It's a concept that began in France, today taking place in cities all over the world at different times throughout the year. From 7PM until 7AM, hundreds of performances, installations, and galleries pop up everywhere, from alleys to shopping malls to movie [...]

Rouge are an all-girl trio whose members include Kelly McMichael from Gentlemen Reg , Jess Tollefsen from Green Go and Emma Tollefsen. I just copied and pasted that line from a pr email, but really, it's a well formed introductory sentence. The group is part Guelph, part Toronto and all about dirty dance beats accompanied by disco inspired synth lines. Reminds me of a local version of defunct UK act Client . Modern Lovers I is a track off their debut 73 and is an extremely polished track that will light up some [...]
Toronto duo Light Fires are releasing their debut 7" tomorrow. The record consists of A-side "Ten Feet Tall", with "If You're Bored" on the flip. The group is comprised of the always off-kilter Gentleman Reg in his alter ego of Regina (he looks way less creepy in the brunette wig), and James Bunton of Ohbijou. Folks you buy the single through Bandcamp will receive an additional song "If We Get

The Lovely Bad Things - "Big Sur" I'm not saying this would ever happen, a lot of things would have to be just right in order for this to happen, but if a cat stole a megaphone and went to the roof of city hall to make demands, I think people would listen. The cat would say stuff like "down with currency, down with property" and outline its ideas about The Great Roam, a new paradigm of human interaction, based on nomadic traditions and something called "telenesting" a brand new way [...]

Anton Corbijn It only took about six minutes via Twitter to announce the forty albums long-listed for the sixth edition of the Polaris Music Prize , we'll have the next three weeks to argue over their relative merits and come July 6, when the ten record-strong short list is announced, another couple months to hash those out before the September 19 gala in Toronto when a yet-to-be-determined grand jury declares their pick for the best Canadian album of the past year. And there's more at stake this year than in the past, [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Chromewaves Gentleman Reg kicked off Canadian Music Week 's Canadian Music Fest with pride Wednesday night, giving festival-goers and fans in Toronto something to feast upon. "You're hungry?" Reg Vermue answered to a fan's exclamation. "I'm going to feed you!" Vermue, the Toronto-based melodramatic pop singer and half of dance band Light Fires, headlined the Proud FM showcase at [...]

jenngrant.com Just to be clear - Haligonian songstress Jenn Grant's upcoming Toronto show would have been pretty much a must-see regardless. Her latest album Honeymoon Punch is just about the record I've been hoping she'd make since she arrived with her debut Orchestra For The Moon in 2007. It sheds some of the overly tasteful production choices that held it and 20092s Echoes back and gets both breezy and scrappy, pushing the electric guitars up, and [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News There will be no shortage of acts to check out at this year's Canadian Music Fest, which takes place March 9-13 in Toronto as part of Canadian Music Week . Announced today, the stellar lineup includes Kurt Vile , Dinosaur Jr .'s J Mascis , Janelle Monáe, Melissa Etheridge and Good Charlotte . And, naturally, the Canadian contingent is top-tier, with performances by Shad [...]

Gentleman Reg & Buck 65 - Smalltown Boy [Bronski Beat] | zs

It was a busy fourth day at Pop Montreal. I started off the day checking out Puces Pop . Puces Pop is Montreal's largest do-it-yourself festival where people can come and celebrate all types of independent creation! All I can say was there was alot of people there. Interesting to see what unique stuff that comes out from it. Also it was the day I actually tried out the Bixi bikes . Those bikes are so fun! I went to the Notman House for the [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News For those who think that Toronto acts Gentleman Reg and Ohbijou are just indie pop and orchestra-driven folk acts, respectively, their new collaborative group Light Fires will surprise you. Light Fires is an electro-dance duo featuring the voice of Reg Vermue (Gentleman Reg) backed by beat-producing sidekick James Bunton (Ohbijou). What may come off as an unlikely venture proves to be something promising. Saturday night's performance at Pop Montreal was still among one [...]

I stumbled upon this band and track on an Arts and Crafts sampler. Like the label, the band is from Toronto. They're presumably named for frontman Reg Vermue. I think the thing I love most about this song is all that sassyness, combined with sax for max effect of course. I feel like I'm getting told and it feels...well...like I want to be told. It's also pitch perfect in the way it elicits a late-night rowdy dramatics--not that they're ever mentioned by name...but it's certainly what comes to mind for me. [...]

Frank Yang Though I'd seen Forest City Lovers a few times in the past year while their new record Carriage was being written, I can't say as though I remember (m)any of the new songs being aired out live before being committed to tape; perhaps all the more reason that I was bowled over by just how good the new album is when I finally got to hear the finished product a couple months ago. And that was also part [...]
It may sound a little hokey, but it's also true - I don't think we've ever heard anyone say a bad word about Sappyfest . I'm not sure if it's the setting, the people who run & support the fest, or the combination of musicians that come together for it, but everyone we've talked to about it was pretty darn near over the moon about the whole thing. I'm pretty sure it's a combination of those factors that make it such a great event, and I'm sure it's gotten much bigger than the organizers ever would have [...]
Happy long weekend, my fine countryfolk. With the coming of May 2-4, summer isn't far behind. So while you're taking it easy this weekend, may I offer some soundtrack/viewing suggestions to keep the good times rolling? First up- Stars have officially launched their new and improved internet home and have let Pitchfork stream the official radio single from forthcoming record The Five Ghosts . My take on "We Don't Want Your Body"? Well, why spoil a good mood right? I'll let you make the call yourself: [...]
Is it just me or our Friday Mixtapes getting better by the week? I mean, for example, this week features the likes of Delta Spirit, Underworld, Yo La Tengo, Menomena, Passion Pit, Cold Cave, Toro Y Moi, and MacGruber'er Kristen Wiig. It doesn't get much better than that! Ok, so maybe it does, but that's for another week to prove. In the meantime, enoy the mix below. As always, it includes the best new mix of singles, remixes, and covers, along with mp3s from some up-and-comers you might want to check out. NEW Singles: [...]
I watched this Gentleman Reg video a couple of times of his cover of Stevie Nicks' "Wild Heart." I like it. The video was shot in February in Toronto by director Colin Medley (Diamond Rings), and is a remake of Stevie's' video footage from a 1983 Rolling Stone photo shoot. Mick Rock For those of us who've become accustomed to the all-encompassing scale, splendour and chaos of that grandaddy of all club-level music festivals - that's SxSW , in case you were wondering - It can be kind of fun to pick on the Toronto versions CMW/CMF and NXNE for, essentially, not being South-by. It's not a fair comparison by any means, but it's inevitable. We've had to check those darts and break out some laurels in recent years, however, as both fests have made significant improvements in terms of organization, [...]

Chris Gergley One of my very favourite developments in the Toronto music scene over the past few years has been the rise of the in-store performance - whereas not so long ago there were maybe just a handful a year, they're now occurring all the time at most of the independent record stores in the city and featuring bigger and bigger acts. Not only is it giving fans the opportunity to see artists in an intimate setting, it's also often the only chance for underagers to see them live. And while I've often bemoaned the lack of a [...]
