In celebration of our third annual Bay Area Takeover party this Thursday, March 18th at Austin's Beauty Bar , we're dedicating this week's podcast to music from all 15 bands that will be performing at the show. Whether you will be in Austin or not, these are all bands that play around the Bay regularly, and they're all well worth checking out. Also, Nicole and Anna took over hosting duties for this episode, so enjoy that change-up before our dour monotones return next week. The editors are all heading [...]
A band we've been crazy about for some time now hits Hollywood this evening for Keith's night at Cinespace - GEOGRAPHER . They're in town on their way to SXSW and are celebrating their recent EP release, ' Animal Shapes ' on Tricycle Records . Rumor has it that it's the special label ladies bday tonight and she'll be there drinking free vodka until 10:30pm and then champagne. Free alt=rss
Geographer - "Kites" Oh, Geographer . Truly one of our favorite local bands, and a group who seem to win new fans with every live performance. The band's new EP, Animal Shapes , is out now, and it really seems to pick up on the New Order vibe in the band's, well, New Order cover on their last 73. The acoustic piece of the trio's electroacoustic balance is there, but it really feels like the band has honed its use of synths as a foil to Mike [...]
Atlas Sound, via sfweekly.com Not a huge fan of Deerhunter, but from the moment I first heard Atlas Sound , solo project of Deerhunter's frontman Bradford Cox, it's been in constant rotation on my "Dekan" playlist (naked backwards so no visitors who want to play DJ on my macbook think I'm a pervert). Take a listen; trust me, it's good for that stuff. Anyhow, I caught him and three other bands I've never heard of at the Great American last Friday. Of the three opening bands, I've [...]
Photos by: Nicole Browner As Noise Pop 2010 entered its closing weekend, packing or selling out many high profile venues in the city, badge holders, photographers, and various press folk were confronted with all kinds of competing choices. Friday and Saturday's lineups featured a smattering of sterling singer songwriters ( John Vanderlice , Mirah / Thao , Laura Gibson , Mark Kozelek ), including a murkier permutation of this breed in Atlas Sound , the solo project of Deerhunter's Bradford Cox. From traveling street performers to the hell that is major label limbo, PDP have seen the music world as a whole and have emerged wiser and more talented than ever. Impossible to pick one genre, or even three to classify the band, PDP make gypsy soul music that is heartfelt and uplifting. In addition, singer/guitarist Frank Orrall is also a touring member [...]

Photos by: Charlie Homo It's been a long seven weeks for Port O'Brien . They've been on tour all over the country, had their van broken into, and had some equipment stolen. Geographer - "Can't You Wait" (Official Video)
In the last year and a half I have received countless albums, submissions, pitches, but I have never been blown away by a band completely unbeknownst to me, until now. Geographer, a Bay Area local band (hell yeah! I will be at everyone of their shows, obsessing over them like Eve Marcellus does with Lady Gaga --though she'll only admit that half grudgingly) are incredible. Like Grizzly Bear "Cant You Wait" is charged with vocal harmonies. Their music has the infectious bounce that makes me love... Read more at www.SFCritic.com

Geographer's 'Animal Shapes' A Perfect Fit
