I have previously posted some German versions of English-language hits sung by the stars of these songs themselves. Here's a mix of 29 such songs, spanning just over a decade, from 1961-72. The fashion of Anglophone artists to record in various European languages hit overdrive in the mid-'60s. As mainland Europe's biggest record market, Germany benefited (or not) from that fashion in particular. Some artists just recorded a few songs, often used as b-sides (for example, The Supremes' German version of Where Did Our Love Go was the flip side of the English-language Moonlight And Kisses). Others recorded [...]

Filed under: News , R.I.P. Aaron Schroeder, a music publisher, producer and prolific songwriter with more than 2,000 writing credits to his name, died at his home, the Lillian Booth Actors' Home, in Englewood, N.J. on Dec. 2. He was 83. The cause was complications from a form of dementia, according to Dale Olson, his publicist. Among Schroeder's most well-known songwriting credits is Elvis Presley 's 1960 hit, 'It's Now or Never,' a song whose melody was derived from a Neapolitan standard 'O Sole Mio.' Presley expressed interest in the song [...]

Worst letter home ever. Love, Hal and Burt Gene Pitney - Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa
A good friend & avid vinyl collector used to make me numerous mix-tapes which I played to death driving around in my van. One came to mind yesterday & I found I could remember the hand-written insert & thus the name of the band who did what is certainly my favourite version of Town Without Pity. ♫ Town Without Pity - Thin White Rope Spoor (1995 compilation) - originally from the Red Sun EP (1988) website | buy Such a contrast [...]

Sufjan Stevens made the perfect killing song on his Illinoise album. The song not only tells the creepy tale of the convicted mass-murderer John Wayn Gacy Jr.; but also admits towards the end of the song that: In my best behavior, I am really just like him... look beneath the floorboards, for ...

On this Thanksgiving week edition, something for everyone, including fans of early nineties dance pop, seventies punk, and oldies where it totally sounds like the backup singers are saying 'poop chute.' If you like the music, go out and buy it, preferably at a real store that could actually use your money and preferably not on Friday because who wants to deal with that . These songs are only here until next week's mix goes up. (And if you're new to this site and don't get what's happening, click here and you might get your question answered.) [...]
We are so desperate for acknowledgement that we will warp beyond recognition the sentiments of any song, just so that it mirrors us, reflects our pain. This is a sorrowful time. A generation of would-be rock stars and half-baked Ph.D.s is emerging crestfallen from the longest youth in history. We're at the edge of the world with a patchwork of bleeding ambitions in one hand and a stonewashed sense of duty in the other. This little bit of trite, "I don't know what I want, but I want it now" would be true if it weren't for our [...]
