Gil Scott-Heron returns with a new record after a long hiatus!

"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is one of my favorite funk albums of all time. Gil Scott-Heron was on some next level shit when he put out that album, and is still impressing the masses years later. He's releasing his XL debut on February 9th, and though it's titled "I'm New Here", it's actually quite a relief to hear the first single and realize that Gil is putting out the same heavy funk he's been involved in creating for years. This album is his first since 1994 and he's out on tour this month to [...]

Chanukkah is ending tonight, and with it the excuse to gorge myself on latkes and applesauce. The end of Chanukkah also means continued subjection to the hundreds of awful Christmas songs that pervade the airwaves this time of year. One of the nice things about Judaism: no proselytizing and no great cultural imperialism make it very unintrusive. The canon of Chanukkah songs appears to be growing, though. Or, rather, replicating. Because Adam Sandler's song about Jewish celebrities wasn't quite good enough to stand on its own, we now have a glammed up cover version by none other than Neil Diamond. [...]

Gil Scott-Heron - We Almost Lost Detroit ( buy ) We almost lost Detroit back in 1966 (the year of my birth in Detroit) when the Fermi 1 nuclear power plant suffered a partial fuel meltdown. Having survived that close call, Detroit just let itself go ...
The revolutionary poet is back. 100% badass.

Looks like the BBC got the jump on America by premiering the video for "Where Did the Night Go" last night, a track from the forthcoming Gil Scott-Heron album. Well, who did you expect to beat them to punch stateside anyway, Fox News? I'm New Here is set for an early 2010 release on the XL label, and will be Scott-Heron's first new album in 16 years. Even before that, he hadn't exactly been a whirlwind of activity — Scott-Heron released only one album (1994's Spirits ) after going into semi-retirement from recording following his [...]

The legendary Gil-Scott Heron , the black radical poet, musician, composer, author and singer whom many refer to lovingly with titles like "the black Bob Dylan" and "the godfather of rap", has been long presumed dead due to his conspicuous absence from music. Like several of his contemporaries, Scott-Heron accrued a tremendous following and much of his success during the 1970's and 1980's, a short time after which he seemed to all but disappear. When Scott-Heron began failing to show up for scheduled concerts, rumors began to circulate over the course of many years about [...]

Combining complex metaphor, time travel, scintillating lyrical gymnastics, anime, radical politics and an apocryphal-dystopian comic book aesthetic, Red Tide member and Florida MC, BC , The Black Child , delivers his solo debut, the first of a three part conceptual album, " Time Pieces. " " Time Pieces " is a temporal travelogue, a sonic cultural history, and a riveting manifesto about Pop World , told by a dark messenger from the future, stranded in time, and compelled to [...]
