I choose my own TV poison, and one bad apple out of which I've yet to take a bite is ABC's Dancing with the Stars . Although I did watch a YouTube clip of Sade performing "Babyfather" on the DWTS stage two years ago (and how could I not?), I've never seen an episode of the reality-TV dance-off. It's not that I have anything against B-to-D-listers dancing for dollars, or ABC plugging its own shows by inviting "stars" that nobody really wants to see more of ( The View 's Sherri Shepherd, just announced [...]

"Not Over You" pop-rocker Gavin DeGraw isn't exactly known for his fancy footwork, but he'll be trying out his moves as part of the Season 14 cast of Dancing With The Stars , it was announced this morning. He'll be paired up with Karina Smirnoff in the latest installment of the series, which premieres on March 19 on ABC. Joining him will be Grammy-winning soul diva Gladys Knight (whose dancing partner will be Tristan MacManus), Welsh opera singer Katherine Jenkins and actors Jack Wagner and Melissa Gilbert, among others. See the full cast [...]

We reach a decade of Covered With Soul mixes with interpretations of songs better known in versions by the Mamas and the Papas, Rolling Stones, Randy Newman, The Righteous Brothers, Brook Benton, Ben E King (or Shirley Bassey), Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, The Shirelles, Frankie Laine, Frankie Valli, Jimmy Cliff, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Dylan, Chicken Shack (or the late Etta James), Kris Kristofferson, Gil Scott-Heron, Carpenters, Doobie Brothers, Bread and Abba. Even if you are a casual observer of soul music, you will know at least one voice here among the lesser known singers: Dorothy [...]
Ils se rebaptisent alors Gladys Knight & The Pips et éditent leur premier single à succès "Every Beat Of My Heart", chanson écrite [...]

I was going to post another mix today, but when one of your favourite songwriters dies, priorities take over. And much as I love Jerry Leiber's repository of great lyrics – he was he Cole Porter of rock & roll – my tribute is for Nickolas Ashford, who with his wife Valerie Simpson wrote, produced and recorded over their career of five decades some of the finest soul music. They deserve a lifetime achievement award alone for that string of wonderful songs they wrote and produced for Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell: Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, [...]

In this instalment we look at the lesser known originals for five hits from the 1970s. Regular readers with exceptionally good memories might have a déjà vu movement: two of the songs I've done before. But I was not satisfied with one, and recently was sent by a kind soul a crucial sound file for the other. * * * Johnny Bristol – Love Me For A Reason (1974).mp3 The Osmonds – Love Me For A Reason (1974).mp3 [...]

Another one from Paul Maxwell, this time he's sampled Gladys Knight and The Pips. Most all of his beats are available for download and I can't stress enough how ready I am for someone to go in on them. In due time, Maxwell, in due time.
The American Idol finale wasn't just all about performances last night. There were a few segments thrown in there two. They did a sort of roast video for the judges with Randy Jackson's showing how many times he said people are "in it to win it"; Steven Tyler's showing lots of clips of him saying crazy things, inappropriate things and curse words; and Jennifer Lopez's just showing how much everyone loves her. One of my two favorite segments came in the form of a video in which contestants talked about being eliminated, with James Durbin and Casey James arguing over [...]

Pretty cool free download courtesy of the Compost team. Prommer & Barck - Gladys Knight (Alex Barck Remix) is deep synth pulser that drives the track on underneath some pretty quirky vocals. The whole release is available on Derwin Records and is out on May 25th. And if you wait a bit longer there's a digital bonus in it for you: Dr. Jeckyll And Mr Hyde (Peter Kruder Remix - Alex Barck Edit) Prommer & Barck - Gladys Knight (Alex Barck Remix) by compost

The name Prommer & Barck doesn't quite roll off the tongue, yet the pairing of Christian Prommer and Alex Barck is a natural one. With the former being a veteran of several well respected production groups (Trüby Trio, Voom:Voom, Fauna Flash) and the latter a founding member of Jazzanova, their combined years of experience and similar aesthetics meant it was only a matter of time before they crossed paths in a studio. Following their single for Permanent Vacation in 2010, the duo created the album Alex And the Grizzly which scrambles up techno, jazz, house, funk and the [...]
Gaby Moreno defies categorization with a unique voice and stunning style.
Before he sas LOL-ing, he had soul!

The two soul Christmas mixes focussed on soul from the 1960s and '70s. This mix, the third for Christmas, covers mostly the era from the 1980s to the present (I think the Sweet Divines' version of Everyday Will Be Like A Holiday is the most recent recording on this mix). One song, I'll Be Home For Christmas, is represented twice here, but in two very different versions. The packed file includes a front and back cover, and the mix is timed, as always to fit on a standard CD-R (plus a bonus track, which wouldn't fit on the [...]

Here's an amazing soulful deep track that came into the mail box with barely any info at all?! Pure quality though... A remix of Hankat - Be The First ft. Gladys Night by Flip + Simioni Beautiful vocals over bubbly repetitive synths and snare taps... get it now! Hankat ft.
Norman Whitfield, one of Motown's best in-house composers and producers, has died. Whitfield's name graces every third page of my Motown's Greatest Piano Book. He wrote most of the Temptations' songs after 1968 including "I'm Losing You," "Ball of Confusion," "Just My Imagination" and one of my personal favorites, "Message from a Black Man" and will probably go down in history for penning "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Good coverage at pitchfork, here .

The third mix of Beatles covers, covering the period between the White Album (partly covered in the second mix) to the final album. The most significant song here is the Beach Boys' live recording of Back In The USSR, with Ringo Starr guesting. The song was, of course, Paul McCartney's satire of the Beach Boys. One imagines it was a find piss-take, because by 1968 the Beach Boys had long left the girs-cars-surf scene behine (well, except Mike Love, who never really got past it). Two songs here, by George Benson and by Booker T & the MGs, [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. One of the five best songs ever written in music history; everyone here is just straight pimpin' it. Basically, Gladys Knight was never better and the Pips, well, jesus they're rocking blue velvet suits with fuchsia ruffled shirts and dropping dance moves like they're sleeping. This. Right here. Is the epitome of cool (that and Steve McQueen in Bullit ).
