We once asked the question, "What's the matter with Berkeley?" , attempting to figure out why the city of Berkeley lacks suitable rock venues. While this is still worthy of discussion, we can take comfort in the fact that the UC Berkeley campus fights the good fight by continuing to provide a fantastic setting for live music, open to anyone and everyone. Here's a list of upcoming shows at Cal (all shows are free and open to the public): Saturday, April 20th (Cal Day): The Antlers, 5:00pm, Memorial Glade [...]

Mixtape: Bay Area Artists, Remixing and Remixed (Podcast #304) All too frequently, remixes are just okay , but when they are great, they're really something special. A truly great remix can shed new light on the original artist's work and stand on its own as a unique creation. That's no easy feat, either, given the tension between staying true to an original song's components and a reworker's desire to create something new and personal. These days, it feels far too easy to get remix fatigue. Reworkings seem to pop up almost immediately after [...]
Last year's Orchard-IODA merger brought a veritable treasure trove of great new music into our system. We've had the very pleasurable opportunity to do a fair bit of exploration over the last 13 months and thought we might share a cross section of highlights. The following playlist includes household names to ...

This playlist has about as many mood swings as the characters in The Breakfast Club . Of course, they were high school students, so we can't necessarily hold it against them. But seriously, while listening to this playlist you might find yourself happy one second and a little contemplative the next. At one point, you might want to dance. Either way, i think you'll enjoy it. Thanks for listening.

Geographer is a locally grown band that we're always pleased to see on show bills and festival lineups around the Bay Area and beyond - but who ever imagined that we'd be seeing the band perform at the Gap? Yes, that big clothing store in the heart of downtown on Market and Powell. Filter magazine and Gap have teamed up to present a show deemed as a sort of SXSW pre-show - "an exclusive live performance celebrating SXSW". The two are combining fashion and music by bringing in local style blogger Erin Hagstrom (of Cali Vintage) to style Gap [...]

Kacey Johansing is back today with Grand Ghosts , her sophomore LP, blending styles of folk, pop and jazz into a mystical sound on par with My Brightest Diamond or St. Vincent. Moody and laid back, Johansing casts a dreamy haze throughout highlight song "Pinecone", sliding her vocals up and down to compliment a light, jazzy shuffle in backing instrumentation. There's a lot going on here. From an array of keyboard, synthesizer and xylophone features to Kacey's quite stunning vocal display. It continues with a haunting piano melody [...]
Closing out their first headlining tour, Geographer set their sold-out crowd into a trance at The Echo.

"I remember when we couldn't even get a show in this town...and now we're at the FUCKING Fillmore," proclaimed Geographer frontman/guitarist/synth-maste r Michael Deni last Thursday night, during a banter-break between floating falsettos and pulsing synths. This set the scene for the evening: Geographer hasn't played in their San Francisco home turf since October '12, so Deni, cellist/electro-tech Nathan Blaz, and drummer Brian Ostreicher were more than ready for a sold-out 1,200-person family reunion. Geographer's had about a year to let the bubbly, airy electro-pop tunes on their latest release, Myth , settle [...]

Photos and words by Brittany Kalaj Margulieux On the last night of its first headlining tour, Geographer brought. the. house. down. Michael Deni, Nathan Blaz, and Brian Ostreicher made music-love to the crowd so sweetly, so deeply, that I wouldn't be surprised if 72% of the ladies were pregnant upon leaving the show. Deni was constantly on and off stage, dancing and crowd surfing. The energy bounced back and forth from the stage to the floor to the stage to the floor for a consistent high-energy performance throughout, and ended with an all out dance party with [...]

GRAPHIC BY TERRA SCHNEIDER Well hey there, folks! I can't believe it's already February BUT I'm excited because that means I get to share a new mixtape with you all! This month's has a much different feel than the last couple mixes I've made. In light of the passion associated with Valentine's Day (and in a move to keep myself musically entertained), I wanted to make this mix really groovy, with lots of rhythms and not so many lyrics. Get ready to hear some trip-hop, glitch-hop, and chillwave - I've sort of been into "space [...]
Music in the key of February: ► Sonic explorer the Gaslamp Killer , along with Adventure Time (the collaboration between Daedelus and Mark "Frosty" McNeil of Dublab), is the big attraction at the February installment First Fridays at the Natural History Museum . "Seven Years of Bad Luck for Fun" (featuring Dimite), above, will mess with your brain. ► Tegan & Sara's sseventh album "Heartthrob" came out last week, as the sisters play Club Nokia with a supporting set from up-and-comers Night Terrors of 1927 . ► Malian [...]
We're smack dab in the middle of SF Sketchfest, which we're happy to call the Greatest Comedy Festival in America, and Dakin's running around laughing himself silly, so I'm taking over the task of recommending shows for those of you who love music but hate laughing. When I found out way back in November that Geographer was coming back to the city, I was over the moon. I had the pleasure of seeing them last March while they were opening for Miniature Tigers and knew firsthand how great they were in concert. So, when I got to Schubas , it felt a bit like coming home. The first band that came on was The Hudson Branch , which I found unimpressive. They were a four-man group who were trying too hard and not hard enough at the same [...]
