When I first listened to "The Same", I immediately thought "if Woods made charming, funky pop music, these two bands would be the same." But after a couple of listens, I drew upon the conclusion that the similarities that connected the two bands were few and far between. Sure, Glass Ghost singer Eliot Krimsky sings in a falsetto some of the time, but everything else about their sound is completely different, and completely original. Their sound isn't different from just Woods, but from most music out there today. "The Same" has this feeling to it... It has this relaxed, chilled [...]

Glass Ghost are the New York duo of Eliot Krimsky and Mike Johnson. Their debut album, Idol Omen,is coming out on Western Vinyl October 27th. A myriad of influences collide on this very fine record; funk, Brazilian, hip-hop, and even some rock. It glows with warmth and a strange yet alluring uniqueness. Lead singer Eliot will remind you a little of D Byrne in the falsetto range but mostly it brings to mind Arto Lindsay's Ambitious Lovers with a little Geggy Tah [...]

Thanks so much to everyone who came out, especially the fabulous bands who played, and to Trophy Bar for hosting the whole madness. I know everyone I invited to play were some of my favorites, so of course I was thrilled more than anybody else to see them all at one place, but I was extra excited because they all played incredibly strong sets. A ton of pictures are posted here with helpful captions, and we filmed pretty much the whole thing, so video will come soon too! All pics were taken by me (Sarahana), except where noted. [...]

I should probably be out at the Northside Festival right now brining you more coverage of the weekend's festivities. I am, however, a little too festivitied out. Nevertheless, I saw some great music this weekend at Brooklyn's mini music fest. Here's a brief recap. Friday night brought me to Studio B for the first time, a very cool venue nestled on an out-of-the-way street in Williamsburg. The first band I caught was an extremely cool, extremely different three piece called Elfin Saddle . Their music is definitely inspired by Asian scales and instruments, and the amount of [...]

We'd love for you to come and be part of this fantastic madness. It's for FREE, and it's during the day on a Saturday, and we'll be selling top notch spring sandwiches in the backyard. A lot of the performances will be unamplified, which is always twice as fun. It's too bad that I'm organizing this show because ideally I would've liked to just sit and watch this whole thing myself. Get a taste of who's playing: Hooves on the Turf's Northside Festival showcase at Trophy Bar, 351 Broadway [...]

Have you witnessed the furor over L Magazine's " 8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear " list as witnessed on Brooklyn Vegan? Spare yourself, I guess! With much love to all the bands who made it, especially The Beets, here's my own the list. My exciting 8, with much less consideration to obscurity, but all these bands are still in a position where they could gladly use more hype/love/praises. Sharon Van Etten Sharon Van Etten (pictured) is one bold woman. She wraps all [...]

Monday: Maps and Atlases + Pattern Is Movement @ Mercury Lounge 7pm $10 A pairing this sweet normally doesn't happen on a Monday, but today it is and it kicks off a pretty great week of live music here in New York as bands pass through on their way to Austin. Both bands have received a shit ton of press so you should know all about them and their music, and their live shows only go to back all that press up. Maps and Atlases - "Witch" Pattern Is Movement - [...]
This week Deli Magazine concluded the voting for their best NY band of 2008 with Vivian Girls, Chairlift, and Secret Life of Sofia coming in in the top spots proving once again that the bands coming out of New York are top notch artists that are making an impact in this music world. It was nice to see the list of bands that were nominated (full disclosure: I was one of the jurors to pick these bands my choices; Secret Life of Sofia, Brownwater, & Brilliant Sweaters) ranging from the absolutely obscure bands from Staten Island (see: Brownwater) [...]

Is there even any doubt that Brooklyn circa 2009 fosters one of the most vibrant music scenes on this here planet? Not really; at this point, Brooklyn as music epicenter is a given, and it really has been long since next-door spoiled brother Manhattan's ever-skyrocketing rents have forced 99% of musicians across the East River and elsewhere. It's like that cool time-lapse photography used to capture vegetation growing, except the flowers and weeds are bands, artists, and ideas exploding from a single concrete slab. And while those of us who live here may [...]

Photos : Tim Griffin On Saturday, December 13 , there was a "secret" loft party in Williamsburg featuring Inlets , Fred Niclaus of Department of Eagles , Glass Ghost and Angel Deradoorian of Dirty Projectors . Tim Griffin was there to capture the action and from the looks of it, when people weren't incessantly checking their text messages, they seemed to be having a pretty good time. Also spotted that evening, the rare North American Hipster . Fred [...]
(photo by Kristianna Smith) Inlets , the folky group led by Sebastian Krueger (of My Brightest Diamond) will be joined by Fred Nicolaus of Department of Eagles doing a solo set, Glass Ghost , and Angel Deragoorian (Dirty Projectors), who'll also be playing solo. There are supposedly special guests who'll join the party and for 5 bucks, it seems like a totally good idea. Maybe we'll see you there. Cryptic shows are going to be in 2009, yeah? We think so. The show, which is [...]
Monday: Glass Ghost @ Glasslands 9pm $6 Following a nice, long holiday weekend I'm sure a lot of you will be looking to get back into the show going right away on Monday night. Unfortunately there isn't too much going on, but there is this show at Glasslands. Glass Ghost is a new side project from Eliot Krimsky of the awesome band Flying. I've only checked out their Myspace so far but based on that and the reputation of Flying I'd have to say that they're definitely worth taking a chance on. [...]
