It appears that those two new Keor Meteor tracks we heard last month were indeed part of something bigger. Both "Megaupload" and "Bring It To Ya Face", two politically charged tunes, appear on the Parisian producer's new project, Soft Space . There's also a tribute to the late Gil Scott-Heron , some choice samples about getting ridiculously high, and more than enough head-nodding beats. Yeah, this is a trip. Hit the skip to stream and download the project. Download: Keor Meteor - Soft Space [Bandcamp]

Activist/musician/writer Pat Thomas has been busy the past five years compiling music, speeches and photos from the height of the Black Power movement, spending much of that time in Oakland, California, the birthplace of the Black Panther Party. The result is Thomas' forthcoming book, Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975 (out March 5 through Fantagraphics Books ), which entrenches us in one of the most politically and culturally explosive times in America, and more specifically in the writings and music of black revolutionaries like Bobby Seale, Huey Newton and [...]

Despite his passing away last May, Gil Scott-Heron published his memoir The Last Holiday earlier this month. The Last Holiday is a great read if you're interested in Gil Scott-Heron's life; it's a great way to see the inner workings of his mind and opinions. In the book, he comes off as a completely unpretentious person, so much so that it almost seems like he doesn't necessarily recognize his own import and influence on the younger generation. If you're not familiar with Gil Scott-Heron, you should be. If you have ever cared about hip-hop, [...]

For those of you who are new to the site, this is a list of my favourite dance music from the last year. It's not exclusively remixes, and yes, you can argue you could dance to the songs in the Top Tracks list too. Out in the Streets - Africa HiTech The Look (Koreless remix) - Jacques Greene Surph - Rustie Sketch - Synkro Sicko Cell - Joy Orbison Rolling In The Deep (Jamie xx Shuffle) [...]
News that Lil Wayne and some MTV VJs from the 80s all have book deals inspired me to check out what else was on the way. Quite a number of interesting books by and about famous musicians are coming out in the first half of 2012. For me, Gil Scott-Heron's memoirs are a must read and I look forward to Lil Wayne's prison tales. I'm also curious about Johnny Ramone's autobiography, written while he knew was dying. What are you looking forward to reading and what have I missed? Let us know in the comments. [...]

I don't mean to be a prude when I do this, but we all had favourite albums last year, you can't deny that, and I had too many. In fact, so many that I loved that it was difficult to decide between them all, and I had been reading endless 'trendy choice' end-of-year lists before the year had even gone out. So I thought I might deliver some kind of personal justice by posting one that people can sneer at all they want, but might actually pick out something they overlooked and think "Hey, I might actually try that now, [...]

These are my favourite albums of 2011. 1 It wasn't until I went back through my albums that I truly realized how much I adored this album. I could pick out nearly every song as my favorite, and as a whole it feels like a true story, even that weird free jazz bit that everyone complains about. Fleet Foxes create pure sonic bliss. 2 As someone who had invested a serious amount [...]

Take a look at the Music section of your local bookstore. Shelf after shelf of books feeding off the familiar narrative of rise, fall and - ideally - rise again. Time and time again, early promise and hits give way to drugs, booze and other expression-sapping destructive distractions, with a latter-day "comeback" - where applicable - adding a spot of positivity towards the end. Gil Scott-Heron 's career fits this mould perfectly. Success as a poet and a novelist, and a string of strong, socially conscious jazz-influenced soul/funk albums in the 702s [...]

I am pleased to present to you the very first in a line of three freestyles that will extend from now until February 12th. It will be premiering right here on Ocean Pedestrians February 12th. Follow me @OceanPdestrians . mp3: Jo' Christo - NY Is Killing Me Freestyle (Prod. Jamie xx)

Last year , the world lost a true revolutionary. It seemed that only in the years leading up to his death, had greater pop culture begun to realize the true impact and importance Gil Scott-Heron had had on its own landscape. Though hip-hop and jazz historicists, vinyl collectors and political minds had been singing his praises for decades, it seemed that the last few years of his life saw that well-deserved reverence reaching an unprecedented level. The release of his final album, I'm New Here , a collaborative effort with XL Recordings founder Richard Russell, and the posthumous Jamie [...]
It is somewhat poetic that 'We're New Here' would turn out to be Gil Scott-Heron's last release before he sadly passed away in 2011. In a career where he distinguished himself for confounding expectations it felt like the tracks from 'I'm New Here', his triumphant comeback album from 2010, where ripe to be quoted, sampled [...]

Another year, another astonishing array of releases to get you through January to December. But where last year had some very clear cut winners across the board (from the likes of Arcade Fire, Kanye West and LCD Soundsystem), this year has not appeared so obvious. But, better late than never, Hotcakes brings you an eclectic list carefully decided by our five writers. Enjoy! 30. Givers - In Light 29. Balam Acab - Wander / Wonder 28. The Black Keys - El Camino 27. Gui Boratti - III [...]

I don't normally do a top ten for the year end past, but felt the need to just put on together. So click it below and feel free to tell me to bugger off. 1. Adele - 21 (iTunes) HERE (Amazon) HERE There is NO denying that this is the record of the year. However many records she may have sold this year it doesn't really matter, the fact is, this record is flawless from start to finish. The production, [...]

As the year winds down to a close and we look ahead to the promise of 2012, it's only fitting that we pause for a moment to remember several dance music artists who we lost in 2011. Some of these artists are well known, others aren't. No matter what their level of profile was at the time of their passing, all of these artists left a legacy of music for future generations to enjoy. Loleatta Holloway One of the most sampled voices in music history died on March 21 after slipping into a [...]
