OF LATE I've been listening to a lot of Britpop, the defining music of my yoof. And by "a lot", I don't mean sticking on What's The Story (Morning Glory). I mean I've been listening to long-forgotten albums by the likes of Gay Dad and Spacehog, trawling charity shops for Gene singles, outbidding people on eBay for the right to hear Longpigs b-sides. Basically I've pushed deeper and harder into the recesses of '90 guitar pop than I've ever been. Alas Spotify doesn't allow for a lot of this, but nevertheless I felt compelled to put [...]
Tomorrow marks the release of Strapped , the new album by Californian noiseniks The Soft Pack. (You can stream the record at Spin right now, if you're so inclined.) For those not familiar with the band's history, they used to be known as The Muslims, a name that caused them all sorts of predictable problems and was eventually ditched in favor of their current moniker circa 2009. So, to celebrate The Soft Pack's new record, we thought we'd look at some of music's other great controversy-courting band names. Warning: naughty words [...]

![Which British Pop Acts Should Be Classicalized Next? [The Middlest Of Brows]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1210031_lg.jpg)
September will, in the UK at least, see the issue of Songs Without Words , a collection of pop-rock hits that have been "classicalized." David Bowie, Sting, Coldplay—all your middlebrow favorites, given the ultimate middlebrow treatment. This is nothing new, of course; Christopher O'Riley has tenderly massaged the Radiohead catalog two times , and done the same for other artists' work as well. Still, a few big British names have been tragically overlooked in this "let's show everyone that this stuff is legitimate " sweepstakes, so we'd like to see which [...]
