"I have to be honest, for the longest time the only album I owned on vinyl was the Bangles' Different Light." "They are my favorite band of all time, still. I was so influenced and inspired by them as a kid. I was so enthralled with a sexy, all girl group. They were rock and roll to me! Not to mention, they were LIKE me. Their existence and success made me feel as though my dreams were even more achievable. I grew up listening to my dad's vinyl. He had a [...]

We've been fans of L.A. songwriter Garrison Starr for a decade now, watching her kick around various clubs and release a half dozen fine, shamefully unheralded albums of sometimes twangy, often rough-edged folk/rock -- with equal emphasis on each. Live, she's simply bundle of tightly wound energy, slowing down at times for a killer ballad or off-the-cuff witticism. Her impossibly catchy new song "Upside Down", written and recorded with Nini Camps, recently premiered on the teenage catfight drama "Pretty Little Liars". It also sports a killer hook and some Ingrid Michaelson-styled vocal harmonics. [...]
Ah the joys of a singer-songwriter show, when one must buckle down, sway, and master the art of understated head-nods. I tend to experience shows of such variety by answering two simple questions: (1) Does every freakin' song sound the same? And (2), does it matter? Lo and behold, Los Angeles supergroup The Rescues surprised me [...] More like it: Live Review: Annuals at Cafe Du Nord Live Review: Menomena at Cafe Du Nord LIVE REVIEW: El Perro Del Mar & Taken By [...]

The guitarlicious five-piece Vanaprasta has been on our short list of L.A. indie rockers to watch for about a year , and this month's release of its "Healthy Geometry" EP did nothing to make our interest wane. Now the quintet has recorded a cover of LCD Soundsystem's "All My Friends" — a track that was covered, rather notably, in 2007 by a guitar band named Franz Ferdinand. Vanaprasta might very well have one-upped the British lads, turning the song almost neurotic with its scratchy guitar licks. The song will appear on the forthcoming charity compilation [...]
Jay Nash is on a roll. He's been touring from coast to coast here in the States and managed to find time to head over to Copenhagen to record for his new EP, all the stars in Copenhagen that hits iTunes and other outlets on June 16th. In Copenhagen, Jay's drummer Frederik Bokkenheuser assembled a band of his old friends - Søren Andersen, Jesper Edvarson and Lars Andresen. Together with Frederik
The interesting thing about classic American genres - gospel, R+B, folk, blues, songbook standards - is simply how truly timeless the music really is, able to take various interpretations, from faithful to radical reworking, and not only survive but thrive in new hands. Not everything works, of course, but that's sort of the point: the songs live on to another day. When New York's Josh Joplin and Nashville's Garrison Starr decided to join forces as new entity Among the Oak and Ash and tackle the updating of a batch of dusty Appalachian ballads, the two singer/songwriters found a [...]
You may recall Garrison Starr from her major label days at Geffen Records or maybe the two she did with Vanguard. Either way, she's always been an indie troubadour at heart. Here Garrison, accompanied by Jay Nash, performs "Gasoline" live at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee: Besides often touring with Jay, over the years Garrison has toured with Rhett Miller (from Old 97's), Edwin McCain, Mindy
