Here in Minneapolis, we have this annual music festival called the Basilica Block Party. It takes place at the Basilica of Saint Mary and consists of three total stages that highlight music groups over the course of just 2 days. Most of the Basilica workers are volunteers, and pretty much every stand gives out free samples of something, so at the very least, you'll have a good time collecting

(I don't care if these are sorta-old, they cracked me up. Trust me, YOU WANT TO CLICK AFTER THE JUMP. -- AZ) Freelance photographer Lyle Whitworth shot these photos of O'Fallon's Heritage & Freedom Fest , held on July 4. More photos after the jump. Candlebox lead singer Kevin Martin performs at the O'Fallon Heritage & Freedom Fest, July 4. Peter Klett, Candlebox guitarist, rocks out on his guitar. [...]

Today's five was kind of inspired by Shawn Fogel 's excellent performance at Bag Of Songs night at the M Room a couple weeks ago. In his set, Shawn covered an excellent song by the band Velo Deluxe , it was a song I hadn't heard before and with a bit of Shawn's help I now have a copy of the Velo Deluxe version of the songs Angels for you today. Velo Deluxe was formed by John [...]
So it's been over a week since my last post, and that's just not cool. No excuse really, other than laziness and distraction by that little thing called real life. This'll be a bit of a wandering post, but it'll more or less get you up to speed. I've spent the last several weeks (since I got home from college, pretty much) job hunting. Given the fact that I'm using present tense here should tell you how said search has gone. Turns out that nobody particularly wants seasonal help from college students while in a recession. Imagine that. [...]
This is a fitting way to start another week off right. Back to work after a long but eventful weekend. Amy, Hailey, and I spent the weekend up in beautiful Minneapolis, Minnestoa visiting friends we haven't seen in quite awhile. We walked around Uptown, went record shopping, watched the kids play, drank some Surly beer, toured the city's lakes, listened to the Once soundtrack, enjoyed a real happy hour, drank some good bourbon, and more. I'll definitely have to move the Twin Cities to my short list. MP3 | [...]
If there's one movie I could watch over and over again, it will be Empire Records (1995) . It's not an Oscar-winning or any other award-winning movie for that matter, but it has got a bunch of young movie superstars-to-be, a supeeerb boss, memorable quotes, and one hell of a soundtrack. This movie and soundtrack inspired my youth in the 1990s. Oh cliché. So here in the spirit of ushering the new year, I present to you, my entire collection of tracks from Empire Records I have managed to find over the years. [...]

The 90s was a strange and exciting time for me. Fresh out of school, weaning off flea-infested metal and senseless movies with young pretty actors filled with oddball dialogue that amounted to nothing. But more importantly, many nights sitting in front of my beat up stereo, catching the 8pm show on Time Highway Radio with my hand on the record button, waiting for those killer tracks. There was a new sound on radio then. A new sound that was loosely classified by This is Alternative stickers stuck on their albums. The idea [...]

Did you ever have one of those songs that just kicks in an amazing flood of memories whenever you hear it ? MP3 : Gin Blossoms - Allison Road Buy Up and Crumbling

I've been helping a friend put together a product catalog for his business the last two weeks. This has meant having to suffer through listening to a lot of shitty music while there. I don't want to focus on the negative aspect of my radio listening experience, but I really felt obligated to share a few of the finer moments. It's really hard to put one's level of excitement into perspective when songs by Matchbox 20 and REO Speedwagon are followed by Kiss' "Hard Luck Woman" . I swear, I spent the twenty minutes that followed the [...]

Foundry Field Recordings are a one of those midwestern bands (Columbia, Missouri) that survive not on being a part of a certain east coast/west coast scene or style, but by taking influences from a variety of artists and creating something they're proud of, something unique. The influences for FFR range from the Pixies and Built to Spill to Wilco and Broken Social Scene. They are more experimental and in general, noisier than most pop bands you will find, but the distortion never takes a way from the melodies. The band is playing on Saturday of the Pygmalion Music Festival [...]
Take A Trip Toguether - Cure For Pain - 1993 02 - G. Love & The Special Sauce - Baby's Got Sauce - G. In the early 90's I wasn't listenng to a lot of music, and what I was listening to was all over the map. A little bit of country, a little bit of shoegaze (even though I didn't know that was what it was called) a little bit of whatever was popular on MTV or on WNEW-FM, the New York progressive rock dinosaur radio station. For me, it was a time of relearning how to listen to music, after a long period of not listening to much music at all. The three songs I'm posting here are songs I listened to [...]

Here are a few of the songs that have played on this morning's iPod shuffle in our house. Sure beats listening to songs from Blues Clues, Little Einsteins, or any of the other Playhouse Disney shows that Hailey watches. It's never too early to start your kids on good music. MP3 | Laura Veirs - Rialto Year Of Meteors MP3 | Hot Water Music - At The End Of A Gun No Division [...]
One of the big important early steps in starting a band is that all-important decision of what to call yourselves. Has to be something that will entice people to take a listen, but with just the right edge to it. If there is some hip in-joke connotation that could work too. So here's your first stop: the massive Wikipedia page devoted to Fictional Band Names in popular culture. From Hey That's My Bike to Sonic Death Monkey to yes, even Fingerbang , they're all here, waiting to be loved, discussed and [...]

Recent purchases = new music love. --- A friend made me listen to a Long Winters album a long time ago, and I promptly forgot all about it until she gushed about their new album, Putting the Days to Sleep . I must say, it's an album taht gets better and better every time I listen to it, and my favorite song, [...]

Since I was late last week, here’s helping number 2 (and all new stuff this time!): Gin Blossoms - Learning The Hard Way It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything new from the Gin Blossoms but this track makes it seem like it’s been worth the wait. I listened to Congratulations, I’m Sorry hundreds of times through my adolescent years and it’s good to hear something fresh - but still familiar. Major Lodge Victory , a full Gin Blossoms LP, is due out [...]
