The highlight for this week is The Tide Will Swallow Us Whole , the debut album from former Haste The Day vocalist Jimmy's new band Trenches . It's well worth picking up. Aside from that, there are live releases from Avenged Sevenfold and Unwritten Law and new stuff from Jonezetta , All That Remains , Hootie and the Blowfish's Darius Rucker (whaaaaaat?) and Portugal, the Man . :: Adventure , Adventure (Carpark) :: Alexander Tucker , Portal [...]

It's that time of the year again, and as people get their wellies out for electric picnic egoeccentric compiles a guide to our must-see acts. With a line-up drastically removed from the likes of Oxegen, there's always plenty of gems at the Picnic, and many of them are acts most folk never heard of before. This is the beauty of Electric Picnic- think of it as a live mixtape made by someone with impeccable (if mildly insane) taste. Read on for the guide… Digitalism [...]

This one's a special dedication to Mrs. Vegetables. We have many "our songs," but this one's a classic. I know that Parliament/Funkadelic gets a lot of props, but still I just don't think it's enough . Shouldn't people be shouting about them from the rooftops every single day? I feel almost the same way about Prince. Don't people need to just stop what they're doing for a while to contemplate and appreciate the level of talent, crackpottery, innovation, and stone-col' FONK? Parliament - Testify from Get Up [...]
George Clinton and His Gangsters of Love , reimaginings of some of his classics, will be out in sooner than a month. In the song below, his 'Gangsters' include Sly Stone and El Debarge. Yes, that El Debarge (is there another?). Other 'Gangsters' include Rza (true), Carlos Santana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and some of the old P-Funk gang. George Clinton and His Gangsters Of Love - Ain't That Peculiar (mp3)
New music from George Clinton, this one featuring Sly Stone and El Debarge..."Ain't That Peculiar" comes from Clinton's forthcoming project, George Clinton and His Gangsters of Love , which is set to be released on September 16th. The new project sees Clinton go back to his early crooning days and re-up on some old classics. From Clinton: "I didn't want the record to be 'nostalgic,'" he states. "I wanted to merge the old school with the new school. Some of the kids didn't even know the original songs, so they did them their own way." [...]
on sunday, july 20th i FELT THE FUNK! it was my 4th time experiencing the awesome power of a P-Funk Party!! and it was indeed a funkin' good time seeing George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic ( allmusic / wiki / Rock HoF ) with my pal Prophit. we have seen the P-funk crew in concert several times together starting with Lollapalooza back in 1991. this time it was in Winston-Salem, North

GMS takes a break from dexys week to point you in the direction of this excellent observer article on british protest music and the anti-nuclear campaign - featuring, among others, michael foot, tony benn, peggy seeger, billy bragg and GMS-favourite Martin Carthy . CND is fifty this year, and this weekend sees the anniversary of the nagasaki bombing. music, maestro: uncle tupelo - 'atomic power' (louvin brothers cover, live, 1992) yo la [...]

I downloaded this new Computer Club reflip of the Prince classic, Erotic City , over at Missingtoof today. I really don't hear much of a difference between the Computer Club version and the original but I'm not complaining. When I first discovered Erotic City last year (don't ask me why it took so long), the original and the George Clinton version stayed on repeat on my mp3 player for about a month. Released on the B-side to the 1984 single Let's Go Crazy (people actually bought singles, ha!), [...]

we always talk about artists who we believe are inspired by prince, but less so on who originally inspired his purpleness. prince has pretty much created a recognisable sound of his own but there are elements of many artists of the 60s and 70s. we don't need an excuse to post about prince here at dirtymartini: a post of prince duets , featuring beyonce, angie stone, madonna to name a few a post of [...]

- Covers for your great Weekend - Mentre il primo "Please, Cover Me" spiegava cosa fosse una cover e dove nascesse questa terminologia, questo e i prossimi appuntamenti daranno spazio alle cover più interessanti che girano all'interno del nostro programma radiofonico, recuperate qua e là, fra ragnatele e polvere, negli scatoloni dei 33 giri dimenticati, nelle borse dei dischi o semplicemente girovagando per il web. sup, holmes? or is it homes? ok this is going to be the last redesign for a long time, cause i actually am purchasing this one. so, i will feel more or less attached to it or i guess more or less attached to not wanting to feel like i am wasting money - which i am actually pretty damn good at. thoughts? i dig it, but what say you? hey, dr pepper wants to give everyone in the good ol u s of a free can of their good stuff. the only caveat is that [...]

FYI - Sadie Hawkins Day is NOT February 29 , so all the bachelors out there should be safe for a while longer. TGIF - Today's selections bring some eighties synthpop , the amazing bluesman Henry Thomas and his quills ( this site explains why it sounds so pleasing), late Dance Hall queen Natasja Saad , James Brown, live at the Olympia, Paris, 1971, with two drummers, a teenage Bootsy Collins and his best horn section ever, finalizing with the Clinton that *did* inhale - I don't think he ever [...]

Some statements sound plain weird. 'Malaysia's premiere music festival' would be one of those phrases, right up there with 'Pantsy's smallest bicep', or 'Pantsy's finest body part'. Like, ain't redundancy just so irritatingly, annoyingly, gallingly pissing off? Sheesh. But ah well. When short on options... Malaysia's premiere music festival, Sunburst KL International Music Festival, has released their timetable. Come March 15th, in the grand tradition of festivals that are bound to frustrate with a slew of clashing acts, attendees will be forced to choose between: George Clinton, Bittersweet and Love Me Butch [...]
George Clinton aka Dr. Funkenstein, aka The Prime Minister Of Funk, aka The Interplanetary Master Of Funkmanship. Call him what you want so long as you say it with respect. As the creator of a very special and unique brand of funk, George Clinton's stamp on both past and present rock 'n' roll and hip-hop is indisputable. His work with the groups Funkadelic and Parliament have transcended all things groove within a rock medium, yielding a laundry list of super hits and making him one of the most sampled artists in musical history, second only [...]

Moving to a new place has had me reaching for the classics. Here's the final #1 song for George Clinton's P-Funk, "Atomic Dog." Though it's far from the most recognizable track of the Clinton catalog, "Atomic Dog" remains in the cultural consciousness as a result of Dr. Dre's repeated sampling of a couple of the song's many hooks to introduce his "homey Doggy Dogg" on The Chronic. What you perhaps did not notice is that another phrase in the song – "Why must I feel like that? / Why must I chase the cat? [...]
