Potholes Music's own AbJo is the latest artist to put together a guest podcast and to call it a must-download for hip-hop fans would be an understatement. His mix is essential for music lovers across the board, particularly those with a penchant for jazz and funk. There is plenty of hip-hop on here, too, from the likes of J Dilla , Hodgy Beats , Madlib , and, of course, AbJo himself. You'll also find cuts from other Potholes favorites like Thundercat and Nujabes (R.I.P.) across this majestic podcast that really puts [...]

George Duke - My Soul - The Complete MPS Fusion Recordings (2008) (4 CD BoxSet) Genre: Jazz | Label: MPS Records | 4CD | MP3 VBR kbps | 413 MB

It began with Miles Davis and broke down with Kenny G. Jazz Fusion, and the various guises in which it revealed itself, began with the experimental fusion of jazz and rock of Davis' 1968 album Miles In The Sky . The likes of John McLoughlin, Herbie Hancock, Al Di Meola, Chick Corea, Bob James and so on continued in that avant garde vein. But other, more funk and soul oriented musicians, emerged in the 1970s, and many of the avant garde crowd also contributed to the rise of the more accessible form of fusion, the kind that would be [...]

If you perhaps overlooked this great edit from Zimmer , we've got your back. This tropical, latin-flavored disco cut gets a fresh update that's really great for sipping mojitos on the beach. Listen and download for free below and take a top-down drive along Brazil's coast.

I posted this piece on November 24 last year. I re-post it now as a tribute to Don Cornelius, who died, apparently by his own hand, at the age of 75 today, February 1. Don Cornelius was the father of my favourite sub-genre of music, early 1970s soul. With this, I salute him. If you say Soul Train , Americans of a certain generation and fans of soul and funk anywhere will think of funky [...]
Writing about the first album I ever bought with my own money (Zappa/Beefheart's Bongo Fury) set off a huge Frank Zappa LP listening frenzy that is still on-going. And the one that's been getting daily spins is Roxy & Elsewhere , a (surprise, surprise) double live album from 1974. In Zappa's huge and diverse discography, this is often mentioned as a real highlight and I'm inclined to agree that it is one of his best. The band he had at this time and their repertoire successfully combines rock, jazz and classical extremely well and is a great [...]

This Nelue rework of George Duke's "Reach Out" is a banger! How can you resist getting down to this. Out now on Juno download.

If you say Soul Train , Americans of a certain generation and fans of soul and funk anywhere will think of funky dancers with big 'fros and hot threads, Don Cornelius' flamboyantly fashionable suits and baritone voice, the animated train, hair care products ads, scrambleboards, awkward audience questions, cool catchphrases and great music. You could bet your last dollar, it was gonna be a stone gas, honey. Soul Train 's cultural impact was tremendous. The first nationally syndicated black music show, it was owned by a black man (presenter Cornelius), staffed mostly by black people, [...]

Broadcasting late on a " Throwback Tuesday " night from the HCM cave, we bring you all "Digital Love", from the French house/electronic music gods, Daft Punk . Released in March 2001 as the third single off of Discovery , "Digital Love" parted seas en route to the U.S. where it definitely made more than just a splash. The song features a sample of "I Love You More" by George Duke and as part of the album, the song is featured in the film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem . [...]

The term "Horizontal Disco" is a novel one to me. It's fresh, funky and open to interpretation. I, for one, sometimes also like to go vertical when I disco. Zimmer's sound, also described as "Elegant Funk," hits all the right spots at all the right times. The smooth disco brings thoughts of a nice Rosay in a cafe on the Champs Eylsees or a sideways-esque bender through Napa valley to one's mind. Soothing yet rollicking. Zimmer , not to be confused with Hans, is the most [...]
Thundercat's debut full-length is a fantastically modernized tribute to the strain of jazz fusion that was coming out in the late 70s and early 80s. From George Duke to Jaco Pastorious, some of the genre's best and brightest musicians maintain a legacy through albums like this. Though I was a little disappointed by the overall length of some of these tracks-c'mon, two minutes-the style, musicianship, and production are all great enough to keep me coming back to this release again and again. It has been two and a half years since I last posted a Any Major Funk mix. Most of the tracks contained in this, the sixth volume, have been languishing in the shortlist folder since then. So here are 16 more songs from the great era of dance music, stretching from 1977 to 1983. While I'm at it, I have updated the expired links for the first five volumes. Michael Henderson has played with the greats. Having moved to Detroit as a child, he was only 13-14 years old when he [...]

George Duke. All-time great afro. All-time great musician. Check the resume: conservatory trained trombonist and composer. Jazz fusionist who played with Cannonhall Adderley before linking up with Frank Zappa and playing on 200 Motels and other odd Me Decade experiments. Later collaborators included Miles Davis, Milton Nascimento, and Sheila E. Sampled by Daft Punk, Mylo, Kanye, Doom, Cube, and Spice 1. Most recently, his work re-emerged in connection with Thundercat's "For Love I Come," a Duke original. In the interest of the common good, the great B+ has made a mix for Mochilla and [...]
