Over the holidays, we're looking back at some classic Christmas albums taking some track by track and just digging on others. It doesn't happen often, but every once in a while, a record or arti... Continue reading "Classic Christmas: George Winston's December" >
Banner Designed by Cysquatch Welcome to "Question of the Week," a (not really at all) weekly debate amongst the MetalSucks staff regarding a recent hot button issue. Inspired by the ongoing disaster that is Lou Reed & Metallica's Lulu, this week we asked our writers: BESIDES METALLICA AND LOU REED, WHAT IS THE WORST COLLABORATION [...]
George Winston : Riders on the Storm [ purchase ] Sometimes a real genre-shift is all another artist needs to make their music sound shiny and new. In 2002 George Winston, contemporary pianist and mainstay of the Windham Hill label, took 13 songs by the Doors and transformed them to introspective and melodic solo piano songs. It took me a while to choose one because I really love the whole album, but I went with one of my favorite Doors tunes. This week is hard for me [...]
Here's something I originally posted about 2 years ago, but felt it relevant to this time of year. I absolutely love this album and have been listening to it lately, so if you don't know about it yet, I highly encourage you to read on!...
Done up in German backdrop, "Thanksgiving" is one of my favorite autumn instrumental classics. http://www.georgewinston.com

It's almost that time of year again... that's right, Thanksgiving is just around the corner with the rest of the holiday season following hot on its heels. It's good to be back to regular posts just in time for the holidays. Food, family, friends, and drinks. So, last year I posted an awesome roast turkey recipe , and this year I wanted to post my mom's vegan pumpkin pie recipe, but I have no idea where it is. So here is one of my other favorite pie recipes (courtesy of my mother)... and some songs. Heck, [...]

Like most people, my introduction to the Windham Hill label was through the massively successful album December , by the pianist George Winston . One Christmas, it just seemed to be everywhere - on the radio, and playing in every store and café you went into during the holiday season. Fortunately, it's a really pleasant album. I bought it. (Though I hid it from most of my friends, as our musical tastes during that period ran more to The Clash and Elvis Costello than warm, fuzzy, feel good [...]

I remember how special Sunday mornings were in my household. My dad would have one of us kids bring in the newspaper and we'd divide it up: my dad would get the main section, my oldest brother would get sports, my second oldest would get the entertainment, and I would reach for the comics. My mom was always so disappointed because I wanted the part of the newspaper that was the "least educated..." I"m glad she never saw me salivate over the coupon section. Anyhow, the first comic read was always [...]
George Winston has once again proven that tickling the ivories can be expressive, jazzy, and sentimental without selling your soul.

Filed under: All About Jazz Christmas music is as much a part of the holiday season for many of us as the decorations, trees and presents. It comes in two forms for the most part: the stuff that is played every year at home, and the stuff that provides forced ambiance of cheer that can seem way too ubiquitous from Halloween to New Year's. Of course, tastes vary, and one family's classic can be another's atrocity. Jazz is rife with Christmas music of both varieties. A stone cold classic for [...]

With Thanksgiving now less than two weeks away, I figured it was about time to repost my tried and true recipe for brined and roasted turkey. So what if I ganked the original recipe from the amazing Alton Brown a few years ago. I've made enough delicious changes that it really feels like mine though. I'm still thinking about the possibility of cooking something else a little less traditional for Thanksgiving... something like a Bacon Explosion perhaps. (Yum!) And my mother's vegan pumpkin pie to balance it all out. Oh yeah! Here's the recipe: [...]
George Winston: Linus and Lucy Vince Guaraldi: Linus and Lucy [purchase] From the incomparable library of Vince Guaraldi classics, this is Linus & Lucy. I distinctly remember standing in church once at about the age of 10 when a certain 15-16 year old kid walked up to the church piano, sat down and played this song note for note, including the funky jazz refrains in the middle sections. At the [...]
While I was researching the Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits part of the last In The Bins , I was exchanging e-mails with Derrick Bang who among other things is an uber-collector of Peanuts and is part-time curator of the fivecentsplease.org website that is essential to Peanuts collectors with its wealth of information. Derrick pointed out that George Winston - who himself is a collector of Vince Guaraldi - is going to release a second volume to his critically-acclaimed 1996 release Linus & Lucy - The Music of Vince Guaraldi titled [...]

I know that I've mainly focused on rock music here on TheFrontloader.com, but since it's the Christmas season, I thought for this week's "Spin of the Week," I'd throw this one in for you to check out. George Winston's December is a classic within the "New Age" genre. According to Wikipedia, "New Age" [...]

May your day be warm, safe and shared with friends and family. Thanksgiving
Yes, this is a recipe for brined and roasted turkey with a musical accompaniment, but I'd rather call it Can You Eat the Turkey From the Southside? Seriously folks, Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away. So I've had deep-fried turkey (good), smoked turkey (even better), but my favorite way to cook a turkey for Thanksgiving (or even Christmas) is brined and roasted. Yes, I'll admit that I ganked the original recipe from the amazing Alton Brown a few years ago, but I've made some minor (and delicious) changes. Here's the recipe: [...]
