My own wishful relative from a different mother, harnesses the vintage Original classic and partners around a smack-bang-up-to-date 2012 sprinkle across glittery & sparkling waters. Its Gene Chandler with Zimmer , twiddling those extra special knobs and keys . GENE CHANDLER - Does She Have A Friend? (Zimmer Edit)

In this instalment in the Covered With Soul series we have a second selection of soul songs covered by soul acts. We have met most of the featured artists before, perhaps none more so than Erma Franklin. Here we have Erma covering a song originally performed by her bigger sister, Aretha Franklin (whose 70th birthday we have just celebrated). One act here is quite unlike any of the others we have heard in this series: Una Valli was not only white (as were the Flaming Embers), but also South African, having some local success as a soul singer in the [...]
While I would never lay claim to any particular city as being my be-all-end-all FAVORITE soul city, I feel a special affinity with the sound, feel, groove and messages portrayed within Chicago soul. Chicago soul has a certain swagger and pride within all of the different sounds associated with the city. Gene Chandler had a massive hit early on in his career (the ubiquitous "Duke Of Earl") but the man's catalog is chock full of gems that have been underground fanatic favorites since their release. Whether it's the timeless ballads such as "Rainbow", or the [...]

Back when I was producing Hip Hop I used to spend endless days digging through old records, finding the most random but amazing music. One of the songs I came across was this incredible live performance by a dude named Gene Chandler. Now Gene had two pretty big hits in the 602s and was a huge part of the Chicago Soul movement but if you're into soul chances are you've heard The Duke of Earl & Groovy Situation . What you probably haven't heard is Rainbow '65 Part 1 & 2 . The song is basically 6 minutes [...]

Summer is here and you need those pool party tunes to get you through the blistering heat. Zimmer's music is a feel good, body-warming and enthusiastic wave that goes straight to the heart and stays until the end of the night. Growing up between France and California, this young producer is a gentle combination of both worlds : west coast carefree attitude with a twist of parisian chic. Call it horizontal disco or elegant funk, he's all about groove, with [...]

Zimmer 's music is a feel good, body-warming and enthusiastic wave that goes straight to the heart and stays until the end of the night. Growing up between France and California, this young producer is a gentle combination of both worlds : west coast carefree attitude with a twist of parisian chic. Call it horizontal disco or elegant funk, he's all about groove, with influences ranging from Ben E. King to Midnight Star. His favorite contemporary producers include Aeroplane, Moullinex, or Alan Braxe. When not producing, he also DJs in low-ceiling clubs and fancy parties. He [...]

In the 6 th volume of soul covers, we have the great Grady Tate's interpretation of the Theme of M*A*S*H and versions of songs previously recorded by Gil Scott-Heron, Bob Dylan, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Elvis Presley, James Taylor, Righteous Brothers, Tammy Wynette, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Joe South, Rolling Stones, Credence Clearwater Revival, James Brown, Cream , Peggy Lee, The Beatles, The Flamingos, Julie Andrews, Nat 'King' Cole, Billy Joel and Cat Stevens. Quite a mixed bag. This mix features a fair number of country songs remade as soul songs, showing how close the two [...]

Check out these two tracks out below from the young Parisian. Also, if the sun is shining where you are, or even if it's not, his recent mix is sure to brighten up your day. I was expecting quite a slo-mo dose of disco but this is [...]

Although he'll always be most remembered for "Duke Of Earl," Gene Chandler was much more than a one-hit wonder. Over a long and successful career he had countless records that hit the charts even if they might not have quite reached the heights of his number-one seller. Born Eugene Dixon in Chicago, his singing career began to come together in the late 1950s but his membership in a doo-wop group called the Dukays was interrupted by his Army service. He resumed singing after his return in 1960 and the Dukays began hitting the recording studio. After a couple [...]
