There are plenty of shows to check out as New Year Eve. approaches
Let's be upfront here. New Year's Eve is not really our thing. But we know it's a big night out for a lot of folks and a boon to teenage babysitters everywhere. We'll be taking in our celebration a night early with Band of Horses, which is an NYE option only if you're willing [...]

I was going to do a list of my favorite records of the 00's, but as I was getting my list together I started to realize it was kind of boring. Really, how many music blogs do you need to tell you the same thing? That's when I began thinking about the records that came out over last 10 years that I thought were criminally ignored, or just didn't seem to get a fair shake. So what I've got for you is a list of my most underrated albums of the decade. Every one of these records [...]

Two weeks ago I posted a list of my 50 favorite albums of the past decade. You can catch up with that here , here , here , here , and here , if you'd like. Or, you know, just scroll down a little bit, I guess. That's probably easier. While drafting the list (there were 164 original considerations) I found that I rediscovered plenty of albums that were and are still worthy of more attention, even though they ultimately weren't included on the finished product. It was extremely difficult to cut many of them, [...]

Day 1 of a three-day trek to the Florida panhandle with Bobby Ubangi.
Since the Black Lips signed to Vice Records last year, part of their marketing push has been to put this notorious band of garage punks, known just as much for their onstage tomfoolery as their ramshackle take on the sounds of the Sixties, in strange settings and see what happens. They've been to Israel. They've been to India, and almost didn't make it back . And while Cleveland may not be the exotic locale on par with Jerusalem and Chennai, that didn't make last night's show at the Beachland Ballroom any less adventurous, [...]

With the close of 2008 fast approaching, I thought I'd add a little twist to the typical year end lists (which, by the way, is forthcoming from the good folks here at JamsBio) and give a run-down of 13 artists and bands that I feel deserve to have a breakout year in 2009. Some are familiar veterans who should be even better known, while others are rookies who who should be the next big thing or buzz band, as it were. I'd love to hear your picks for underappreciated artists due for a breakout in 2009, so [...]

Never has a musical retrospective been so obvious, and yet so good. Gentleman Jesse and His Men might as well be printing 1976 as the copyright date on their new, self-titled LP. This album is a huge tribute to the era of garage rock and proto-punk, but it's also a display of good songwriting and pop sensibilities, too. And don't assume this track, "Gentleman Jesse and His Men- "You Don't Have To (If You Don't Want To)," is the album's best moment. The whole LP is remarkably consistent in its charm and repeatability. For [...]
It's retro pop day here at Catbird HQ today, soundtracked in part by the splended s/t album from Gentleman Jesse & His Men , the best blatant 70's power pop copping since the beloved and tragic Exploding Hearts . ::: You Don't Have To (If You Don't Want To) ::: Also in rotation today is the new Stiff Records release from Wreckless Eric (" Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby "). Big thanks to Ben for sending that one over. ::: [...]
