Nirvana photo courtesy of Sub Pop Perhaps no other day marks Seattle music history like April 5. Eighteen years ago today, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain took his life. Eight years later, on April 5, Alice in Chains' Layne Staley died from a drug overdose. But also on April 5, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready was born. (AIC's original bassist Mike Starr was born a day earlier.) So what better day to celebrate local music, particularly the era that made Seattle in/famous? On the Morning Show, John Richards is spinning all Seattle music, and you'll no doubt hear [...]

Git's album "Imagination" could be described as an Experimental Design with roots in underground Hip Hop. Git's musical style may be hard to pin point. His love of drums set the foundation for his sound: driving, percussion heavy productions anchored in traditional Hip Hop, with an experimental streak. His sound has many flavours and is not to be boxed in one label. One of the goals of this album is to fill the void that pop music has left. "Imagination" will remind us that talent and emotion can still be found in music today and one not always needs [...]

A coincidence I suppose. The day I started summer classes/attended the weather was 23- 36degrees Celsius, however, now that I have finished, the weather is about 13degrees C. with rain. A coincidence, or just bad luck? With a little less than a month of summer left, I have some serious planning to do, 1. I''ve decided not to go back to school until Jan. 2. I'm thinking of heading to Australia in Sept. but if the dough is low, then Montreal. But life [...]
This is some great old live footage of The Gits. I loved this band so much and saw them a ton live. To this day Mia's lyrics and voice put a tingle down my spine. But her murder was so tragic I also almost tear up when watching footage like this and listening to old Gits records...

In the early 1990s, while bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden were bringing national attention to grunge music, another underground scene was emerging, spearheaded by Kentucky punk rockers the Gits. Led by charismatic frontwoman Mia Zapata, the band was a staple of the Seattle punk movement before Zapata was brutally raped and murdered at the height of the Git's popularity. Despite efforts within the community to bring the killer to justice, the case remained unsolved for years. That is, until new evidence eventually surfaced, reopening the case file and giving new hope to those who [...]
On the surface, We Be Xuxa almost seems like a retread of old school American punk, but actually it evokes without constant copying—it's fresh-faced punk, yet my heart hears Born Innocent -era Redd Kross in their sisterly choruses, and early early Black Flag or even Ramones in their strumming (minus Greg Ginn's noodling) and Wipers downturns on the chords, and a Darby Crash-like insistence on writing lyrics too self-referential and profound to sing straight into the microphone. And there's even a Urinals cover!?! And there's a Beach Blvd -esque melodicism to Jessie Clavin's bass [...]

Interview by Derek Evers Photos by Olivia Wright [except where noted] "If I saw me, I'd say 'Look at that lesbian shredding!' But you know, I would automatically assume that any girl that shreds is a lesbian. I'm going to assume that Marnie Stern is a lesbian, and who else plays guitar? Yeah, they're all lesbians." Marissa Paternoster stands at a stout 5'2" tall and assures me she's only kidding about the sexuality of female guitar virtuosos, but if you were to judge [...]

Mia Zapata and her band The Gits , were a fixture in the exploding music scene of early 1990s Seattle. Alongside bands like 7 Year Bitch , Mudhoney , The Fast Backs , Nirvana and Green River , The Gits mixed elements of punk and hard rock to create a whole new Alternative sound… then, Zapata was found dead. A victim of a brutal rape, beating and strangulation. That was July 7, 1993. Fast forward through ten years of investigation by The Seattle Police, an [...]
Today's cover project choice is more "ripped from the headlines" than normal. In recognition of today's historic inauguration, we're profiling Sam Cooke's classic "A Change is Gonna Come." A civil rights anthem for decades, the song took on new importance recently when it became the de facto theme for Obama's election. Everyone and their brother chose the song for their election coverage — we certainly featured it in our election mix back in November — and although it didn't make the official Obama soundtrack , [...]

The Shondes Genre: Rock / Classical / Indie From: Brooklyn, New York, United States Type the words Jewish queercore into google and the only band that you'll turn up are Brooklyn quartet The Shondes (you will, however, need to press return otherwise you'll get nothing!). This could mean that Jewish queercore is a genre too far or that The Shondes, who take their name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace", are the only band brave enough [...]

When local Gits singer Mia Zapata was found raped and murdered it devastated the local music community in Seattle. She touched so many of our hearts. Even if you didn't know her personally, just listening to her songs or seeing her perform live made you feel like you knew her. Mia had a way of laying her emotions out there in front of everyone with her songwriting and delivery. There was a rawness and soul to her songs, something you can still hear listening to The Gits a good 15 years later. When she died it was so [...]
While it may not have seemed like it on the site, on a personal level, this week was particularly chaotic. On Monday afternoon, my pride and joy, aka my Mac Book, succumbed to a mechanical problem of some sort, requiring an extended stint at the good old Apple store. And of course, just my luck, the whole thing went down during a very busy week. Fortunately the rest of the staff did a tremendous job this week, proving again that there is no I in team. To celebrate, and help me forget that I still am without my [...]

Have you heard The Gits ? They were a really great Seattle band in the 90's, by way of my poor Antioch College. A documentary has just been released about them that I went and saw at the Clinton Street Theater tonight. Its all about the band, the grunge scene back in the day, and The Gits lead singer Mia Zapata , who was brutally murdered one night on her way home from a bar. Her death was unsolved for about 10 years and finally solved recently through DNA evidence. [...]
So, I went to see the Gits documentary -succinctly titled "The Gits" -at the Northwest Film Forum last night. And it was easily well worth it (especially since I had a free pass courtesy of KEXP). If you fancy yourself a "Seattle music fan", inwards and outwards, I implore you to take advantage of the screening currently happening, through July 14th, at the NWFF. Heck, if you're simply a music fan in general, you should go see it. Or, alternately, if you want to be touched by the tragic murder of [...]
