Glass Candy is a band that never gets enough blog love. Just kidding. Their music is easy enough to like, but good enough to last. Needless to say their newer demos live up to all hype. Producer Johnny Jewel's signature down tempo disco sound is at the forefront of both tracks... and along with Chromatics , they're forging the new disco sound: Glass Candy - "Geto Boys" (demo) (mp3) Glass Candy - "Candy Castle" (demo) (mp3) [...]

From no-wave rock beginnings to the italo disco sensation that they are today, Glass Candy never ceased to astonish with every release. I'm convinced that Johnny Jewel, the man behind the Glass Candy sound is a genius and Ida No, the woman behind that dreamy voice is an angel. The duo has been know to close out their live sets by singing one of their songs on top of the Geto Boys ' 'Mind Playing Tricks On Me' beat. Last month they unveiled a new demo track on their myspace titled [...]
A tasty little assortment today. ESG bring the old school spartan funk rarity. M.I.A. delivers a sweet Bollywood disco treat. Dr.Who Dat? delivers lush, blissful and summer-y jazz-hop. After Dark is a great compilation of new Italo stuff, including the Kraftwerk cover and the remix of the Indeep classic. ESG - Moody (A New Mood) M.I.A. - Jimmy Dr.Who Dat? - Braziliant Thought Glass Candy -

What do I know? I listen to Madonna. I don't listen to Karen O and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Never really liked Jenny Lewis solo stuff. Annie and Kylie Minogue are tight. Is there a woman in Animal Collective? She's probably really hot. Her name is IDA NO. Anyways, go to Glass Candy's Myspace for a bunch of free MP3s. Seems like every time I check (which is fairly often), Glass Candy has just uploaded something new for free download on their myspace page . They're not just generously prolific, however; they seem to be getting better with each new jam . On "Candy Castle," Ida No is on some slightly more '80s/ Cyndi Lauper shit (specifically the " C'mon C'mon, woo! " bit), as opposed to the duo's typical '70s roller-disco steez. The band has this song categorized as a "studio outtake," so hopefully this abundance of new [...]

glass candy's ida no We follow up Saturday night's new Chromatics song with another late-night jam: the equally dark and icy " Silver Fountain ," from Italians Do It Better label-mates Glass Candy . I'm convinced by now that Johnny Jewel is one of the best producers in this genre at the moment, and on this spaced-out track, he makes songstress Ida No 's vocals sound like a faint transmission from some distant galaxy. mp3: Glass Candy Silver Fountain

More grunt than an American muscle car. Just what I need before going for a game of squash. Teenage Bad Girl certainly do pack a punch, previously I have made the obvious Vitalic meets Jackson And His Computer Band comparisons..... but i'm sorry guys, you deserve better than that. Cocotte is an incomparable piece of modern French electro. You can have your Crosses. You can have your Attacks, Decays and Sustains.... right now this is what I want. [...]
Despite threatening to move my blog to Wordpress as Blogger wasn't working & I couldn't get anyone to tell me why, I discovered that due to how the site is set up it was going to be easier said than done. I spent ages importing all my stuff into the easy version of Wordpress (wordpress.com), only to discover from my web host that I wouldn't be able to use my domain name. Gah! I then started

Here's some music for yr face. ミドリ // ドーピング☆ノイズノ イズキッス I randomly picked this disc up in a used record store in Tokyo. It had a really cool cover. June ushers in summer, which is what this mix is all about. The first half of these songs are new bands trying to sound like old 70's R&B bands (think double-dutch and kids playing in the gushing water rom a fire hydrant) the second half is new bands trying to sound like 70's disco bands (think a modern version of music you would hear in your local skating rink/disco-teque). And together,to me anyways, it oozes summer. Something to help your Kool-Aid go down a bit smoother. Download [...]

Jersey City based imprint Italians Do It Better are primed to have a big year. Mike Simonetti , DJ and founder of Troubleman Unlimited started the new label which (as of now) focuses mainly on bands with an italo disco sound. I wanted to feature some tracks from the label's roster, from the vocoder heavy Italian duo of Mirage to the subdued horns of Glass Candy 's "Rolling Down The Hills" to Farah 's [...]
Okay, I'll admit, I was a little up in arms over Glass Candy's new musical direction at first. I mean, having seen them in one of their early incarnations, the new stuff seemed to pale in comparison. I thought to myself, where's the heat? Where was the passion? Where's Ida no's high pitched shrill that I loved so much. But now thanks to a few other bloggers I have seen the light and beauty of the new Glass Candy & am a card carrying fanatic. If you have not yet heard the [...]

There wasn't a mix for April since we have been doing the "On Rotation" segment every week. But I decided to put one together for April/May and call it the spring edition. It has a mix of rock, dance, retro, etc. I am pretty happy with it. Fresh stuff for the coming warm days outside. Also, the QP crew will be heading across the country to enjoy Coachella next week (yes, all those annoying coachella posts will be over soon...we promise). I am sure we will all be destroyed when we [...]
Yes, I know the label is pro-Italiano, but I swear to you that is not the reason I like the music. ;o) Especially since she is from Jersey...just kidding. Really. Just kidding, I know great people in Jersey. Anyway, you can check out their demos on their MySpace page. I'm a little bit confused about their label. They seem to be paired with Glass Candy a lot and that is because they are both on the Italians Do It Better record label. So if you like sultry female vocals, [...]

Glass Candy If you've been reading the blog for a while, you know we've been way into Glass Candy 's newer stuff, and their brand new myspace demo might just be our favorite yet. We said before that the Portland duo's latest tracks sound like authentic old-school roller-skating disco jams, and "Rolling Down the Hills" definitely fits that bill, while still managing to sound futuristic at the same time. I can't stress enough how great Johnny Jewel 's production is these days; just listen to that muted horn section. And [...]

I can't think of a more appropriately named song. Within the first five notes I can instantly visualize some flaxen-haired, polyester-clad girl rolling down a grassy hill with the sun illuminating every blade on the way down. I love how Glass Candy draws from the music of 70's movies/TV shows that you told everyone made you cringe, but was your secret guilty pleasure. The trumpets and synths backing up Idano's breathy vocals totally transport me into one of those video sequences where i'm spinning around and around with Trip Fontaine (Virgin Suicides, people) and the camera keeps cutting back and forth between my smile [...]

We've posted on Portland 's Glass Candy before, and while we find their material to be a little hit-or-miss, it's probably because we're total amateurs when it comes to the weird hybrid genre of electro/glam/italo-disco/whate ver. With that said, we're pretty much astounded by the production on their new song, this Belle Epoque cover, which does an incredible job of re-creating some vintage disco roller-skating jam in the vein of Chromatics ' " In the City ," only slightly darker and almost certainly coke-fueled. See, told you we were amateurs. Recommended for fans [...]
