Knotan With her 2005 (2006 in North America) debut Until Death Comes , Swedish songstress Frida Hyvonen established herself as a distinctive new voice, capable of veering from stark confessionals to demented whimsy at the drop of a hat. I base this as much on my recollections of her deliciously entertaining March 2007 performance at the Mod Club as I do from whatever impression the album itself made because, well, I no longer seem to have a copy of the album around to refer to. But [...]

Frank Yang The Dakota Tavern, a little subterranean rec room of a bar, has fried chicken. This is a very exciting fact to me, as I've been at a loss as to where to get non-gross, non-fast food fried chicken in this town. This assumes, of course, that the quality of foodstuffs there measure up to reputation the Tavern has as both a cool, rootsy watering hole and a friendly, intimate venue. It was these qualities that made it the perfect locale for a warm-up show in advance of the "Hurtin' And Flurtin' Tour" [...]

photo: Brendan Meadows Even though his character in John Cameron Mitchell's Shortbus claims to be an albino, Reg Vermue, aka Gentleman Reg , is not. Pale yes, but albino, no. A case for never judging a book by its cover, the songs of Gentleman Reg are far from pale and washed out. Having spent time working with the likes of The Hidden Cameras, Final Fantasy, Broken Social Scene and back-up work for Sufjan Stevens, certainly amounts to a veritable [...]
On October 20th, The Dears will unveil their new album, Missiles , on Dangerbird Records . Well, that's when the Montreal outfit will official do so. A number of impatient music fans choose to go the unofficial route however, choosing to download a leak of the band's fourth studio album nearly a month before they were actually supposed to. But rather than ignore this, The Dears have actually respond to the issue in a recent post on their MySpace . So there you have it, [...]

In an unprecedented move, Arts & Crafts has signed someone who is a member of a few of it's acts at various points in time, to make a solo record! I can't believe it either! This sort of cross-pollination is unheard of from the Canadian powerhouse label, so you can understand my shock at the news! Who is it this time? Why it's the albino gentleman pictured above, of course! Aka Gentleman Reg, aka Reg Vermue. [...]

So, I'm trying to figure out what to do tonight. There's a number of options, all appealing, and all conveniently (or inconveniently, depending on your point of view) located essentially on the same (large) city block. First off, and this is the one that's been on my calendar for a while so it's probably got the inside track, there's Vampire Weekend at the El Mocambo. If I were to be influenced by the local entertainment weeklies then this would be the one to see since both NOW [...]
Listen up! What Zach Condon did for Balkan gypsy in the field of indie music, so Patrick Cleandenim (Patrick Clendenin Roberts) will do for minor key swingin' orchestral sixties pop. Indie label Ba Da Bing shows us all they're the real deal by first snagging Condon and now Cleandenim. I've got to admit that the idea of reviving this musical era and style left me cold at first, but after a few more listens over the past couple of weeks I've begun to see the light. This guy is gonna bring back the sing-a-long in cars on the way [...]

Gentleman Reg probably won't need to lock his bike in friendly Wakefield on Friday. Text may or may not be filled in soon, enjoy the mp3s in the meantime. What shows are you set on seeing this week? M - 12.11.06 My Canvas * with Raein* and Susan File*, at Zaphod's W - 12.13.06 The Krugger Brothers with Casey Comeau & The Centretown Wilderness Club*, at Maverick's Malajube [...]

I'm so glad that Broken Social Scene introduced me to Gentleman Reg . But even so, I have time and again failed to give him enough attention. The truth is, his 2004 album, Darby and Joan , is really solid and deserved a lot more listens than I initially agreed to give it. For those that haven't seen Reg Vermue play with BSS , he sorta sings like a girl, but in a very Morrissey way. And while it might not be terribly masculine, it is incredibly infectious. Like head lice... but [...]
