Tartufi Geographer Judgement Day

Every once in a while, we'll see a listing for a concert that makes us both excited and jealous. Excited because we like to attend can't-miss all-local-band shows, and jealous because we'll ask ourselves, "Why aren't we presenting that?" Well, this time, thankfully, we are. What you have below are three of the Bay's best indie acts, all headliners in their own right, teaming up for one great night of rock music. Bottom line: you'd be a sucker to miss this show. [...]

And you thought Outside Lands Festival was a shitshow for people that live in San Francisco. Wait until all the crazies and hippies descend on Golden Gate Park this weekend (October 2nd - 4th) for what may quite possibly be one of the best free concert festivals in the country. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is exactly how the title suggests, the bluegrass but in the mix you'll find Nick Lowe, MC Hammer, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Tom Morello, Steve Martin (Yes, THAT Steve Martin), Okkervil River, Old 97's, Emmylou Harris, Robyn Hitchcock, Billy Bragg, [...]

The band has a new 73 coming out later this year, but you should catch them this Sunday at 4pm at the Rock Make Street Festival . Fenny's got some more great videos coming in the future and we're [...]

[Locals Only is a regular feature where the Stranger Dance staff focus on the best and brightest of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. Feel free to hit us up with any information on local bands, musicians, shows, and other music-related events and projects.] The 2009 Rock Make Street Festival takes DIY to a new level, bringing music and art away from the exclusionary and back to the grassroots. Presented by the Bay Bridged , Tartufi , Whizbang Fabrics , and Noise Pop , the [...]
Two descriptive words that come to mind when I think of the Bay Area are the words 'vibrant' and 'upbeat'. I can't imagine there are many people who have ever visited here who would disagree with the assertion that the Bay Area is constantly pulsing with energy, optimism and creativity. Personally, as a transplant to San Francisco, and also as a well-seasoned traveler, I'm aware of few places in the word that are so progressive and so enthusiastically forward-looking. In part, it is probably for this reason that so many artists, musicians and culinary visionaries have historically chosen to call [...]
There's two parts to a great show - an awesome venue and awesome music. You'll find both of those tomorrow night when Geographer plays Cafe Du Nord . An East Coast transplant, frontman Mike Deni brings some eclectic indie rock sounds with an always-on pop sensibility. Similarly, I'd be depriving you if I made no mention of Nathan Blaz's always appropriate electric cello and the lone analog purest of the band (I've never seen him use a drum trigger of any sort), Brian Ostreicher on drums. Geographer [...]
I'm frequently reminded of just how lucky I am to live in the Bay Area. There is an endless supply of excellent restaurants and easy, cheap access to delicious fresh produce at the countless farmer's markets, grocers, and ethnic shops that fill every neighborhood in the city. Likewise, our music scene is full of history, diversity and is teeming with talent. Musical Pairings was conceived as a way to connect food with music, the way a sommelier would pair wine with a meal. Similarly, the "Local Pairings" portion of eating/SF began as a way to highlight some of eating/SF's best [...]
I needed the perfect restaurant for a last minute trip to the Healdsburg area for Kasey's birthday, and Farmhouse Inn & Restaurant was that perfect find. The food was simple, soothing and flavorful. The restaurant has been described by Bon Appetit magazine as a "clapboard house, tucked off a woodsy backroad." It should suffice to say it was extremely picturesque. And although I normally refrain from drawing comparisons between the local band and local restaurant paired in our "Local Pairings," in this instance, I can't restrain myself. This really feels like a natural pairing (if [...]

Picture from the HAD Archive As we've mentioned before, Clues is on tap to release their self titled first record May 19th on Constellation Records . As such, it seems that they've planned an early summer tour, covering both coasts and most of the South. For us San Franciscans, that means a stop at the Rickshaw Stop on June 4th. Frankly, we couldn't be more psyched. The band's show at Noise Pop was killer, and we're totally pumped [...]

Our friends over at Stranger Dance are hosting an awesome line-up with Geographer , Michael Zapruder and Harbours tonight at Cafe du Nord. It's almost like a Bay Area buzzfest if you ask me. All these acts have been making a name for themselves over the past year or so and seem to be getting more and more attention as of late. Whether it's with Geographer's recent album Innocent Ghosts ; which is a [...]

(Check out our recent interviews with both Geographer and Michael Zapruder to get excited.) As if that weren't enough, the hits keep coming, and our friends over at [...]
Our friends at Stranger Dance are presenting a terrific show at Cafe du Nord that features three of our favorite local acts - Geographer, Michael Zapruder, and Harbours.
San Francisco's Geographer have quickly become darlings of critics and Bay Area fans alike. Their debut album, Innocent Ghosts , garnered accolades from the likes of SF Chronicle, Performer Magazine and SPIN, who included them in their list of three undiscovered bands you need to hear now . You can catch Geographer live tomorrow night (4/23) at Cafe du Nord with Michael Zapruder and Harbours . We recently sat down with Mike Deni (vocals, guitar, bass, keys, synths) and Nate Blaz (cello, electronics) to talk [...]
