The Grammys were on last night, and even though I watched them, I felt just as disconnected from the alleged art contained within them as ever. I went to the Grammys in 2003 in NYC and at the time was struck by what a spectacle, what a circus it was. It was barely about the music, more about the fashion, the pyrotechnics, the manufactured emotion of the mini-crowd they select to run down to the front, wild in their staged arm-waving enthusiasm -- trying to inject an emotion into the show that doesn't exist in the natural state. [...]

Hope no one minds an early "Sunday" post this week; my brother and his wife are on their way in from Brooklyn for the long weekend, and I don't get to see them as often as I'd like. I'll have a short post up for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, if I can; in the meantime, enjoy today's feature on "American Primitive" folkartist Gillian Welch and her partner David Rawlings, the tenth post in our popular Covered in Folk series, where we pay tribute to the songwriting talents of a single artist. I was reminded at Toad the Wet Sprocket's performance last Wednesday (opening act for Guster ) of my idea for a Time Travel post on great old songs you might hear on the sound system at the grocery store, a restaurant, or the auto parts shop. The idea is, these songs, no matter how often you hear them or how mundane the environment, retain their original power to make you feel the same zing you felt when they were new. Toad the Wet Sprocket is blessed, or cursed, depending on how you look at [...]

Hello everyone, Huge apologies for the prolonged absence. Life at the Northern HQ of Lonesome has been somewhat all-encompassing of late and I've had technical (read: Blogger) issues. So, nearly... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit MyWebsite.com for full links, other content, and more! ]]

As Wednesday creeps into the edges of your consciousness, it's my pleasure to again pair with two of Philly's finest -- Bruce from Some Velvet Blog & Duke from The Late Greats -- for a tag team Valentine's Day bacchanalia. There are millions and trillions of love songs out there, ranging from the sublime to the silly, from the nostalgic to the nasty. We each arbitrarily picked out ten that we liked for this holiday of cupids and red roses, and we're putting it up 2 [...]

I was a follower of Toad the Wet Sprocket in the 1990s and was upset when they decided to go thier separate ways a few years ago. Leadman Glen Phillips has continued to make excellent pop music though. His newest effort, Mr. Lemons will be hitting record store shelves in May. Here is a taste of what Glen has fired up for his third solo release. Links for his myspace page and tour dates below..... Glen on MySpace Glen's upcoming tour [...]
