This is one of the greatest songs ever written (in my opinion). It can never be heard enough. This song is from Soul Journey released in 2003. When I play a Welch song, I'm never quite sure what I'll hear. Will I hear a folk song, or a tinge of rock or some bluegrass? This one was easy to figure. MP3 File
I needed a siesta from the blog today. Apologies. We'll be back up to our scintillating self tomorrow. In the meantime, here are a bunch of videos I've been obsessed with lately. Throwing Muses, "Dizzy" (live, 1989) Wilco, "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" (live, Ottawa, July 2006) Gillian Welch, "Look at Miss Ohio" (live at Largo) Robyn Hitchcock, "I Often [...]

mp3: Buffy Sainte-Marie - Cod'ine mp3: Marianne Faithfull - Black Girl mp3: Precious Bryant - Fever mp3: Gillian Welch - Revelator mp3: Kaki King - Second Brain mp3: Audrey Hepburn - Moon River Another all female, all amazing (and allmost all acoustic) post for you today. Girls with guitars is the theme. Buffy Sainte-Marie was born on a Cree reservation in Saskatchenwan, Canada. While at university she became known for her protest songs and after graduating [...]
I'm seeing Radiohead on Wednesday night, and that seemed as good an excuse as any for this week's theme. Easy Star All-Stars - Let Down From the people who brought you Dub Side of the Moon , it’s Radiodread ! You can probably guess the musical genre, but they’re surprisingly adept at bringing the Jamaican flavor to the music, throwing in horns and a big chorus on top of the backbeat guitar. Jorge Drexler - High and Dry You may not [...]

simply because we haven't done a covers post in some time, and because the clair and cher songs have been repeating 'round here recently, and because the new frontiers ' version of gillian welch's excellent "look at miss ohio" turned up in our box the other day, we decided that these six recordings, all of which we enjoy - if for distinct reasons - and think you will too, should be hoarded no longer. clair - outta me (bikini kills) [...]

This week The New Frontiers will celebrate their recent signing with High Road Touring (Wilco, Drive By Truckers, Yo La Tengo, Old 97s), by hitting the road on a coast-to-coast national tour in support of 'Mending' , their debut record released earlier this year via The Millitia Group . While the Dallas based quintet has already spent all of 2007 touring alongside some of the country's hottest buzz bands ( Manchester Orchestra, Colour Revolt, and Annuals ), and earlier this year with label mate Denison Witmer, this time around the tour will allow them [...]

The New Frontiers from Dallas dropped their spacious and glowing cover of the Gillian Welch song "Look At Miss Ohio" into my inbox today, like a little gift. That aching original has been one of my favorite songs to attempt harmony with on the chorus for a few years now, but where Gillian's voice often takes on that haunted and weary edge, this version burns a little with spreading warmth -- like a good glass of whiskey. It sounds like roadtrips that start at 4am after too much talking and dreaming about the wanderlust. [...]

Last weekend i made it over to Austin. i swear, sometimes i really need a simple Austin fix. Made my obligatory trip to Waterloo without much of anything in mind. i knew i wanted to pick up some vinyls - hoping for some Townes, but ended up getting an eclectic mix from the bargain section later on at Backspin Records . ( btw , check out ThinkIndie .com for some record stores near you that [...]

Before Elizabeth Gilbert wrote the ubiquitous Eat, Pray , Love, she wrote a fantastic book about a guy named Eustace Conway called The Last American Man . Conway is a naturalist who moved out of his house when he was 17 years old to live in a tee pee. From there, he bought a plot of land in North Carolina that he named Turtle Island and has been living the "old fashioned" way ever since. There's mountains more to the story than that, but the interesting part of this book is [...]

A long weekend of solo parenting while my wife headed off to Sonoma County for a long-overdue vacation has left me too exhausted for deep thought. Happily, thanks to reader emails, new releases and new discoveries, I've got plenty of material for yet another installment of our popular (Re)Covered series, wherein we recover songs that dropped through the cracks too late to make it into the posts where they belonged. A few weeks back, when my laptop went kablooie, Jamie -- host of the ever-miraculous coverblog Fong Songs [...]

hmm, this was supposed to be posted like 10 hours ago. not too sure what happened. anywho... here is what is commonly referred to as the "destroyer sessions," and featured david rawlings and gillian welch. it is believed that these tracks were laid down a few days before mr adams began work on heartbreaker . 1. born yesterday 2. dreaming's free 3. poison & the pain 4. no disguise 5. rainy days [...]
more crackly ancient beauty from mississippi records today, following yesterdays post on the magnificent skip james vinyl reissue. washington phillips was a preacher, instrumentalist and gospel singer. he did not die in an asylum in 1930. he probably did not play the bizzaro dolceola instrument that's often accredited to him. he did play more than likely some kind of [...]

16. Carter Family 17. Steve Earle 18. Lucinda Williams 19. Dwight Yoakam 20. Gillian Welch Arguably, there’s only one strictly “country” artist in today's batch, but I like to give the genre a broad definition (and I like all five of these artists), so no complaining. Here's one song from each: The Carter Family – Blackjack David (mp3) ( buy album ) Steve Earle – Copperhead Road (Live Acoustic) (mp3) ( buy album [...]

Gillian Welch: Annebelle [ purchase ] I don't know much about Gillian Welch, except that she rose to fame as a result of the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. I only own one album. Each of the songs on it have a sweet country feel and old fashioned pastoral lyrics. Several of the tracks are really quite beautiful. The featured track is excruciatingly sad. A mother with an apparently failing farm mourns the death of her daughter, Annabelle, who was the apple of her eye. [...]
This is the title song from Gillian Welch's third album, released in 2001. MP3 File
Here's one for the weekend. Everyone loves a good mixtape, and everyone loves a good cover song, so here's a mix I made of some of my favorite cover tunes. The mix spans a good deal of genres (R&B, country, reggae, folk, bluegrass) and artists - from relative unknowns (Clem Snide) to legends (Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Townes van Zandt ). It zig-zags a little, from an acoustic Sublime cover of Marley, to Reverend Al covering the Fab Four (worth it just to hear a band member yell "Shut up, Al Green" in the beginning) [...]
