A year end albums list is kind of a strange thing, especially when it's one person compiling it. Since this blog is a committe of one, it can become quite capricious. In all likelyhood I wrote about some records this past year that I was overtly enthusiastic about at the time. Now the end of the year rolls around and some of those records are not on the list. "What gives?" you might ask. It's hard to remember which label flew me to Tahiti and which one comp'd my CMJ this year, so I may have forgotten to include a [...]
It's been a banner year for Hardly Art. Seemingly back-to-back-to-back-to-back fantastic albums filled out a year capped of by the Gem Club album Breakers, a truly somber bit of orchestration. To celebrate the festive days cluttering up the calender before the inevitable turn towards 2012, the good folk at Hardly Art sent over a list [...]

A German Joke Is No Laughing Matter German Measles knock out 12 songs of sloppy punk-pop ("sloppy" is here used as a complement) in just 26 minutes. Recorded by Gary Olsen, their shambolic (also a complement) 3-chord songs are quick and catchy and reminiscent of the Television Personalities. The record is studded with good tunes but Side Two is the knockout. 'I Want You' is Troggs-like punk pop with a sneer while 'Color [...]

We already know how great Psych Fest is going to be, but we also realize that it might not be everyone's cup of tea. Luckily for us all, there's a ton of shows going on this weekend for you to catch, so we drew out some of our highlights. There's several strong local shows featuring friends TV Torso and Great Nostalgic , and some punk rock to boot. Read more for a nice list, and some songs. [...]

German Measles come off like a ramshackle party band live, and on record they...come off like a ramshackle party band. Singer Nik Curtin has a flat dry delivery that kind of reminds of Mark E Smith, though he's nowhere near as tone deaf. Formerly known as the Japanese Beetles, the band changed their name to German Measles after a heckler at a show came up with it. The band have put out an EP on Captured Tracks and a single on Wild World and are set to release their first long player on brand new label Krazy Punx [...]

Yesterday we brought you a little bit of punk rock from the up-and-coming label Krazy Punx , and we've got yet another exciting band from the label to hit you with. This time up, we've got NY's German Measles . This single is definitely worthy of sing-a-long moments, not to mention the rest of their new LP, A German Joke is No Laughing Matter . I've had a blast listening to this record all weekend, just bopping along, making sure I knew I could sing [...]

photos by Andrew St. Clair Beets fans? (@ Don Hill's) As Bill pointed out , " The Beets kick off their winter tour at 285 Kent, with German Measles, Beach Arabs and Big Troubles. Their second LP, Stay Home , came out last month on Captured Tracks and is quite good and a slight step up the fidelity ladder from their debut." That tour-kickoff show happens tonight (2/17). The poster for it, [...]

We've made to the fat on top, or the fruit at the bottom, in other words the top ten…I bought way too many seven inch singles this year. I'm not trying to brag. It's a problem really. The seven inch is like crack to the record geek, a fleeting moment of pop perfection and then it's off to either flip the record or put on another one. This was a daunting task this year and I feel like I left out a lot of stuff, but a top 60 would have been too much and limiting it to 40 makes [...]

The Beets are always a good time. There's a few you're guaranteed any time the Beets come back to town. Truly delightful jangly songs. A high-energy performance. A whole bunch of their friends who are going to come and be a little drunk and make sure that everyone's having fun. I've never been to a Beets show with bad vibes, and would expect this to be no different. German Measles are also playing. German Measles are an objectively bad band. Their songs sound like songs you would write if I handed you a guitar for the first time right now [...]

It's been hot, it's been sweaty, every band in the world is on tour, and I just got air conditioning for the first time in my adult life (so not punk). I guess that means it's summer, the best time ever to be young and free in New York City. Time to go to Rockaway Beach to look at the surfers and/or Coney Island to eat some Nathan's and pretend you're in some Neil Simon play. Most importantly, it's time to party party party party party! Well, that's the theme of this week's ...

The Beets, German Measles & Coconut Coolouts at the Funhouse, Seattle | 30 April 2010 New York's ramshackle, frumpy party scene visited the Funhouse on Friday night for some debauchery, good times and music. Seattle's Coconut Coolouts played hosts, opening the night with their version Pacific Northwest garage party rock. The Coolouts have boiled party rock down to a science of two stand-up drummers, Bruno Kirby on keyboards, a primal stomp and some well chosen covers. It seems [...]

This show is part of the same Beets/Christmas Island/Beach Fossils tour that I blogged a whole bunch about last week. Except this time they're playing at a much bigger venue with the addition of German Measles and Crystal Stilts, two very good additions if you ask me. If you caught this show last time around, I'd probably suggest sitting this one out in favor of other Saturday night pursuits. But if you missed it, all of these bands are a whole lot of fun. Monday: Babies, German Measles, + Nude Beach @ Death By Audio 8pm $tba [ info ] If you're anything like me you have spent the last few weeks spending a lot of time with family and friends trying to make the most of the holiday season, and at this point you're probably sick and tired of those people and just want to disappear into a dark hole somewhere that there's some good tunes. Tonight get back into the habit of show going with a stacked lineup celebrating the release of the Babies new record. [...]

In these wintry economic times, everyone can appreciate a bargain, especially a delicious one. On German Measles ' debut EP, the Brooklyn band sing the praises of five-dumplings-for-a-dollar joint Fried Dumping . "There's a groovy place where you can always go, just gather up your change and head to Mosco!" A band who for a long time seemed to exist mainly to get f-ed up on stage have straightened up lately, to the point that I'd actually call them competent. Enjoyable even.Their recordings are the lowest of fi, but have a sort of sloppy [...]
