From 1981 for Indie Saturday comes Girls At Our Best. A short-lived group who did some lovely angular pop. They seemed to be getting somewhere, having signed for Crysalis, when they split up, leaving a solitary album, a few singles and a Peel Session. From that Peel Session from 17 February 1981 and first transmitted only a few days later on 23 February, comes something that best represents their work - mostly because it's a compilation/megamix of their singles. The track includes the following: Getting Nowhere Fast, Politics, It's Fashion, Warm Girls, I'm Beautiful Now, Go For Gold . [...]
Just noticed that BLEEDIN OUT hit it's 4th year anniversary. 300,000 hits over that period. Not bad. Considering that I started this thang to exorcise; and quite often, exercise my demons; it's been a long strange trip. Or something. 4 years of (as someone once so aptly described it) of 1/3 music, 1/3 bitching about the government and 1/3 whining about my life. On the bright side, I've cyber-met some great people. I've also been able to write... which back in college was supposed to be my vocation. And, I have [...]
A blast from the past! That I only recently learned about... Oh well. Formed in 1979, Leeds' pop-punk outfit Girls At Our Best! only released a few singles and one full album, Pleasure (1981) before disbanding quietly. Despite the name there was actually only one girl in the band; singer Judy Evans, while James Alan played guitar, Gerald Swift took bass and late-joiner Carl Harper banged the drums. Apparently Thomas Dolby also appears here and there on the album playing (what else?) keyboards. All in all Pleasure lives [...]
Of all the posts that have shown up on the proliferous Cargo Culte blog, the one I have gone back to quite often is I Hate Art, Can't Stand It , which provides a nice companion soundtrack to Simon Reynolds' book Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984. With the permission of the Demagogues of the Cargo Culte, I have compiled 15 more hits from Art Punk's formative years. Some of the bands are mentioned in Reynolds' book; others are [...]
Here's another item from The Colonial Cookbook -- an advertisement for the finest feminine footwear fashions 1909 had to offer: Remember, ladies: Only the most shameless of harlots would be so brazen as to bare their ankles to strange men. It is but the shortest of slippery slopes leading from exposed calves to the catastophic folly of universal suffrage. (On a more serious socio-linguistic note, the use of "Patrician" for a line of late Victorian women's footwear is quite fascinating. The term itself describes a [...]

The UK post-punk band Girls At Our Best! had a slim output, and Pleasure , the CD reissue of their work, is currently fetching $200 (!) from certain merchants . In the spirit of sharing, here are two of our favorite Girls songs; "Too Big For Your Boots" is a ramshackle, piano-driven rave-up, while "Warm Girls" has a spiky guitar riff that's so great, the Girls can break the "don't name-check your band in your own song" rule with snotty aplomb. Girls At Our Best! - Warm Girls [MP3] [...]
The weekend is almost here. Ready to rock like a cloud of delocalized electrons around a lattice of positive ions? Slap on your best set of conduction and valance bands, and key your responsometer to “partyâ€, because today Armagideon Time is going metallic in the most literal, non-satanic way imaginable. Aardvark â€" Copper Sunset (from Aardvark , 1970) â€" This is an outstanding fuzzed out hard rock/heavy prog track reminiscent of early Deep Purple or Black Sabbath. The song is also noteworthy for being entirely organ-driven; the band did not [...]
