I've loved Glass Cake for years and because I've never known all that much about her, I always assumed she was a Berkeley college student that recorded beautiful lo-fi music in her bedroom. But then I got word of her Honey Months EP and was glad to learn this might just be more than a hobby. I noticed that one of the tracks was a cover of Diane Cluck's "Yr Million Sweetnesses". It felt like my girl band-crush worlds were colliding. Watch Glass Cake performing Yr Million Sweetnesses below.

Glass Cake - Window Glass Cake recently put out a lovely 4 track cassette tape, which is now also available as a digital download. You should go get one or the other or both, because Michelle writes songs that never fail to send a summer shiver down your spine. Besides a voice that is all shades of soulful, sexy and hip, she writes songs that are really catchy and cool (remember her ' Demonstrations ' ep?). If she doesn't become the next big indie darling of [...]

Rocket or Chiritori - Vacation (English Ver.) Rocket or Chiritori - Love Eyes In the late nineties, a seventeen year old girl named Satoko Shibahara made these songs. She crafted the album Love Eyes under the name Rocket or Chiritori before calling the music game quits and focusing on school. Love Eyes is audible evidence that you didn't mistake your favorite memories for dreams. It's an unspoken invitation to view someone's most personal form of expression. I found Love Eyes fourteen years [...]

J'aime la sincérité, la simplicité que Glass Cake utilise dans leur ballade pop pour se ruer dans des champs de pâquerettes et gambader. ET oui, on ressort les cœurs tout moelleux ! Glass Cake - Superior To The Sea

So I put together a little list, and I'm exhausted. Why did I do this to myself? I get caught up in these lists and a ton of artists come to mind, each of them so deserving of their own place immortalized in the archives of friends' but I could only give them a few lines each. Instead of putting together a year-end 'best of' list, not necessarily albums, not necessarily current artists- simply artists that I discovered this year, in 2010. These artists made an impact on me in some way, whether it was just one of [...]
I remember stumbling across Glass Cake sometime last year and just fell in love with her milky soft vocals, fuzzy harmonies, funny beatboxing and light guitar strumming. Thats why I was so excited to find out that she was on Flamgirlant's Summer Burn Mix - which you guys should all grab HERE . This Berkeley girl, Michelle Shofet , sings in a sad, but hopeful tone. Her adorable version of Madonna's Like A Prayer sounds like she's got a stuffed nose, which makes her even sweeter. All of her songs are [...]

So I never said I was first on the spot when music gets announced or promo'd but there are some pretty decent tunes that are new to me that I am spinning, so I thought I might need a Monday playlist. No real connection other than the fact that I am listening to each individually and not part of the album (except for maybe White Hinterland) or any sort of back catalog - all individual tracks to me over the last week or so from the ol inbox. "The Darkest Side" [...]

Glass Cake is Michelle Shofet, one of the many super rad musicians over at Berkeley in northern California. Her structures are simple on paper, but I dare any to challenge the way which these infectious harmonies built on top of melodies affect the ears of the heart. It's rare to hear someone sound so beautiful and diverse singing with, well...themselves, but holy shit does Michelle make every note more and more intimate. "Friend Forever" and "Truly" are just like...I'm not even going to get into it. I def sat in my room for a couple of days over summer [...]

There is a beautiful warmth in the low fidelity recordings of Berkeley, California's Glass Cake, also known as the multi-talented Michelle Shofet. The minimal constructions, blanketed by Shofet's simple yet engaging melodies, produce a charming, warm and engaging listening experience with just the right measures of heart, melancholy and artfulness. Glass Cake's 'Michelle Shofet's Album' is offered as a free download from the bands MySpace, however the link doesn't work due to myspace's archaic security filter, but you should be able to download it here . Michelle Shofet also plays in the equally lo-fi [...]

cred: mark weaver a colony of artists would hopefully develop a moral economy; sustained by one another. of course, foreign settlers hell bent on killing everyone must be taken into consideration. glass cake - friend forever

Il fallait que Mme Glasscake bulletine sur ce monsieur, pour que je tombe enfin sur un truc qui me met des paillettes dans les mirettes et des contractions dans les zygomatiques. Grimpez donc sur l'éléphant rose garé devant la porte, il vole parfois, mais sait atterrir en douceur, au milieu des feuilles cotonneuses d'une jungle de sucre. by kevin diamond Summer may or may not be here, depending on the day. I spent a 4th of July in the epic sunlight of a far away island, and it sure felt like summer. Today, gray clouds converge above a morose borough. Can we blame them? Summers contain endless joys and subtle pains: Freewheeling shards of sunshine, and crispy skin burnt by that sun's same rays. A week ago I saw a rainbow. Last night a full moon. Mother nature has many faces and she shows them [...]

glass cake - blanket Oh boy oh boy oh boy. Lean your weight on this one; it sounds frail and flighty but really it's as sturdy as anything. Well-constructed. Don't be fooled by the reedy microphone or the harsh peaking on the high notes; this might sound like the work of a second-class bedroom hobbyist but it'll stand up to the most thorough listen. glass cake is the work of Michelle Shofet, a resident of Berkeley, California, who does dreamy melancholia with such skill it drags you in and tows you along, unpredictable and [...]
