Here's a track from a new collaborative project featuring musicians from two of the best garage rock acts out there right now: Black Lips and Gentleman Jesse and His Men. The Gaye Blades' first album is out now on Norton Records , and the track "Don't Get Married" alone makes picking it up worth it. The chord progression and vocal melodies call out to rock 'n' roll's golden age-you know, a time when guys like Chuck Berry reigned supreme. However, the recording style and personality is lo-fi, filthy, and new. The song's subject matter is [...]

Atlanta brethren Gentlemen Jesse Smith and Jared Swilley of The Black Keys split songwriting duties on The Gaye Blades debut LP, released last September. It's a classic affair that puts grimy pop and punk finishes over highly melodic 1950s-inspired rock 'n' roll. As far as I can tell, the album only exists on vinyl pressed via the good folks at Norton Records, but it's well worth the near bargin bin pricing at just ten bucks. Smith's sweet power-pop chops and Swilley's antagonistic streak lend a nice one-two punch to the flow of the record, which also includes a superb cover [...]

March 20th / Douchemaster Stream: Gentleman Jesse and His Men- "All I Need Tonight (Is You)" / via /

Few records have instantaneously reeled me in like the fiery, sharp-cutting power-pop of Gentleman Jesse's 2008 debut, the cover of which appropriately paid homage to Elvis Costello's This Year's Model . Songs like "All I Need Tonight (Is You)" and "The Rest of My Days" had touches of everyone from The Exploding Hearts to Paul Collins, all wrapped in Jesse's distinctive musical personality: lyrically playful, rhythmically driven, and overflowing with fearsome and addictive pop hooks. Jesse's been quiet of late. He released two 7"s in 2010, but now it appears we're finally getting [...]

Thanks to a tip from the always tasteful Gentleman Jesse, I've recently been listening nonstop to the punk-glazed power-pop offerings of Indiana trio The Happy Thoughts. The band put out its debut LP via Hozac Records last spring and it's difficult to put into words just how fun, addictive, and charming these songs are. Sprinkling a bit of punk grime over late 50s and early 60s rock 'n' roll staples like Ritchie Valens, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Buddy Holly, The Happy Thoughts have created a crisp and unapologetically cheerful summertime record colored with frisky beats, handclaps, and sharp sing-along [...]
He's back, we're back, and the river's rising... Ted Leo's rescheduled Drunken Unicorn show is Wednesday night. He will be joined by Gentleman Jesse and Carnivores. Only $10 in advance. Not to be missed. Ted Leo - Even Heroes Have To Die Ted Leo - Joey (Concrete Blonde cover) Ted Leo - With Every Heartbeat (Robyn cover)
If there's a group putting out better '70s-sounding power pop records than Gentleman Jesse and His Men, I haven't heard 'em. "Got the Wrong Man," is but the latest in a string of spot-on period rock pieces by the Atlanta-based band which follow in the grand tradition of artists like The Jam, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, and Joe Jackson. They've got the style. They've got the hooks and the melody. And, whether they wanted them or not, they've even got the girl problems. MP3: Gentleman Jesse and His Men - Got the Wrong Man [...]

Photography by ME ! Wow! What a fun week we've been having, eh??? Well... now it's my turn! I've been a busy mammer-jammer getting my mixtape together for our Cranes Day 2 1/2 going on down in the society , as well as keeping you inundated with all kinds of mixtape fun here, but considering I'm the one who beckoned for Mixtapes Week, I knew I had to put another one together for the occasion - an occasion that seemed to catch the attention of the local [...]

We Are Trees Going into 2009's CMJ Festival , Surfer Blood, The xx and Warpaint were poised to be the breakout acts. In 2010, the field is wide open with over 1200 bands seeking approval from NYC audiences. Still, the bands that should generate the most attention are Lord Huron, We Are Trees, Cloud Nothings, Lower Dens, Wild Nothing, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Circle Pit, and Yuck. Out of that group, I expect Lord Huron, We Are Trees, and Lower Dens to come away with the most accolades of the festival. [...]

Make no mistake, Gentleman Jesse and His Men have been one of my favorite groups over the last few years. No matter what happens, I always return to their simplistic power-pop, and pogo about my room like a child. This is probably what we all needed a little bit more of in our life, isn't it? Well, lucky for you, Jesse and his posse have released a brand new 72 titled She's a Trap . I picked it up at his show not too far back, but you can [...]

Don't let the first 20 seconds on "She's a Trap," and those dubby, cut-up sounding guitars fool you. Gentleman Jesse and His Men aren't about to change, not when they've got that '70s, power pop sound down so good. After a short into, they're sent to the background, and it's back to the quick and immediate, blasting fun which made his debut record such a treat. MP3: Gentleman Jesse and His Men - She's a Trap The "She's a Trap 73 single is available now through Douchemaster Records . It's limited [...]

Jesse Smith, the former bassist of Atlanta's Carbonas, writes songs that are both immediate and infectious. His album Introducing Gentleman Jesse from 2008 is a study in classic post-punk powerpop From its Elvis Costello inspired cover to its nods to everyone from the Kinks to the [...]

Who likes power pop? I do. I do. Seriously, when I heard The Biters , I just went straight to iTunes and grabbed their EP. I mean, its part Exploding Hearts , part Gentleman Jesse , and all parts just awesome. There's nothing arty or dancy, or even intricate for that matter, it's just straight ahead rock n' roll, like the good old days. It fuels you with energy, and it'll make your smile large. You gid? Download: The Biters - Hang [...]
