Following on from yesterdays lost sixties artifact, here's a similar gem from the 1970's; Gary Higgins debut long player 'Red Hash' came out in March 1973, unfortunately for Higgins he was already locked up in a maximum security prison, the victim of a cannabis bust. He was also one of Nixon's first victims in the newly declared 'War On Drugs' (How's that working out for ya?) and spent many years behind bars. The record was discovered by a new audience & 'Red Hash' was re-released in 2005: It's a beautiful collection of frazzled, folky blues. Get your copy [...]
"I left Tacoma a short while ago. Um, I drove just by the outskirts of Seattle, disappointingly unable to spend any real amount of time there, considering my drive today is seven hours to Missoula, Montana. Um, but, I don't envision this being the last time I'm in the Seattle area, for sure. I've been [...]
For the past 13 years, the Truck Festival has been the UK's low-key alternative to conglomerates like Glastonbury, and with the United State's own festival scene close to reaching over saturation , the American version of Truck seeks to do the same. The second installment of Truck America is being held from September 9-11 at the Big Indian campground just two-and-half-hours north of New York City, and the lineup for this year's shindig looks quite different from most other major U.S. fests. Headlining the festivities are The [...]

by Andrew Sacher A Dream A While Back Psychedelic songbird Gary Higgins reissued the beautiful artifact Red Hash on Drag City back in 2005 . The album was originally recorded in 1973 but Gary was jailed for drug charges before it was finished. His friends completed mixing the album, titled it, and released it on the small label Nufusmoon. The album was recorded with members of two of Gary's previous bands, [...]

This is another solid chance to look back into Gary Higgins's musical past. In the world of reissues, Gary Higgins's Red Hash is one of the great success stories. Given new light by Drag City in 2005, it proved a brilliant and surprisingly timeless folk record. 2009's Seconds, though, Higgins first new music in over three decades, couldn't capture the same lightning in a bottle. Songs plodded along, as did the overly long stories they told, and it all seemed like the days of Red Hash's bittersweet wandering...

After a bit of a hiatus, Wild Weekend comes a-callin' again. Ready for issue 53? Right on and tally ho. This weeks harvest: a gospel scorcher, a garage blast and a soul gem, amongst others. Featuring no less than three songs from vinyl sources, so the purists among you have plenty reason to be proud of me. Make it a wild one, y'all. Let´s begin with a rather obscure bearded folkie: Gary Higgins. If you love his '73 masterpiece Red Hash like I do, you'll be pleased to [...]

This slab's touted only by dudes with money in their pockets to hunt down dusty originals. Not quite tripe, but Gary Higgins turned in some pretty boring stuff.

so i've just finished the third revision of my top 100 albums list - which to avoid confusion/arguments is a personal selection, not an attempt at a best of all time list - and to build some interest/excitement in the list beyond myself and the 1-2 other people that have traditionally cared about this i've decided to do a ten day countdown leading up to my number 1 album choice, vh1 best [whatever] of [decade] style. [100 - 91] [90-81] 80. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy / Matthew [...]

"The cows bawl, the pigs bawl, the horses bawl, too..." Over lunch yesterday, my 8 year old daughter told me that she wanted to live on a farm when she would finally be all grown up. Far from the madding crowd, surrounded by nature and with all kinds of animals to tend to. For some reason, this totally made my day. Little Feat - Down On The Farm MP3 The Kinks - Animal Farm MP3 The Bently Boys - Down On Penny´s Farm MP3 [...]

Know why Superman feels the need to save the newspaper industry? Because FREE sells more than un-free; or, in other words, the blogs are winning. But what is our society giving up by demanding so much of everything online to be "free"? That remains to be seen, but quality investigative journalism seems to be one of the early casualties. As for the music industry, it's a similar problem we're faced with. You want FREE. We give FREE. And somewhere kittens are crying. Huh? Whatever dude, it's FRIDAY! That's right woodchuck chuckers, it's Free Music Friday time on EF!! Guilt-free LEGAL [...]

What do flutes, harpsichord solos, kids laughing distantly, well-articulated lyrics, and fanciful images of women floating on Centipedes have in common? Two things actually. The first is, more or less, late 1960s and early 1970s prog-rock. The second is Gary Higgins' second studio album, titled Seconds , that's been 35 years in the making. Despite all the psychedelic embellishments mentioned above, Higgins writes music that is about as straightforward as it gets. Progressions and tempos seem pulled directly from [...]

I can't believe I missed this one... at the end of September, Drag City will be releasing Gary Higgins his first album since 1973's ' Red Hash ', the appropriately titled 'Seconds'. After being "found" by Drag City, with help from Six Organs Of Admittance's Ben Chasny and revitalized by the reissuing of his 'lost' masterpiece 'Red Hash', Higgins found himself in a position where he was able to work on new material. In Higgins own words: "The motivation to do another record was not hard to find. Having a group of new songs I [...]
Beardo. As I mentioned last week while discussing Death's For The Whole World To See, the Drag City label is no stranger to digging up and releasing the long lost and nearly forgotten. In 2005 the label pulled a similar trick re-releasing Gary Higgins' 1973 LP Red Hash, a psych-folk classic and precursor to what [...]

Recorded during one forty-hour period in 1973, 'Red Hash' by Gary Higgins is one of the great 'lost' albums of all time. A lovely, sad, wistful folk album, 'Red Hash' was recorded so quickly because Higgins had recently been arrested on drug charges and was facing years in prison. Shortly after the album was self released on his own Nufusmoon label, Higgins seemed to disappear and seemingly gave up a career in music, firstly serving out his prison sentence and later falling into domestic life marrying and having a child, and 'Red Hash' fell into the abyss. [...]
