"We have all the time in the world, to get it right..." The Frames... what to say. In a long, slow, dramatic history between myself and this band, our relationship has blossomed into something that is well beyond the standard. The feeling and emotion that is conveyed through their music is so overpowering and universal. It envelopes the listener, delivering a beautiful product that transcends and transforms. I don't like to be without them. So today, I offer up a show from Dublin, their hometown. While [...]

As can be seen in the image Mark Geary is on an Irish tour at the moment in support of the third album called Opium which was released nearly a year ago. Mark is from Ireland but has settled in NYC since his Sin É days with the likes of Jeff Buckley and Katell Keineg. His three albums are amazng lovely albums full of great stories and beautiful melodies. You need to check Mark Geary live this month! www.markgeary.com http://www.myspace.com/markgea ry From the first [...]
Mark Dignam & Very Special Guests Whelans 8th Feb 2009 Mark Dignam's friends Glen Hansard of The Swell Season and Liam O'Maonlai from The Hothouse Flowers were the special guests for Mark's first headline gig at home in about 6 years. Glen arrived on stage, checked the guitar amp which wasn't working, then sat at the front on the stage about 4 feet from me and sang completely acoustically. It was amazing to be so near to such a talent and Oscar winner! The short set included Leave, Plateau, Finally, Revelate and Raglan Road. The atmosphere was so [...]
Thanks again to Peter from 2UIBestow for the setlist. Glen came onstage before the main star, Mark Dignam, but had some technical difficulties with the guitar so sat on the stage and acoustically sang the following without a mic: Leave, Plaeau, Ghost, Finally, Back Broke, Revelate Raglan Road. Peter said the gig was lovely, and was like the Whelan's of old.
Any regular reader of this blog would see I'm a massive fan of all things Glen and Mark Dignam. I knew that The Swell Season charity gig would be special, but it was so much much more important for those in attendance. It almost felt like a mini cultural uprising. Not a revolution but the seeds of a badly needed cultural revolution in these parts. Not only are Glen and Mark planting seeds but we have Sean [Dr.] Millar playing gigs and planning releases, the Ruby Sessions back in full swing and with the recent gigs by Terry Sutton the [...]

As a lover of Irish Music I still think Hot Press do a great job with their magazine every two weeks. However, I was a tad annoyed at the current failure to feature any news of Mark Dignam's homecoming gigs as guests to The Swell Season next Thursday and as headliner in Whelans on the 8th Feb with very special guests. Now I know I'm at risk of flooding the blog with Marky news so I do apologise but I wanna focus on who those special guests might be! Remember we are talking about Very Special Guests! [...]
Muzu.tv is another fine example of the Irish adding to the Global musical landscape. Muzu.tv is a music video site similar to YouTube with a massive difference. The bands get paid for having their video viewed. This difference will see Muzu.tv becoming a massive part of the future for the record labels and bands. You should be able to view these clips no matter where in the world you are! http://www.muzu.tv/ The Coronas - Decision Time THE CORONAS - The Coronas - Decision Time [...]
Filed under: News , Movies Spinner.com : Musical sweethearts Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova have ended their romantic relationship. In 2007's indie fairytale film 'Once,' the pair charmed audiences with their portrayal of an Irish busker (Hansard) who falls for a young Czech immigrant... Read more

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova: Falling Slowly [ purchase ] I received the DVD of the movie Once as a Christmas gift last year from a dear friend, who knew I had tried to see it in the theatres when it came out but never could manage the time - the recommendations came to me from too many directions to ignore... My daughter and I watched it together soon afterwards (my second viewing, her first) and there is a scene in which the male character begins [...]
A while ago - a fair while ago, as it happens - Ireland's greatest non-female export covered a couple of rather okay modern pop songs, thus making them rather marvellous. Everyone knows the rumoured story - Cry Me A River is about Britney, Everytime is her (superior) reply. But screw that. The best thing about these tracks is the smarmy violin at the end of the Britney cover. Name that tune, so

So, here's a pretty damn nifty album that required a bit of licensing, organization, compiling and permission (perhaps)begging. Before The Goldrush is a compilation album paying homage to mentors, teachers, and singer-songwriter artists of the 60s, 70s who influenced the music of today. Supposedly, an open call was made to all current singer-songwriters in an effort to cover some damn beautiful songs for the compilation. All the profits from the digital-only full album download from Amazon are going to Teach For America and is also tax deductible, if [...]
So here at Vinyl Visions we've been slacking. With the Thanksgiving break, no one has had the time to sit down and type out a review, and for that we take full responsibility. For that reason, we've decided to throw up a few mp3s. This playlist is meant for the late fall/early winter transition, hope you like it. Vinyl Visions' Winter Transition 64:26 [87.09 MB] 1. I've got a confession: I think Justin Timberlake has talent. Lots of it. That isn't to say I actually listen to him very much, but he seems to be able to make popular culture work for him, rather than just being swept along like so many other hitmakers. The guy's got charisma to spare, and with the inevitable Dick in a Box spin-off season coming up soon, why not celebrate his many hits? Everybody loves a good movie, especially when the film is about music, making music or being in a band. This just makes the whole viewing experience all the more exciting. Though some of these band flicks tend to trivialize the creative process, or even the entire industry, some of them actually end up being pretty mediocre to okay. What's more is that sometimes the songs that these fictional characters write up are also half decent. Keep in mind, however, that the songs do not actually exist. Since fictional characters write them, they are simply figments of the imagination [...]

Heather Browne posted this on Monday, and I've been meaning to repost it all week- but just haven't gotten around to it until now. She's dug up a great interview with Glen Hansard (The Swell Season) on his experiences with a young and still undiscovered Jeff Buckley while on the Commitments promo tour. Go to I Am Fuel, You Are Friends to steam the audio interview. It's worth it.

Copied from sister site Mixtape4melfi : "Terry Sutton was a revalation this week in Ruby Sessions. How has he not become successful? His voice is strong, songwriting is amazing, and his image is excellent. If your a fan of Damian Rice, Glen Hansard, Paddy Casey watch out for a Terry Sutton album in the near future!" Terry is performing with Padraig Digan in the Stags Head on 7th December. Entry is just a fiver! Terry kindly allowed me to host a sample mp3 called The Laughter. I can [...]

Today, November 17th, is Jeff Buckley 's birthday, and a reader sent me this interview clip with Glen Hansard ( Once , The Frames, The Commitments ) discussing the months when his guitar tech/roadie was this young guy named Jeff. Listen to Hansard tell the story of Jeff first playing "an Irish club in the East Village " with him (of course, the famous Sin-é ) and the reaction of the audience when this unknown kid started to sing. As he discusses their relationship in [...]
