It's no secret that I've been a big fan of Gigi Barocco here on Chemical Jump over the course of time. I even wrote this open letter to him close to 2 years ago. Now, somehow with the stars being aligned, he's agreed to do a Guest Mix! With some of the best artwork I've featured, it's really a mix after my own heart since I've posted most of the tracks before, so you shouldn't have any problem having a 30 minute non-stop dance party. The man also has two official remixes dropping tomorrow. One [...]

This show began like any other, but without the transition difficulties. All was smooth. The music, on the other hand, was not. After a long, satisfying week, I was in need of some loud, abrasive rock music. But it wasn't all like that. Due to the cold weather, I mixed in some beach pop, fuzzy dream pop and good old garage rock and pop. Don't forget to hit up the bottom of this post and listen to two tracks from the playlist! "Torn Curtain" by Television [...]

This remix is awesome. The mood shifts from a deep murky to Ibiza as the track marches on. I know I will pay this at a beach party somewhere just before the sun goes down and it gets all dark. Just my kind of track. Serge Santiago and Tom Neville aka. Retro / Grade first worked together on a re-edit of Kano's 'It's A War' in 2004, which received stand-up attention in all the right places. This random hook-up led to the idea for an album project, with the intention to create a modern day take [...]
Jane Bang is a provocative rapper with strong sex appeal and no censor button. With some select teaser tracks available through Myspace and the hype machine, Jane has built an uncanny following over the Internet practically overnight. She made her first entrance with the song "Untame", which depicts her racy beats with playful, biting dialogue -- which was accompanied with the music video. Staying true to her Brooklyn roots with old school rhyming techniques, she infuses beats from European influenced Electro. Progressing from "Untame," Jane has finally released her first official single, with an entire album due to be released [...]

Photos by G. Art by Gigi Chen . Eric Eyeball Richardson's hand featuring art by Gigi Chen Last night in New York at an art opening, I had the pleasure of chatting with two tremendously talented artists: Eric Eyeball Richardson and Gigi Chen . Prior to the opening, Eric was in the studio creating another one of his colorful masterpieces and he rushed across town in order to make the gala reception. Fellow artist Gigi Chen noticed that Eric had some paint on his [...]
White Sea - Mountaineer Director: Gigi Nicolas As a whole, M83 is the preeminent shoegaze band of this generation; but Morgan Kibby by her lonesome ain't too bad either. M83's under-appreciated vocalist/keyboardist has chosen to experiment with her own side project, called White Sea — derived from the Celtic origin of her name, meaning "white sea dweller." And while you are missing Anthony Gonzalez's majestic voice, White Sea is pretty much the spiritual sound of M83. Mountaineer is a courageously exceptional attempt that shows that Morgan Kibby is perfectly capable [...]

As mortifying as it is, a lot of my love for music started with musical theater. To my young ears, the rich lyrical worlds, accompanied by lush, orchestral instrumentation really did the trick. When I say that Julia Holter's song "Gigi" sounds like musical theater, I certainly mean it as a compliment. Since Julia's upcoming full length on Leaving Records (tentatively titled Tragedy ) is an ode to Greek Tragedy, It seems that she's no stranger to theatricality. The song is named for the novel by Colette , which was actually adapted into [...]

2010 was quite a year. It saw graduations, festivals, a move from Athens to Barcelona, the discovery of a new city, a slight, um, slowing down of our blog activity, a World Cup, many flights (17 for me), and a lot of great music. So, without further ado, we present to you: So, how did we compile this rather fantastic list, you ask? Easy, we consulted our trusty last.fm profiles (see the bottom of this page for our individual profiles). We then each chose our top 25 and [...]

Strolling Past the Old Graveyard (w/ Karl Blau) Alone at the Pier (w/ Rose Melberg) This is another record that I fortunately came across while looking at another favorites list. Gigi's album Maintenant came out on Tomlab Records in Jan. 2010, and is the brainchild of songwriter Nick Krgovich from Canadian indie pop bands P:ano and No Kids . It features a handful of guest vocalists, which include Owen Pallett, Rose Melberg, Zac Pennington, Mirah, and Karl Blau. After one [...]
My radio debut, a musical review of the year, was first aired on Resonance 104.4 FM this New Years Eve 31st December 2010 at Midday, and is to be repeated 7th January at 10.30pm. You can download the show below, or listen to Resonance FM live on internet radio by clicking here . If you'd rather cut to the chase and miss out on my thoughts and ramblings, the songs are playlisted below. The problem with so-called best-of lists, is that they are really just a collection of items organized based on experience and time, in that there will be plenty of albums heard the following year and beyond that will hold just as much weight as these we dub as "Best." So, as of right now, at this particular time in the tail end of 2010 and the first moments of 2011, these albums are the best. There's no question about it; it will change. My next list (which I've started, but may take a while to publish) is [...]

A few days ago, No Kids / Gigi leader Nick Krgovich dropped a free holiday EP under the pseudonym Chris Mastheim. (Don't get the pun? Say it out loud.) The EP is called Chris Mastheim Is Here . Go to Exclaim! for my brief article about the release. Even though I'm a day late for Christmas, I'm still going to post his cover of "Christmastime Is Here" (the classic from A Charlie Brown Christmas ). The synth backing is based on the Twin Peaks [...]
