We had the honour of meeting legendary American house producer Barclay Crenshaw AKA 'Claude VonStroke' ahead of his appearance at Gist in Chelmsford, 5th April. The dirtybird label boss talked about his weakness for being a perfectionist, how dubstep taught him a thing or two, and also what track he'd play to distract zombies from eating his brains. Hi Claude, how are you? Great thank you, just getting ready for Miami. Congratulations on reaching 10 [...]
This weekend sees Subb-an playing at the launch of, Gist , a brand new deep house and techno night in Chelmsford, Essex. It's not often We Are Not A Rockband ventures outside London town but with one of the masterminds behind Gist being DJ Mag's Adam Saville, we thought it worth investigating. With Birmingham's Subb-an one of the residents for groundbreaking night Below in his hometown and one half of label One Records with Adam Shelton, we caught up with him to quiz him on playing Essex, what's new on his label and what one record he [...]

for some reason i found myself listening to this today. this being 802s for this comp known as c81. the rest of this post is exactly what i wrote when i posted this back in 08. c81 was compiled by nme journalist roy carr and rough trade pr dude christopher rose for the 5th anniversary of independent label movement in the uk and of course to show off rough trades wares. more info can be found here , via wikipedia. there's some real awesome stuff here, there are a few turds too. but of course what might be pure [...]
Update: Tickets for This Is It go on sale in the UK this Sunday at 12:01am. Hi everyone- long time no post. I'm back, and I actually have some really, really exciting things in the pipeline. First things first, I now write for Consequence Of Sound - see my bio and archive . I am allowed to re-post my articles on The Cold Cut, and therefore there should be a steady stream of good material posted here, whatever happens! The original article can be found [...]
So today Spotify released a demo of the mobile app that they've been working on in private: ever since the programme came into existence it's only been a matter of time before they did this. So what does this mean for music listeners? Most frequently, it's been argued that it's the end of the iPhone (the demo, very tellingly, uses a Google Android). However, it's not quite that cut-and-dried: at the moment, Spotify offers a far from comprehensive selection of music (case in point, they offer all of Pavement's albums bar Slanted and Enchanted), which needs to change [...]

Black Eyed Peas ft. Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Soft Shock (Link 2) *Limited downloads* So the Yeah Yeahs are back, and in style – they have quietly been evolving into a band of impressive range, and despite its crappy cover art (aren't Art School bands supposed to turn out decent sleeves even when their music is rubbish?) this album is a cohesive belter abetted by David Sitek's production magique. Much of the blog carping has suggested that YYY have neutered their sound using – shock horror! – synths on their record. [...]

Lily Allen- I Could Say (Link 2) Lily Allen- Back To The Start (Link 2) It was always going to be a fantastic album. The early demos were fully formed, we were kept in the loop throughout the recording process and the artist was experimenting. 'It's Not Me, It's You', Lily Allen's second album, is a triumph. The album somehow manages to stay grounded whilst Lily tests the water (and her comfort zone) before- presumably- dropping her definitive album number 3. This is the sound of [...]

When I finished this one I thought it was the weirdest, most disjointed yet with obscure synthpop, Northern Soul, reggae, '90s indie rock, new Fugiya & Miyagi and one of the weirdest records of the year. (Wild Beasts.) It's also got my first-ever attempt at ripping vinyl -- The Gist's "This is Love" -- which I've also included here as a separate download because I figured somebody might want it on it's own and it's never been released on CD (or digitally). But after walking around with it on headphones, I declare it a success. Hope you like it. We've [...]
Later tonight, a few miles up the Florida Turnpike (Boca Raton, to be exact), a trio of South Florida bands is going to be tearing it up. The Gist, Groove Factor, and Trip Aces are playing Murphy's Downtown Pub (36 SE 3rd St., in Boca). Admission at the door is only five dollars. Hard to beat that. Trip Aces is a quartet out of Jupiter, Fla. They describe their sound as similar to a Lamborghini Diablo, although I would say it's a little rougher around the edges, which is a good thing. [...]

good afternoons, people! today we're going all the way back to the 80's for this comp known as c81. c81 was compiled by nme journalist roy carr and rough trade pr dude christopher rose for the 5th anniversary of independent label movement in the uk and of course to show off rough trades wares. more info can be found here , via wikipedia. there's some real awesome stuff here, but of course there are a few turds too. but of course what might be pure shite to may, may be golden to you. so its all subjective. Gist - Greener Grass The Specials - Raquel Orange Juice - Blue Boy I was digging around the old iTunes '80s playlist this morning and came across something I had forgotten I had - the NME C81 compilation. Originally a cassette only release, it was given away free with two coupons and £1.50. Compiled by the NME and Rough Trade Records, it contained a a great array of acts and styles, both

The Gist: Love At First Sight As featured on the CD in the new ish of MOJO. From the album Embrace The Herd . Written by Stuart Moxham. All vocals and instruments by Stuart M., except bass by Phil Moxham and chop guitar by Dave Dearnaley. Absence of snare drum builds an exquisite tension here, not unlike this .
The Gist - Far Concern and Dark Shots from the 1983 "Embrace The Herd" album. After discovering (thanks to Marii's previous post ) the Young Marble Giants, I enjoyed Allison Staton's next band, "Weekend", and more recently Stuart Moxham's "The Gist". He said about this record something quite rare for a musician: "It's a symbol of my misery and lack of direction at that time. There's very few lyrics on it, for example, because I had nothing to say." I was quite surprised of such sincerity, but since [...]
