Filed under: News , Exclusive , Between the Notes Getty, Asylum, Getty Although actors-turned-politicians like Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger get most of the attention, they're not the only entertainers to throw their hats into the political arena. Plenty of musicians have tried to bridge the gap between public performance and public service. Some have even succeeded. The latest musician to attempt this is Youssou N'Dour . The Grammy-winning Senegalese singer -- best [...]

Merry Christmas! We wouldn't dream of posting today without presents, so voila! A playlist and two wonderful tracks for this festive day. The first comes to you from the northern European Yuletide tradition, courtesy of the King's Singers, with their heart-melting performance of "Wexford Carol." The carol, a traditional Irish hymn originating from County Wexford, is also known by its Gaelic name, " Carúl Loch Garman." It has been performed for hundreds of years, and is considered to be one of the oldest Christmas carols with a melody outside the Roman Catholic tradition. Due to Britain's rule over Ireland, it [...]

Tom Croose: "Cho Chua" Here's an absolutely stunning edit of Tom Croose , one half of NY's duo Worst Friends, whom you may remember from his killer edit of Fleetwood Mac's "Never Going Back Again". The New York producer just released this rework of Caetano Veloso & Gilberto Gil's "Cada Macaco No Seu Galho (Cho Chua)" on new label Resista. Yes, it's so hard to resist. Pick up the 12" here .

Slowly but surely the temperature's dropping, and me no like at all. So to warm the heart a wee bit, let's hear it for a few tropical, steaming choice cuts from late sixties and early seventies Brazil. Take courage everybody, and don't forget to shake those marácas of fire regularly. Gal Costa - Mamãe, Coragem MP3 O Bando - E Assim Falava Mefistófeles MP3 Os Mutantes - A Minha Menina MP3 Caetano Veloso - Alegria, Alegria [...]

Here's to that deepest, most fleeting of pleasures - the Vermont fall. Yesterday there was that first September chill in the air. It's inevitable in New England - the only question is when, not if, it will come. It always sends my thoughts back to childhood - playing soccer, carving pumpkins... all the real and imagined nostalgia the limbic system can conjure. Here are some tracks, old and new, I thought of during that first crisp breeze: The last song on Bon Iver's recently released self-titled album, "Beth / Rest," was often cited by fans as the least [...]

Beyonce's recent fusion of classic American music with rhythms and guitar styles from Africa inspired us to create a brief selection of similar songs, from both sides of the pond. Of course, most music in either hemisphere consists, in at least a distant sense, of a blend of these two origins, but here it's particularly noticeable: "Taj Mahal" - Jorge Ben "End Of Time" - Beyonce "Zombie" - Fela Kuti "Domingo No Parque" - Gilberto Gil "Mr. Jones" - Talking Heads "Heartbeat" - Nneka [...]

Eliane Elias, the Brazilian singer, pianist and composer, is no stranger to the music scene. She was one of the many notable Latin jazz artists featured in Fernando Trueba's wonderful documentary film Calle 54 . She has worked with legends like Herbie Hancock and trumpeter Randy Brecker , to whom she was once married. And her latest release, Light My Fire , marks a career that spans nearly three decades. Her new album not only contains her signature Bossa Nova work, but she also covers [...]

Andres Renteria is a DJ with a soft spot for other people's soft spots, and he's the man behind this edition of IT'S ALL FOR YOU, TUBE. "These are all songs that are totally heartfelt and make me feel good about life. Even though the majority of them have been in my life for years, they still make me feel like I am going to explode from loving them so much."— Andres Renteria Judy Mayhan Feat. [...]

Many find it hard to believe but I often need to take a break from high volume, head banging rock, punk and metal. The fact is staying away from what you love makes you love and crave it even more. And when I need to rest my battered ears I do not turn to mellow singer-songwriter crap, electronic "chill out" garbage or, even worse, Wilco. There are many other musical avenues I like to travel but one of my favorites is the high energy and rhythmically exciting realm of Brazilian music. I have many Bossa Nova compilations but when I [...]
Los Amigos Invisibles, Venezuela's most popular acid jazz / funk group, has been on the scene for more than a decade at this point. Their Grammy-nominated sound, which for the most part has functioned as a consistently refreshing alternative to the standard Latin pop coming out of the Other America, echoes Gilberto Gil during his "Palco" disco-ish days and Jamiroquai, well, at any point in his career. Not So Commercial , released for download February 8, is a follow up to their 2009 release Commercial: technically, in fact, it's a collection of the "leftovers" from their previous [...]
Colombian musician Juanes has recently released his 5th studio album titled P.A.R.C.E.: an album that features an average ensemble of tracks. P.A.R.C.E by the way, is short for the word "parcero" which means "friend" or "buddy". And according to Juanes, this latest album is about love, peace, and freedom. What a friendly [...]

Joao Amorim and Gilberto Gil at Green Festival DC 2010 (via the official Green Festival website) Since I'm catching up on posting up some BlackRadioIsBack.com / FuseBox Radio Broadcast videos today (FINALLY), here is some from this year's Green Festival DC programming. I think that the speech/question & answer session between documentary filmmaker Joao Amorim & internationally renown musician Gilberto Gil should be interesting for [...]

Os Mutantes are one of few artists that are truly inter-generational. Even apart from their long-standing tenure, the influential Brazilian psychedelic-rockers play music that is received amiably by audiences of all ages and backgrounds. When I saw them live this past Saturday at Webster Hall, the somewhat obnoxious crowd there for opener Ariel Pink began [...]

So it appears Monday has whipped around again. This week's savory selection kicks off with a tune from Newcastle indie rockers Little Comets . They're here to remind us that it's October—good to know. Whether the fact that it's now October, the February of fall, is a good thing is a totally different issue. We plunge on. Brazilian mestre Gilberto Gil warms up the mix with a recent live version of ' Expresso 2222.' Dois , Dois , Dois . So Gilberto may [...]

Legendary Brazilian artist Gilberto Gil brought his signature blend of traditional and experimental world music to the Nokia Theatre Times Square Thursday night. Billed as "The String Concert," the evening featured the musical and political icon playing with his son, guitarist Bem Gil, and cellist-producer Jacques Morelenbaum. Unfortunately, we caught only three songs for photographing before we were escorted out of the sold-out, seated event, but the short performance we witnessed was nonetheless memorable. With just fingers on strings, the trio sketched out the sound of a much larger ensemble. The rhythmic plucking and strumming hinted [...]

I just figured, since you were already dancing, I'd let you keep dancing. Caetano Veloso, singer, songwriter and political activist, is amazing across the board. He's from the state of Bahia (mentioned in this song), which is the heartland of awesome Brazilian music and rhythm (and a place I would really like to visit someday). He moved to Rio in the late 60s, in hopes of breaking into the Bossa Nova scene. Instead, he helped find The Tropicalismo Movement (Tropicalia) . Thanks, guy. That was a way more awesome thing for [...]

Oh foggy San Francisco! Why aren't you be a tropical island? I suppose I'll never know. At least I've got Brazilian musical superstar Gilberto Gil (and Minister of Culture) to get me through the gray days. Obrigada to Gilberto for this song, one of my favorites of all time: Gilberto Gil & Caetano Veloso - "Cada Macaco No Seu Galho" — Basil
