Thursday's toil and trouble: ► L.A. four-piece Vintage Trouble spent much of 2011 thrilling audiences in the U.K., where their retro rock 'n' soul transported Jools Holland fans back to the '50s and '60s , they opened for Bon Jovi and they earned reviews comparing singer Ty Taylor to a young James Brown. They bring their hip-shaking fury back home tonight, playing a sold-out show at the Troubadour. ► Summer Darling heads up a diverse bill at the Echo that includes Birds & Batteries , the Hunting Accident [...]

Won't you please come meet me in Los Angeles. George Stanford - Meet Me in LA Purchase / Info Rating: 8.2
We first came across George Stanford a few years with the release of his Mercury full-length debut Big Drop and catching a live show or two in the Philly clubs. Soulful folk/pop was the order of the day for Stanford, a performer who could bring both passion and energy to the stage along with a slew of fine, eminently catchy songs. But it was his self-released five-track EP Roll Away last spring that made us really sit up and pay attention, a short, diverse set that swung easily from acoustic gems to more filled-out [...]

It's months like this that I'm really thankful for all the excellent music blogs out there that keep me well-stocked with new and interesting things. From Slowcoustic to The Yellow Stereo , Stereogum to Gorilla vs. Bear , I really am spoiled for choice. I'm also still digging my way through those excellent shows over at KEXP and Wolfgang's Concert Vault . All in all, it's been a great couple of weeks for music! And so, in this slightly shorter edition of "Now Playing," I'll pass on some of the great [...]

Philly singer-songwriter George Stanford is back with a new EP called Roll Away that is every bit as good as his debut album, Big Drop. Even though George has been living in LA since 2007 his roots are still pretty deep in Philly. After he left the band Townhall for his solo career he moved to LA was signed to Mercury records. Stanford's soulful voice and great sense of melody are excellently showcased on his new EP. Here's a new song that features singer-songwriter Lissie [...]

We're already nearing the close of 2008, which means nerds and obsessives like yours truly are thinking about what we're going to include on our year-end best-of lists. While my list of top songs isn't yet ready for public consumption, I thought I'd share some songs that will likely make my final cut, but haven't really been widespread hits. The playlist below includes some of my favorite underexposed 2008 gems: None of these folks are wildly obscure, but you can hear more from these artists at their respective MySpace pages, which [...]

This has been a shit week. I really didn't get through all my emails, newsfeeds, etc to listen to new music this week, and I don't really care to. So, you're getting a best-of mixtape sorta. It's basically the mix of some favorites from the past several months that haphazardly scobbled together. Download, listen, comment- or don't. I really don't care. Tracklisting: Cloud Cult - Pretty Voice Duffy - Warwick Avenue George Stanford [...]

Welcome to 2008 everyone! I trust you all enjoyed yourselves in moderation and with safety first in mind over the holiday this week... Starting off the new year with new music is a great idea! I'm glad I thought of it. I've very cleverly pre-chosen the cover image for this week's Friday Mixtape to link with last week's close-up of crayons, to add significance to the visual aspect of my weekly project as it heads into it's third year. First off, if you're in ATL, my friend Berg is playing at East Andrews in [...]

Ah, the last day of 2007. We have about four different options for this evening and no one can decide anything. Both my brother and sister are still in town, which adds to the fun myriad of possibilities. Right now I think the frontrunners are either going to Heidi's to drink hot German wine (she just got back from a trip to the Paterland), doing something in Denver with my little brother, or perhaps just the usual NYE tradition of sitting on my porch with that bottle of vodka and a shotgun. Also, in related holiday news, my [...]
