Mikal Cronin is growing on me. Not in the this-will-be-on-my-end-of-year -list kind of growing, but in a everytime-this-album-pops-up-o n-shuffle-I'm-pleasantly-surpr ised sort of growing. For a while I was assured that Mikal Cronin was reinventing the Gin Blossoms wheel and I had to sit back and think "this is where we are in music huh? Right back at the [...]

Apparently, there's a wicked case of nostalgia going around. I had no idea until I read Chuck Klosterman's recent Grantland article (which I highly recommend) on the epidemic, but you know what? I'm kind of glad Chuck said something because now I feel less alone. I've been weirdly obsessed with the 90s for ... well, a while now. It started with watching Thirtysomething reruns on tv, and then Northern Exposure on DVD. And the more I was re-exposed to the 90s, the more I've wanted 90s stuff - to the point that I've even got Soul Asylum on [...]
Slow week for announcements, but there are some gems up in here: Remember the '90s? Yeah, they like, weren't that long ago, and just when we thought we were nearing the end of this otiose, perva... Continue reading "Gin Blossoms, John Prine Lead This Week's Show Announcements" >

Decided to switch the theme up a little bit this Thursday. I was scanning through my iTunes and came across these classics from wayyy back. Spin Doctors - Two Princes Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy Third Eye Blind - Semi Charmed Life Had to throw Marky Mark's claim to fame in here too. Marky Mark - Good Vibrations (ft. Loleatta Holloway & the Funky Bunch)
Being billed as the UK's answer to Kings of Leon immediately lumps a rather large weight on the shoulders of London trio Them Changes. But nevertheless, that seems to be the word about town. Not bad for an act that started its life as Michael Kiwanuka's backing band. They eventually decided to form their own [...]
At least one man - maybe scores of men - once said that music is not your friend in the immediate aftermath of a negative life-changing event. I don't know who said that (Thomas Hobbes? Kierkegaard? Sirhan Sirhan?) but he made a good point. Pretty much every song ever penned was done so to remind [...]

I like the story developing around unsigned indie artist Billy the Kid . The Vancouver singer/songwriter self released in EP in 2009. Her new record will be funded by her fans. She launched a fan funding campaign on her website www.billythekidonline.com to raise the money necessary to record her new album. Her fund raising option are interesting including the option to buy publishing rights to half of one of her new songs for $5000, and finally for $10,000 you can own the publishing rights to any song [...]
Classic rock with muscly guitar made for the festival season.

This week's BY REQUEST comes to us from The Steam Co.'s friend Anthony, who has spent a week in the office having 90's song off's with his co-workers. And winning. Here's to you, dear sir, and to your hopes and dreams of 90's DJ domination. We miss the decade just like you do, and even more than VH1. "The Spice Girls - Wannabe" "Oasis - Wonderwall" "Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit" "P.Diddy and the Family [...]

Oh, well that's cool; give the kid who listens to everything but country a country album to review. Well, you know what? Fine, I'll do it. I have almost no knowledge to relate this to, but maybe that's a good thing... Through a little research, I found that the High Irons were, up until recently, known as Katy Mae. They had built up a following, then changed line up and eventually name. Cool beans. Oh, and they're from Brooklyn, which makes sense because that's where the modern country scene is moving to, right? No matter, though, [...]
Why the Boston Globe named Kingston530 "One of Boston's hottest bands?"

CONCERT REVIEW: Fall Q Ball featuring Steven Page, David Archuleta, & Gin Blossoms October 19, 2010 Altar Bar, Pittsburgh The Fall Q Ball, a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation sponsored by local radio station 92.9, was a mish-mash of old and new pop artists that didn't quite fit on the same bill. I skipped out on openers Christina Perri and Ryan Star but arrived in time to see Steven Page , former Barenaked Ladies [...]
Before I get to the Picks Of The Week today, I want to take a minute and post about Eyedea , a local rapper on the Rhymesayers label. He was found dead earlier today at only 28 years old. The cause of death is unknown at this time, but no matter what it ends up being, this is a tragic loss for the MPLS hip hop community and the music community as a whole. I had a chance to see Eyedea and DJ Abilities a few months ago for free and passed up that chance due to prior commitments, [...]
What a weekend. Friday night I got to see Emeralds and drink some good beers, last night I saw Enter The Void , and tonight I am watching Best Worst Movie as I pen this entry. It's kind of amazing to think that I saw Troll 2 for the first time on HBO almost twenty years ago, and now there's a documentary about its "cult classic" status. What's next, an Cinefamily-approved Airborne screening at the Silent Movie Theater? Hmm...that gives me an idea... Nah, not now. I've got a mix tape [...]

Albums Deerhunter – Halcyon Digest Indie-rock self defined is music that is like regular rock music, but just a little grittier and riskier in terms of how sounds of develops. Deerhunter encapsulates this description almost completely, they do some things slightly differently, and in this album at least they succeed. Gin Blossoms – No Chocolate Cake Not quite Gorillaz, but also not not quite Gorillaz. Confused? Listen to the album and everything [...]
We've got quite a few great releases for you this week, and this time around we're going to try to fit them all in one post. Take a look at our quick rundown, and as always, if you dig what you hear, support the artists by picking up an album or two. Eric Clapton is back with his 19th studio album, Clapton via Reprise Records. Of the album, Clapton says, "This album wasn't what it was intended to be at all. It's actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let [...]
