photo taken from Aberdeen show flyer So upcoming concert possibility is Ghost Bees and Laura Barrett here in Calgary on December 4th. I am still up in the air on participating so I am putting up a couple of tracks to see if you can convince me that I will be missing something by not heading into the dark and possibly snowy evening. I am not exactly sure who is opening for who, but I think Laura Barrett is the headline with [...]

I'm going to level with you, readers: a monster has been eating my blog. I envision it a lot like the one above, kind of bored, mindlessly chomping away, and completely unresponsive to discussion. It's been devouring chunks when I'm not looking. While I'm trying to have a sense of humor about the situation, it really isn't very funny. In the past week, six of our posts have been deleted by Blogger, none with any prior notification, and only two with notification after the fact. I know which ones four of the poofed posts are, but I [...]

myspace Last Tuesday showed Gus' Pub playing host to another terrific lineup. Katie Stelmanis and Emma McKenna both took the time to entertain the crowd, but for me, the reason for being there was to finally see Ghost Bees perform. I've been trying to get people to pay attention to the twins from Halifax for a long time , but because of the move from Vancouver, I've actually missed their last three shows (both in Halifax and the Couve) because I was moving. [...]

You see those happy, screaming, culturally diverse people of various ages having the time of their lives? THAT COULD BE YOU! Obviously I'm kidding, but this week is the best week I can remember for the Halifax indie scene. I know you might be skeptical and accuse me of blogger hyberbole, but the amount of shows and artists shuffling around the city before Sappyfest this weekend is pretty impressive and a few people decided to make the jaunt to Halifax before heading to Sackville. I mean, just look at these shows: [...]
Lately I've been waking up in the middle of the night for no reason and just lying there kind of 3/4ths of the way asleep. Maybe an hour later I finally fall asleep. This is wreaking havoc with my gym-going as you can imagine (I go at 5am) but it does lead to some weird half-asleep thoughts. Sometimes I even think I'm awake but later I will realize I wasn't really. Perhaps sometimes I will find myself standing on top of the Hollywood sign in my pajamas. Ghost Bees is the music [...]
It's Canada's birthday today . Did you get the Great White North something special you file sharing ingrates? I keed, I keed, but it's only been a mere 141 years since the nation known for hockey, Molson, Rush and other things I can't really stand was started. I'll be out BBQ-ing and drinking beers, but I wanted to give you a few great musical reasons that make Canada special. So without further ado: Miracle Fortress - Digital Love (Daft Punk cover) Graham's Five Roses was an absolute stunner [...]

The Awkward Stage / Slimming Mirrors, Flattering Lights ( Mint ) On The Awkward Stage's debut Heaven Is For Lonely Girls , Shane Nelken's wry, sardonic lyricism was perfectly matched to archly orchestral arrangements that served to deliver their barbed and frequently hilarious sentiments in that much more pointed fashion. With the follow-up, he's chosen to take a more guitar rock approach, maintaining the meticulous production aesthetic but adding considerably more muscle to the sound. In doing so, he's proven [...]

Ghost Bees is a band who's songs I have been hoarding for quite some time and have really come to love. The twins, Romy and Sara Lightman, voices though sharp and distinct, harmonize beautifully to project the fantastic imagery of their great-grand mothers dark past. When the two bards were asked " Your album reminds me a lot of Joanna Newsom's fantastical, imagery-laden songs. Who would you say your influences are? ", by exclaim.ca, they answered: " We've been getting a lot of those comparisons. Obviously what Joanna Newsom does in a sort of cabaret/experimental/contempor ary folk music [...]
photo Howdy from the east coast, folks. This is gonna be a short one but a good, nay great, one. The Ghost Bees are from Halifax but they sound like they are from a place far away both geographically and temporally. They are not from around these parts, you might say, but that's ok, because while [...]

So they might not be the bloody twins from The Shining , but Romy and Sari Lightman , the two members of Canadian band Ghost Bees , are twins who claim to be telepaths. What brings the Red Rum twins to mind (besides the whole twins thing that is) when listening to Tasseomancy , the Ghost Bees' debut album, is it's haunting eerieness. The strange thing is that they use fairly typical instrumentation, but it's put together in a quietly sparse arrangements. Think Joanna Newsom [...]
The term 'ghost' in the name of this band is something of a clue. This is a lovely little mini-album of ghostly, spectral folk tales, which twirls and wails just a little above where many of you may wish to go, but nevertheless I find myself rather enjoying it. This is one of those instances where [...]

Since they're female and twins and Canadian, I guess its inevitably easy to compare Ghost Bees to Tegan and Sara. But if you actually listen you'll notice that Romy and Sari Lightman have a sound all of their own; an "eclectic brand of spooky folk" to quote what some critics have referred them to. And it's a fitting description: Ghost Bees do indeed sound spooky and folksy, but also very beautiful. Their EP, Tasseomancy , is also a haunting journey of intricate storytelling, [...]

Some people say that twins have a sixth sense, an ability to mutually sense when their brother or sister is in a state of distress. Though telepathic interpretations remain too otherworldly to be of widely noted acceptance, it is not hard to fathom that twins often share a type of bond that is indescribable in mere words. Since twins are born and often raised together, I imagine that the shocking degree of emotional inseparability has something to do with paralleled brain structures, with both relaying similar emotions in regard to specific circumstances. That is just a mere guess though; apart [...]

I've already gone crazy with my praise for Halifax's Ghost Bees . Their unique brand of swirling folk is truly hauntingly beautiful. I don't mean that in the way most reviewers do (Read - I'm not just tossing out an accepted term to describe folk music with bends and creaks). No, I actually mean that as beautiful as the Lightman's songs are, at points they actually creep me out. Their debut EP - Tasseomancy - opens with the terrific Vampires of the West Coast (which the girls actually premiered [...]

So here it is. The first installment of our cross-country spotlight. We chose Nova Scotia because, well, it's where we are both from. I can't remember a time when Nova Scotia was putting out so much good music, but any indie fans might want to look past Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver to the land of donairs , Bluenoses and Schooner beer . We tried to cover all the angles, giving you some folk, pop, rock and hip hop. Some of the highlights (for people unaware of the NS scene) are a new song from [...]
