By Stef Siepel April 05, 2013 The Weekly Froth! A weekly take on six tracks, most of which have recently popped up somewhere in the blogosphere. Bit of a mixed bag with a slight leaning towards house, disco, and remixes, but generally just anything that for some reason tickled the writer’s fancy. Track of the week: ‘International’ (Brother J Disco Dub) (Superbreak) I’m kind of hesitant about something being called a Disco Dub, because for me [...]

"Turn Around" by Buffalo NY duo Solidisco is Nu-disco done to its highest level. Sampling from the great George Benson's 1981 track "Turn Your Love Around", Solidisco does an excellent job modernizing (and we mean that in the best possible way) the jazz & B classic. Solidisco - Turn Around Solidisco ( Soundcloud(/a>) Rating 8.3
The duo behind the buttery house track "Set Me Free" are back again to give listeners another infectious beat dripping with disco flavor. This time, Solidisco captures classic 80s vibes with a vocal sample from George Benson's "Turn Your Love Around" to form their own funky rendition entitled "Turn Around." The track, which was released as a free download today, rewinds time with an energized line layered with jazzy piano chords and escalating horns. Solidisco seem to have the perfect mix of ingredients to give disco house a revival and "Turn Around" follows an [...]

Deen was and is advanced. I still remember the first time someone asked what kind of music I listened to. I wasn't quite as much of a music nerd as I am now (I was about 8 or 9), but I already had a pretty cool answer for my age: "all kinds of stuff - you know, like Sade, Whodini and George Benson." My interrogator happened to be one of my dad's friends and he damn near lost his mind when I mentioned the last name. I thought I was so damned cool because he [...]

George Benson is one smooth cat. This was apparent the moment he started playing his brand of soul jazz at Nathan Phillips. The venue was packed inside and out with die hard fans who have been listening to him for decades. It was funky all ages fun for the whole family. His guitar work is legendary. He evokes guitarist Wes Montgomery with his brand of approachable smooth jazz. I hate using that term because smooth jazz conjures up ideas of flat and uninteresting elevator Muzak. Benson can make soulfully smooth sounds, but he can also play with [...]

Another summer is in full swing and that means festival season! The Toronto Jazz Festival is almost upon us, and this year marks the return of the main stage to Nathan Phillips Square' renovated digs. I haven't had a chance to check out the renovation, but my understanding is that it's pretty awesome. More greenery, multiple viewing balconies, the flame in the Peace Garden will now burn 20 feet high, and free hoverboards are available to cross that pesky fountain! A welcome upgrade to the grey slabs of concrete, no doubt. It's time to [...]
Forgive me the moderate delay in posting a mix for this month, and just know that the delay is solely due to indecision rather than procrastination. Not sure if others will identify with these tracks as much as I do - many are familiar to me after use as hip-hop samples, and a good deal of credit for the selections should go to Hip Hop Is Read and This Is Hip Hop for the coursework. I don't think I've posted any of these artists on any other mixes, but then again, I don't think I've had [...]

With a smooth vocal and sexy instrumentation there's no denying George Benson 's Give Me The Night is a stone cold classic! It's no secret we love a re-edit of a classic here on Hard Candy, so it's therefore our pleasure to present a fine one provided by Chrome Canyon ! This doesn't stray too far from the original but there are just enough tweaks to make it interesting. It's the perfect tune to groove to on an otherwise fairly dull [...]

It was in a place called The Video Café in London’s West End that I first became aware of Whitney Houston. In 1985 the concept of a restaurant playing video promos of pop music on big screens was still so novel as to present a special gastronomic experience. So I heard, and saw, Whitney singing How Will I Know there. She wouldn’t bother the British charts for another few months when she topped the charts with her cover of Marilyn McCoo’s Saving All My Love. We know the [...]
