Since firing off my last post , there's been this little nagging voice in my head going "FerGawd'sSakeMan,JustGive'emW hatTheyWant", and since what the majority of our visitors want this week is the lovely Miss Hills, I now give to you un petit peu de Gillian Hills. Beginning with the song everyone's talking about, as covered in that opening episode of Mad Men season 2. Gillian Hills - Zou Bisou Bisou Next, it's time [...]
a Bang on the money this week, arriving on fishy Friday, right on time. I even sit here sweetly sipping sparkling water, but then again the sun is not even in sight of the yard arm. Nursing a spot of lower back pain having taken the dog (and myself) for a run this morning in the wrong trainers (a bit like Wallace really, except not trousers, and Monty’s not quite in the intellectual league of Gromit). Trainers without cushioning equals jarred back for old bones. Hence indulging in a new style of free form [...]
If you're wondering just what on earth was with that "Zou bisou bisou" song from Mad Men on Sunday night, look no further — we're here to help! The song was a prime example of yé-yé, the Francophone take on bubblegum teen pop that flourished in France during the early 1960s and briefly became a global phenomenon. The genre took its name from a bastardization of the English "yeah yeah," gave the world some of the 1960s' best pop songs, and even got a serious academic working-over from Susan Sontag, who wrote about yé-yé in her 1964 essay [...]

A sultry version of a Gillian Hills-tune in the first episode of the new Mad Men-season ! It's all over the internet (thanks Taylor for the update!), haven't been able to find a video yet, 'cause I'd love to see Jessica Paré shimmy to the chanson. Not the first time Mad Men refers to a French tune - in the second season a coffee-commercial based on Gainsbourg's Couleur Café was used ( listen here ). If you compare Parés version with the one by Hills ( or Sophia Loren ), the Europeans win by [...]

Following kitty’s suggestion we give you the lovely Miss Hills and her achingly beautiful rendition of The Zombies ’ exquisite baroque-pop lament Leave Me Be . The link from part 6 > Our Gillian had a small, but racy, part in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange: when that naughty Droog Alex picks her and her ice-lolly sucking friend up in the local record emporium , inviting them back to his pad to listen to some of his " angel trumpets and devil trombones ". [...]

La tête à l'envers by 60's ye-ye legend Gillian Hills is labeled 'non-seasonal', 'cause it's not about Christmas. But the giggly lyrics are set to Jingle Bell Rock, therefore it IS a seasonal track in my book. And on dark days like this, it's always a pleasure to hear and watch the bubbly blonde, innit? Let's face it, the vast majority of people who make their new year resolutions at the start of January will be well and truly off their respective wagons by now, rendering the whole charade a little futile. I've never been much good at keeping them myself - in fact the only one I can seriously remember upholding was my 2006 vow to give up my job before the year was out. Eight months later I escaped the shackles of full-time employment, and I've been skint but happy ever since. This year I thought I should try [...]

Tired of Christmas tunes? well maybe a foreign language might restore some mystery, magic & sparkle to the genre... Eleven songs with a festive theme, all sung in languages other than English, mostly in French, & all, it must be said... featuring charming female singers. These are very fine indeed.Credit must go to the excellent Filles Sourires for making many of these known to me. ♫ Noelle a Hawaii -- [...]

As today is Bastille Day, I thought that I would put together a compilation of songs in French (by artists of several nationalities). This task proved more arduous than I initially anticipated, as I simply did not realise quite how many French songs I had in my music library! Therefore, the difficulty came not in finding suitable tracks, but in whittling down their sheer volume! I decided to enforce a 'female singers only' rule (oh, how I love those French ladies!), in order to cut the numbers... Please visit Ceci N'est Pas un Blog for the full [...]

Coming Monday April 30th, Holland will be totally orange because we celebrate our royals during Queen's Day . On that same day in London, at St Giles-in-the-Fields church near Tottenham Court Road, there will be a fundraising event to keep Resonance FM in the air. This radiostation has probably the best French music show ever in their roster, Rockfort . To keep 'm both up & about, none other than yeye-icon Gillian Hills (in collaboration with guitarist Olivier Mellano, who worked with Dominique A.), as well as Barbara Carlotti , Mademoiselle and [...]

Anything you need to know about cheeky girl Gillian Hills you can read @ Cha Cha Charming . Read it, while listening to this oh-so-lovely song, that made me fall in love with Gillian just a little deeper. Thanks to J-L for the mp3. Gillian Hills - Cou-Couche Panier
