviewed bands for this recap episode. If you like what you hear, check out our podcast episodes spotlighting each of these bands. This will be our last podcast of the year, but we'll be continuing [...]
[Locals Only is a regular feature where the Stranger Dance staff focus on the best and brightest of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. Feel free to hit us up with any information on local bands, musicians, shows, and other music-related events and projects.] This week boasts several unique events: Mark Eitzel performing American Music Club at the Red Devil Lounge, a BYOB rock show at Flux53 in Oakland (presented by our buds over at Kata Rokkar), the Proclaimers (!) at Bottom of [...]

What is the Conspiracy of Venus , might you ask? The last chance to find out before the leaves turn will be Wednesday at their "season finale" with Garrett Pierce and Devotionals at The Rickshaw (8pm, $). Director Joyce Todd McBride started the choir in January 2007, which sums to roughly 40-50 lovely female voices to date. Conceptually speaking, McBride describes the Conspiracy of Venus as "a symphony of sound unique to the pre-existing A Capella format, and so contemporary, you're humming it on the way out!" [...]

Good morning, dear hearts. Have we had a Holy Crap Alert in a while? Usually an HCA comes in the form of some straight-out-of-nowhere band that has an insane new take on things that adds one more step to the stairway to heaven. Today's alert, however, comes from a more personal, local place. As in "wait a second, I thought I lived here and paid attention to music, so how did I miss Garrett Pierce?" Personal expectations and shame aside, I'm stoked on Garrett Pierce's All Masks , and I'm glad to have finally paid [...]

Editor's note: 'What happened last weekend' is a new way for our staff to share with you snippets from live shows they attended the past weekend. Remember that you can always tag your photos of local shows with "TheBayBridged" on Flickr and they'll appear on our front page; you can also alert us to your show coverage, whether that be photos, YouTube videos, thoughts about a show, or anything else. Bart Davenport @ the Hemlock, Sunday May 3 [...]

This Sunday, local singer-songwriter Garrett Pierce presents to San Francisco his second full-length on Crossbill Records , All Masks, with a record release show at Cafe du Nord . Check out our recent podcast with Pierce for several cuts from the celebrated release, which centers around mythological journey and mystical instrumentation (he'll be supported by a few of these musicians on Sunday, such as Jen Grady , pictured above). Garrett Pierce - "Running from the Face" He'll be joined by [...]

I am not going to lie to you, I posted a couple of weekends ago on Garrett Pierce ( here ) and I was so impressed that I immediately went and purchased his debut album "Like A Moth". Another winner. I then discovered it was up on IODA, so this is perfect, I am posting on Mr. Pierce once again. "Like A Moth" is actually a bit more acoustic singer-songwriter than his newly released "All Masks" and is a real gem of an album. It doesn't hit you over the head, but merely massages [...]

Subscribe to the The Bay Bridged weekly podcast to get each new episode downloaded free to your iTunes the moment it's published! This week's podcast features Garrett Pierce , a singer-songwriter whose new album, All Masks , comes out today on Crossbill Records . The album is Pierce's third solo work and it has quickly become one of our favorite records of '09 so far. Garrett's voice and lyrics remain central to every song, but his music also reflects the talented community of artists with whom he [...]

So one of the benefits of music blogging is musicians and labels and people in "the biz" tend to know each other and recommend back and forth to themselves AND you. The good thing is often artists of the same ilk will fall into same circles, discuss with same folks and recommend each other. Not unlike the blog world, if you have similar tastes, you would almost consider yourself friends because you are both bloggers - kind of "on the same side" mentality. Before I start rambling to much, my point is that due to another post I did on [...]
With his upcoming album, All Masks , coming out this April, Garrett Pierce is offering all of us a preview of what's to come with a video for the new track "And the Ghosts Boarded Trains". Filmed last Fall down in Big Sur, the video was directed by Matt Amato whose previous work includes Bon Iver, Dido, Beach House, and Heath ledger. All Masks will be released on Crossbill Records and with its release Garrett Pierce will embark on a West Coast tour. For more information about the [...]

Seldom seen - they've been broken up since 2003 I've blogged a few times now about bands that are no longer together — my first post was about Drag the River , a favorite band of mine who recently parted ways — and it never gets any easier. It's especially sad when you've only seen the band once or twice, and anticipate their future, and especially getting to see them again. So I think this time I'm going to avoid getting all sincere and melancholy, and do what I've failed to do so far during [...]
